Microsoft Flight Simulator X

I am thinking of getting FSX for my new I7 rig.

I loved FS2004 and the modding, but been away from it for a couple of years and not exactly sure of what's available with free mods and payware. The game is very cheap as well.

1)I am thinking of using the
Saitek X52 Flight Controller And Throttle Joystick, is this any good for this game.

2) Any good aircraft models for this game that's freeware such as the A380, 777 and various civil aircraft. Never been fan of the aircraft that comes with the Flight Sim games.

For Project Opensky aircraft look good. However, I loved the PDMG? 747 with the wing flex and other graphical features.

Would prefer freeware.

3) Textures such as land, runway or water. Are there quality freeware enhancements.

4) Is it worth buying the global terrain addon so that all the mountains etc look good?

5) Any other recommended addons?

The best website for FSX add ons that I have found is simviation.com because they have a very wide variety of add ons, if you want to find something for FSX, about 90% of the time, it will be on there.

As for A380's and other civil aircraft, you can find them on simviation.com, however if you want British airways liveries, you can find some freeware, but payware quality, planes on http://www.bvair.com/fleet.asp

You can also find a lot of really good scenery at simviation.com.

I hope this helps, I'm sorry your question didn't get answered sooner.

New FSX Gaming Rig

I figured that this was the best place to ask this.

I am building a budget gaming PC to run FSX on. The hardware I am going to use is an AMD X4 955 3.20GHz CPU, 4gb RAM and a Radeon HD 4850 GPU.

My first question is, will this hardware run FSX well, with good FPS and image quality.

My second question is, which GPU would be better for FSX, a HD 4850 or 9800GT?

My third question, is anyone running FSX on a system similar to this?

Thanks in advance :D

For FSX you will want as much CPU power as possible - it is slightly less critical that you have a good GPU but it certainly helps.

I'm running it on an i5@4GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI 5850. There are a number of performance tweaks out now which are essential to getting much increased performance. I'd probably suggest adding a 5850 to your spec and making sure you can get a good overclock with that CPU.

My spec runs FSX nicely with a constant 30FPS using an external FPS Limiter but if I take it off it will easily get 60FPS depending on surroundings.

Look on the avsim library for 'shader model fix' and you will find the best downloadable tweak ever.

I searched for that but couldn't find it:confused:

The CPU should be OK, it seems easy enough to overclock to about 4.0GHz

If you can get 4GHz you should be grand with the shader model fixes. Do a search for NickN FSX setup guide and you will find a very useful guide for optimising FSX. It really is a beast to run and even with a very good setup you won't necessarily get all sliders maxed!

FSX is on its way, as are some shiny new PC components!!

Anyone have any recommended Add-ons that I should go for? Also, doesn't look like PMDG have released the 737 just yet, any other decent 737 add-ons.
RealAir "Duke", and Pilatus PC 12, by Flight 1, for light aircraft.
Hong Kong, Kai Tak Airport & city scenery by Aerosoft.

I can very highly recommend the 737 Pilot in command add on. The planes look amazing on the inside and out, and it is just spectacular, my favourite add on so far!

You can find it here: http://www.justflight.com/product.asp?pid=116

And a couple videos of the planes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1YqqmNO2ak and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f504ZrO92o0

Taff question for you

Heathrow X or VFR Airfields (south) VOL 1??

since they are roughly the same price, how good is the heathrow airport?

This is pretty cool: http://www.liveatc.net/

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this post, I missed the question you asked me.

Personally I would go for Heathrow X, but it needs a huge amount of processing power to run it at it's best and it's only one airport.

I've not tried the VFR Airports South, but from the images I've seen most of the airports looked basic, but on the other hand it does give you lots of airports rather than the one.

The answer to you question really is what are you planning to do in terms of flying. If you want to take a small plane and fly round the south of ENgland then the VFR product is probably best for you, if you want to fly out of one airport but get a really good experience, then get the Heathrow X airport, but that's all it is.How long are you going to spend wandering the taxi ways at Heathrow?

Sorry, but I don't think I've answered your question.

Here is a shot of the new PMDG 737NGX - a view ripped from the VC panel!

Looks stunning!

That will be the addon worth having - was a big fan of the previous gen PMDG 737NG. Can't wait for this to come out.

Just bought a TrackIR last week and now FSX is just so addictive!

was just looking at that TrackIR .is it any good? also do u need a big monitor or 3 screens to make it work properly.i have a 24inch monitor ,how would it work on that.So u move your head and it moves the screen in virtual cockpit.

Track IR is good, do a you tube search and you can see some good examples of it in action.

Here's one of the best though not FSX

Here's an FSX example

You don't need 3 screen, or a huge screen it will work well on a 24incher.

Dependent on what version you get, you will be able to twist you head left and right, up down, forward and back or from side to side and the screen will move accordingly. There is a nack needed though as when you move your head, you still need to look at the screen so that takes some getting used to.
