Microsoft Flight Simulator X

That is somewhat of a vague and general statement, perhaps you have not managed to get it to work for your specific PC but I use an ATI 4870x2 and I am very happy with the results, ATI works perfectly well with FSX. The main difference between ATI & Nvidia when it comes to FSX is that ATI cannot handle cloud volume very well in FSX due to the way it is coded whereas Nvidia has a much better way to handle cloud volume. On the flip side, ATI has slightly better mip mapping especially at higher resolution in FSX, so it can end up looking slightly better at very high res. All in all, if I would choose a GFX card specifically for FSX then I would recommend Nvidia esp the slightly older range, like 8800 gts, Ultra, 9800 best is any single core card with memory >512mb. For many people, this range seems to give the best overall result for FSX flying.

Here are some shots of FSX with REX & CLS DC-10, this model/plane compares very closely to PMDG MD11, only the flight model is not as accurate, but then again, at least you can it to fly within your lifetime :).

Cheers

lovely pics there what addons you running to get 12 planes waiting to taxi ? Doesn't it slow your framerate right down.

i'm running a 4870 512 (wish i'd waited for the GIG :( ).

I have GEX and UTX and I'm waiting for FTX northwest USA to come out. Have you checked out their tasmania freebie it simply takes FSX to another level.

http://fullterrain.com/product_nablue.html the scenery in these pics is definitely possible I even get great scenery with my old 4870. Try the tasmania it comes with a free airport the difference between default airport and the addon is huge. But it's not only that even when you take off the scenery is beautiful.

LOL just saw your other pics I'm sure your are fully aware of FTX and oz. :D

Lovely pics can't wait to see your photobucket album (can't see it at work don't have flash 10 :( )

Agreed. I just can't see them canning the flight sim completely. I can't help but feel that some heads did need to roll after FSX was released though. Multi-core support should have been there from the start. I'm not sure what system they were testing it on when they plucked the system requirements out of the air but it was well beyond a joke.

I am only now able to play it with a decent frame rate and that's a couple of years since buying the thing. I am all for the sim pushing the limits of what can be done, and especially for longevity, although it could have been coded to make use of multi core systems so much better. It's not like they weren't around at the time or knew that they weren't becoming more common.

They should actually write it to use more of the GPU and it's memory. Although with intel's new i range and ddr3 that's probably not required now.

I managed to get the VFR england and wales set for christmas and have to say it's a brilliant add on for FSX. (Couple of screens below). Although it does away with autogen in the first instance, this is only a minor issue as performance is excellent and it looks fantastic. Will be looking to upgrade to REX 2.0 soon and then perhaps look at purchasing something from PMDG.

I have the FTX demo for Tazmania and think this is an excellent freeware package. FTX also offer a variety free and very high quality airports as well as a cool 'first-person' tool that allows you to walk around the scenery and airports. I am very much looking forward to FTX's forthcoming release of the Pacific north-west.

Nice. Some of these screenshots are tempting to treat myself to FSX. I currently use FS2K4. Over the years, I've collected quite a few nice add-ons, PMDG 737/747 (both of which are fantastic) scenery from FlyTampa, and a few others.

Does anyone know if these add-ons will work within FSX, or will I need to purchase versions specific for FSX?

I'm also now the proud owner of a 24" screen, so I'm assuming FSX will allow me to take advantage of the better resolution?

Sure, just started using MSN, just let me know how to contact you and will go from there.

Hi Soya!

Can you setup your trust account? I think you have enough posts.
That way I can send you an email via the trust system, without posting my email addy here (or you doing the same).

Is that ok bud? Would HIGHLY appreciate your help on setting up my FSX to look even remotely as good as how you have set it up.

And for the record, if anyone rubishes your screenies tell them to take a long walk off a short pier. Your screenies are genuinely a pleasure to view and are borderline pronographic :p

EDIT Ah dammit, you have 127 posts. Not enough to setup trust I think.

Is there any other way I wonder to send you my emai... hmm can anyone offer any assistance? Cheers :)

Why not? - FSX is designed to take advantage of multiple cores.

Well it wasn't "designed" to use multiple cores, but I forgot to patch it which does now enable multicores.:)

I said it because I tried it yesterday and it was only using 2 cores (core0 hovering 90% >100%, core1 just a trickle probably for windows etc)
Now with the patch installed it uses all 4 cores but much less than 50%, at 50>70 FPS so maybe I'm GPU limited.

