How is a 30% FPS boost with extra effects not even close to good useful utilisation?
I can understand if you don’t like it due to lack of game support or the games it supports you don’t like. But to say it has no good useful utilisation for anyone is just plain wrong. What about the CAD developers who use it? What about those of us who like the games it works well in? Not worth anyone pennies? Its really cheap now, not that I can post any price’s as it’s against the rules.

Can't you guys just agree to disagree about the merits, or lack thereof, of the PPU?

It's like owning a sports car in London: Generally worthless, but when you find that very short stretch of open road and gun it, it's immensely satisfying.

Yeah but some of us are way too stingy to be able to justify buying for that reason. :p Hell, I don't even have a car. Or a driving license for that matter. Says it all I think! :D

They didn’t say which drivers they used? If they didn’t install the newest drivers that explains the score. Also they didn’t post what score they get without the PPU. If the PPU is faster then the CPU then its not as bad as it looks.

Installing UT PPU maps now going see what I get and edit it into this post.

EDIT:How do you turn on the FPS counter? The PPU map did feel slower but on max settings it was playable. I don’t see how they got 4 to 6 fps on minimum settings unless I am really misjudging the FPS.

Speaking to other PPU owners they all get in the 30’s FPS on the PPU maps. I think the review site did something stupid like not turn on the PPU. Or turned it on but didnt restart the game.

O i know full well that lots of people dont have 22 or 24s. But out of the gaming friends i know the majoirty is around the 22".

The point is though that still claiming that sli does not benift people running at 1024 is pointless.

Also as pointed out above the survay claims most people have 256mb of ram. Clearly they arn't very indicative on gamers. Further more any gamer would have at least 1gb of ram i would imagine andl ikely to have 2gb if they bought more recently (i currently have 1gb but will have 4gb soon). I dont think the steam survays are very accurate and therefore would not use that to justify a point.

If moer games supported it i would buy it for a fps boost. But really id want to see more then 30%, perhaps 50% and that would be a very nice boost. But if they managed to actually make use of physics then i would defintly buy one even if it took way fps. You see you say they use liquire, body and cloth physics. But i personally havn't seen any of these in effect and i dont think they would be too good anyway considering the price. Of corse its just speculation as i dont have a ppu to try. If they were worth it i think more people would have them though. As far as im aware in graw it just makes the explosion look a bit more pretty.

What games out there are worth the exclusive purchase... no actually what collection of games out there are worth the spending money even on the reduced price PhysX card? What game provides meaningful utilisation of the PhysX card that would honestly justify the purchase of the PhysX card?

I don't dissagree that it's clever and the Ageia API is great but from a GAMING perspective it is a dead end. Sure I can see where it would be useful in CAD and more so in apps like Maya and 3ds Max which I use quite a bit. The PhysX plugin is used quite a bit. But the gaming aspect just needs to die a quiet death in the corner.

For the record I did say *games* as opposed to a total sweeping statement.

For me it was the Bos collection. If you’re a COH addict it could be worth it for that. The new PPU price costs less then the price of 2 games. I think at that price it’s worth it at least for some people.

But does it change the gameplay? Does it take the game beyond what it was in terms of playability before PhysX was enabled or is it just eye candy. In my opinion it just doesn't.

Seems like your asking questions you know the answer to to argue.

Currently the physx cards are only for the eye candy as far as i know. I dont think its worth it personally as im not bothered in paying 100 quid for a prettier explosion in graw. But there is no need to start asking him questions you know the answer too just to attack him.

Doesn’t change gameplay!! Did you even play it? PhysX enhancer’s the weaponry which in turn change’s gameplay. You can earn extra money by killing with PhysX. Liquid from grenades can fall on beams, drip down and kill people. Liquids flow down surfaces and burn who ever touch it.Plant life interacts with gunfire, tress can be shot down, most of the physics effects you see in Crisis are already in BOS, wind from explosions and shells blows tress.

High pressure canisters get holes in them and fly around then explore spraying liquid all over. The enhanced explosion effects kill people. Solid cloth turns into shootable cloth and acts like cloth. Instead of the truck being 100% solid you can now shoot though the cloth and kill the bad buys hiding behind. That’s a change in gameplay.

Go to http://www.ageia.com/physx/videos.html and the very top move press the HD movie or just click on the centre pic for the low res movie. You can see many of the effects I talk about including shooting though cloth on a truck to hit what’s behind.

Another good comparison at least the first half is. There are side by side videos of the grenades. No side by side comparisons in the 2nd half of the vid.

Nope it’s used for gameplay.

100 quid try half that with the new price and its not just prettier explosions in GRAW. At least not in GRAW 2.
 
What does bos stand for? Id like to check this game out. However if crysis is doing it on a cpu currently perhaps physx really arn;'t needed at all. The reason it is not very well optimized currently is because it is a brand new engine. It will improve with time, most engines have been around years now.
 
Just watched the youtube one. waitin for the ageia one to load. The you tube one did show better gameplay but it seems dated and i think now days that would be able to be done on the cpu as the game graphics them selves seemed pritty naff and i wasn't to impressed with the extra physx as the fire seemed to act like liquid also which doesn't seem right. But im guesing this was some time ago so can be excused.

Looking down the list of games on ageia i dont recognize a single one. ive heard of cellfactor but never played it. And i found out what BOS means btw.

just finnished watching 3 of the agiea videos. To be honest, im not very impressed,. The liquid effects dont look right at all. And the more destructible things just flake into polygons and arn't very impressive at all. the games are to old possibly to show what physics card do. But with games such as crysis showing amazing physics. It just convinces me further that we dont need Phyx cards.
