mice everywhere in house

I've seen cats bring things in and play with them, but never wait till you try to getbthem and then give you a haha look. Frankly, your cat sounds awesome :)

does the fact that i have a plague of mice mean that i haven't been giving enough attention to cleaning and hygiene in the house? does having a dog cause more mice? if my mother-in-law decides to pay me a visit, it might persuade the mice to jump into the mouse traps and committ suicide.......(les dawson joke)!

Mice just look for shelter, food and water so it doesn't really matter if your house is clean or not. Saying that, you're more likely to get an infestation if you have trash laying about because it provides plenty of easily accessible food for them. Or maybe there's a few dead bodies under the floorboards... :p

There must be a crack, crevice or hole which they've used to access your house and cause an infestation so you should probably look around for the point(s) of entrance and block it off so no more mice come to sponge off you! Exterminators will probably look for the point of entrance anyhow and seems to be your only option if there are so many mice in your house.

You say your using rat traps, I assume you really mean mouse trap?! The size differential makes catching one with the others traps difficult.

We had a mouse issue a few months back, we bought some old style mouse traps, baited the traps with toffee and fudge and killed 3 mice in 2 nights.

Never had any back since.

In the past we've found Jack Russell dogs better ratters/mousers than the cat

Stick an advert in the paper. "Pet mice, free to a good owner, must catch your own"
Our cats never caught the mice we had around the house, but then they are getting old. Turns out our mice were using the gap under the house to travel between lots of the houses in our road even though we're semi! In the end the peanut butter did them in. Suckers.

Get a cat, and make sure the poison is cleared up so you don't end poisoning the cat. ;)

You mentioned a few times that the mice keep going behind units in the kitchen. It sounds to me these units need investigating.