By all means he could get a quad core etc as going from an older single or dual core will surely be a step up anyway for games unless your overclocked quite high already.

:)

Hi

It's a bit his and miss with using FS2K stuff, some seem to work well, others don't. Most companies have added updated their stuff to FSX, but obvously theres a price premium, but normally they have inproved the graphics and other elements as part of the newer version.

As for a 24inch screen. FSX will take advantage of that. I used to run it on one 24inch at 1920*1200. Though now I have three 24inch screens runnning though a triple head to go, giving me 1 big screen that I run at 5040*1050, it's amazing with that type of resultion split over the screens.

In a couple of months I'm going to be replacing the 4870X2 and Triple Head with a new 5970 so that will then allow me to run FSX at 5760*1200. :D

Thanks!

3 screens, that must look pretty special!!

I'll just try the add-ons and see how they go, I mainly use the PMDG 737, but looking on their site they've not currently released the equivalent product for FSX, fingers crossed it'll work.

Some of the other screenshots posted, have they been enhanced using add-on scenery? I guess some of the airports have! I like to fly the commercial planes, 737/747 mainly, and do like a bit of airport pr0n to take-off/land at.

Well my skills in getting good pics aren't as good as the previous two poster pcis have been, but here's a couple that I've taken during tonights flying

Heading down to the south coast from Heathrow on way to Charles De Gualle in a A318 with a nice sunrise, with Active Sky Advanced, Active Graphics X and REX 2 running.

Now a few shots of an airport called Lukla ( from LuklaX by Aerosoft), it's the highest airport in the world. It's near to Kapmandu in Nepal, heres a link to it in Google maps

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&s...8824,86.737061&spn=0.108379,0.220242&t=h&z=13

If you want to see some scary flying, run up you tube and search for Lukla.

It's a very hard runway to fly into as it's so high the engines on the plane lose a lot of power, also the approach itself is a nightmare trying to get a good line into the runway. Wouldn't like to say how many times I've planted planes into the hillside.

1st picture, taken off from Lukla, headed up the valley and now have made the turn back to run down to the airport.

2010-1-13_22-42-0-782.jpg

Basic line up, a little to far down the valley at this point, but height and speed ok

Same position with an outside view to give a good view of the approaqch to the runway (08)

Down on the ground and a safe landing.

Sorry for those who have asked me to contact them. Combination of being very busy and loosing track of this thread.

If anyone still has any questions or needs help with FSX related stuff, just let me know, will try to help out. You may find though that I have answered many questions and given much info in different posts over the past @6 months here, so check out my previous posts for any more info. Cheers.

Another way to contact me is to PM me on the screenshot forums on most of the major FS forums, like flightsim.com avsim forums etc.

Excellent, cheers Soya! Will definitely drop you a line at some point in the future for much needed advice on FSX.

In terms of Add ons there are hundreds,

I don't believe these companies are classed as competitors so I think I can name them for you to check out as they have many add ons for whatever you fancy, also there are numerous freeware places to get add ons (best to just google).

Aerosoft
Just Flight
Sim Market

As for traffic, the best products for this are

Traffic X from Just Flight and
MyTraffic from Sim Market

These add a huge amount of detail to the flights into and out of airports and can be based on real time flight details.

As for other add-ons I'm a bit of a junky on this so have loads so have listed some below.

Horizon VFR Real Scenery ( puts a new layer onto the UK maps to provide real photographic imagery, so you can fly over your house and see it)
HeathrowX - Updates the Heathrow area to allow for the current (inc Terminal 5) layout of heathrow.
Real Environment Extreme (REX2) - Allows modelling of the real time weather and updates graphics for many items e.g. runways/clouds.
Active Sky
Active X
Numerous new planes/helicopters
A number of other airport enhancements, JFK, Chicago, Lukla etc.

I've probably spent in the region of £250 on add-ons for FSX, your possibilities are endless depending on what you want to do with it and how much processing power you have in your PC.

Hope that helps a bit.

Taff

Taff question for you

Heathrow X or VFR Airfields (south) VOL 1??

since they are roughly the same price, how good is the heathrow airport?

This is pretty cool: http://www.liveatc.net/
