Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Some shots of the PMDG MD11. IMO the best paid for add on there is, even better than the 744 (and I love the 744)

After a 'aeroplane on a treadmill' discussion with my physics teacher earlier, he recommended that I got a copy of this...so I did :p

Looking forward to playing it, I can still remember playing FS 98 and 2000 with my dad a few years back! Time to go hunting for that joystick, I think :)

Beware EdAllonBy, FSX runs really badly with ATi cards. I cannot for the life of me get it looking anywhere near good on my system.

That is somewhat of a vague and general statement, perhaps you have not managed to get it to work for your specific PC but I use an ATI 4870x2 and I am very happy with the results, ATI works perfectly well with FSX. The main difference between ATI & Nvidia when it comes to FSX is that ATI cannot handle cloud volume very well in FSX due to the way it is coded whereas Nvidia has a much better way to handle cloud volume. On the flip side, ATI has slightly better mip mapping especially at higher resolution in FSX, so it can end up looking slightly better at very high res. All in all, if I would choose a GFX card specifically for FSX then I would recommend Nvidia esp the slightly older range, like 8800 gts, Ultra, 9800 best is any single core card with memory >512mb. For many people, this range seems to give the best overall result for FSX flying.

Here are some shots of FSX with REX & CLS DC-10, this model/plane compares very closely to PMDG MD11, only the flight model is not as accurate, but then again, at least you can it to fly within your lifetime :).

rubbish - these sort of comments made me nearly not buy a 4890

but it runs FSX like ad ream - far better frame rates than my 8800GTX managed

I'm just about maxed out (except normal autogen) and getting solid 35-40fps @ 1900x1200 with 4xEdge Detect FSAA

the FSAA works better than with the Nvidia cards too :)

Soya, would you mind if we chatted through MSN about FSX? I would like to ask a few more things if you wouldnt mind? (what addons are the best visually etc)
My email is in trust although not sure if you are configured or not for trust?

Sure, just started using MSN, just let me know how to contact you and will go from there.

Soya - where you buying all these addons ? somewhere discounted I hope otherwise you must have spent like 10 times the original cost of FSX ?

I been gathering addons since I got FSX, close to 2.5 years. I have learned to shop around, wait for discounts and search for coupons on forums, plus I won a few screenshots competitions over the past few months which either gives a free addon or a discount coupon. So over all, yes I have spend a fair bit on addons but saved a lot on them over all.

Also,

Here is batch of screenshots I took last weekend, been playing around with the AI formation tool, very cool utility. Also showing is the recent & pretty excellent F-14 Tomcat freeware.

So here is a selection from the entire batch which can be viewed in its entire at:

Enjoy:

A defunct high street shop that now has an online store is selling the gold edition of this for £24 inc which seems like a good deal, just ordered it and you can use quidco to :)

Are there any decent atc add ons for this game? Everyone gets told to fly straight in and i'm constantly going around which is getting very annoying. Once at LAX there were five of us on short finals which was just silly.

In terms of Add ons there are hundreds,

I don't believe these companies are classed as competitors so I think I can name them for you to check out as they have many add ons for whatever you fancy, also there are numerous freeware places to get add ons (best to just google).

Aerosoft
Just Flight
Sim Market

As for traffic, the best products for this are

Traffic X from Just Flight and
MyTraffic from Sim Market

These add a huge amount of detail to the flights into and out of airports and can be based on real time flight details.

As for other add-ons I'm a bit of a junky on this so have loads so have listed some below.

Horizon VFR Real Scenery ( puts a new layer onto the UK maps to provide real photographic imagery, so you can fly over your house and see it)
HeathrowX - Updates the Heathrow area to allow for the current (inc Terminal 5) layout of heathrow.
Real Environment Extreme (REX2) - Allows modelling of the real time weather and updates graphics for many items e.g. runways/clouds.
Active Sky
Active X
Numerous new planes/helicopters
A number of other airport enhancements, JFK, Chicago, Lukla etc.

I've probably spent in the region of £250 on add-ons for FSX, your possibilities are endless depending on what you want to do with it and how much processing power you have in your PC.

Hope that helps a bit.
