Microsoft Flight Simulator X

I've not started playing FSX properly yet, but I notice heaps of controls, I'm not trying to sound surprised as it is a Flight Simulator, but it seems really hard to control the plains and all the controls lol.

Same here, i got the Demo last night, i can take off and fly in a straight line ok but when it comes to turns and landing i just crash and burn. I need a joystick tbh

@ Buckster

I've just bought the Level-D 767 (well bought it yesterday). I've not had a chance to fully explore it yet, but it is a practically whole new sim in itself. It seems everything can be tweaked and configured, and it has what appears to be a fully programmable FMC (now I need to learn how to use the thing).

With regard to airports, check out Gary Summons' UK2000 range. Although he only has a few of the "extreme" range out, they really are very good and have been designed to fit in with Horizon's photo-scenery. He also has plans to release a VFR airfields package for the smaller airfields.

Try using 'mouse yoke' mode...select a flight - right click on the view and select 'mouse yoke' at the bottom. You can use the mouse wheel to control engine speed and press and hold the space bar to look around - you'll have to use keys for other functions rather than clicking on the cockpit controls, but it does make flying a breeze.

Oh and hows this for an addon!! available for a laugh from avsim.com

The UK2000 airports are great and you can try the four extreme airports in demo mode [places a box on the runway - which you can fly through] and then buy them for £12. The detail is stunning though there a little heavy on frames.

NotoriousLee,

I've got the Horizons series 1 - 3, and Active Sky + XGraphics and they all run fine together.

Also I've got Traffic 2005(FSX) so as to get a better representation of traffic at airports and in the air.

For buying add ons I tend to use justflight.com,
bought the horizons stuff straight from their site and bought the active sky stuff from their site and downloaded it.

There are so many add ons available it's a mine field so you've chosen the right forum to ask some questions before you get up and running.

Also make sure you patch FSX to SP1 to get the benefits of a performance increase for you core 2 duo

vfr graphics setting

i have been messing around with the settings to get the best effect.does it change much altering the global texture, anti aliasing, and the terrain settings.and also the scenery objects.just a matter of interest what do u have your settings at just to make sure i have everything set right.I know pcs are different with specs etc.its running ok but i want it running the best as i can. cheers.

With GenX I use:

Global and Aircraft textures Max
Weather Med
Traffic Med
LOD Radius Large
Mesh complexity 100
Mesh resolution 5m
Testure Resolution 1m
Water Max
Scenery complexity V. dense
Autogen dence
Special effects Med
Frame rate locked at 30

1280x1024 AA4x AF8x ..so quite high really.

Outside of uk with default ms scenery I have to knock things back quite a bit however.

ok i found it,i can set it in the nvidia control panel. i have changed my settings to allmost like yours.it seems to be a lot better now and the planes look more sharper.thanks for the info..

Went out and bought this today :D

Course the 1st thing i did when i got back, was to take a jet out and fly it upside down :p

fsx2007080618510212bh8.jpg

Running it "maxed out" in the ingame settings and getting a nice average of 30fps which seems great..

Anybody know a place i can get some plane skins, and terrain textures ( for free ;) ) ?

I can hear the passangers from here! :D

As for downloads and information, AVSIM is the defacto but you can Google for a million more. Textures are everywhere.

i installed it yesterday, thought the same thing, it looks the same!

didnt realise til very late you actually had to apply the textures you choose to the game!

on options screen, second tab (sorry im at work cant remember the name of tab)

but basically theres a button that says apply theme or something

hope that helps

oh ok, i just applied it in x graphics

then started fsx, sky was much whiter, etc etc etc looked a lot different, i wasnt using activesky that time though dont think that would make difference?

hmm not sure why u cant see difference

but at least you're not a noob like me :P
