Microsoft scraps Windows 7 'E' version for Europe

Really? They've complained about IE using their own e logo? The same logo they've been using since like, forever?

Have a read below

But Opera's chief technology officer, Hakon Wium Lie, suggested in an interview Friday that displaying logos or icons could result in a natural bias toward Internet Explorer. The theory: The inclusion of Internet Explorer in Windows has made the Microsoft browser so ubiquitous that people see the IE logo as a generic icon for accessing the Internet.
"We're not sure about the use of logos," Lie said. "The blue 'e' has become so associated with the Internet in general, due to the bundling with Windows. We think using the blue "e" might not be such a good idea."

IIRC, but I can't find the article now, they also complained of IE being first on the list and also the description which Microsoft used to list IE in the ballot choices.

Yes because we all know that Linux/Chrome will be able to use DirectX games... it's your own fault you missed out - there are still pre-orders available but, like everyone else, you had a chance to get an O/S at next to nothing so don't complain when they put the prices up on release.

M.

yes was my fault entirely. Have rectified that now and have an E version ordered and paid for.

So the large in-depth review in custom pc (one of them i still get free anyway) the other month didn't have people gaming on linux then? Maybe I dreamt it, was something to do with WINE anyway. Maybe I drank too much of it.

Lets say Chrome launches, for pretty much nowt. All those users want to play games, the latest games. Are developers going to sit around scratching their arse's, or is something going to happen? Licencing of Directx maybe? games that donb't need it? Another anti -trust competition enquiry? You gotta love them EU beaurocrats, sitting around all day, over paid with nothing to do..

If there isn't going to be an E version, does that mean users can upgrade instead of a clean install even with a full version?

I'd like confirmation on that one too. I'd reckon it's fairly certain the full version will also upgrade but would like to see it confirmed.

I presume this means that the "second level" pre-order pricing for the full edition (currently at around £70-80) will be removed in favour of an upgrade version at around this price and the full version will move to the full price of around £150?

Those who pre-ordered Windows 7 "E" through a recent discount offer will get the full version, as Microsoft had promised.
As for the above - it's not 100% clear whether they mean those who pre-ordered will still get the full version OF THE "E" edition or wether the "E" edition will cease to exist and we'll all get full retail copies including IE8.

From reading it seems like they are just merging both the non-E and E into one type that has a ballot screen where you can pick your browser.

Think I'm gonna e-mail the company I pre-ordered from in case they try to do me over, which I wouldn't be suprised at from where I ordered it :P Plus they are still listing it as "Microsoft Home Premium E Windows 7".

i ask because ms store says in system requirements for e version that you must be running a genuine copy of xp or vista....

http://emea.microsoftstore.com/uk/Microsoft/Windows-7-Home-Premium-E?WT.mc_id=winonline_win7HP

which is stupid because if your doing a clean install there's no OS left. Also on the page linked above the e instructions make no mention of having to have an earlier version of windows.

I'm confoosed. and annoyed.

Usually with upgrades you don't even have to have the previous MS software installed. For example, with my Dads copy of Office 2007 he simply inserted his ancient Office 1997 when the installation process requested it just to prove he has previously owned an MS Office product.

Those of use who have pre-ordered Windows 7 will be getting FULL RETAIL which doesn't require proof of a previous installation/previously owned full disc.

Yikes. Was that price from a regular retailor and including VAT?

Those prices I posted were excluding VAT. I got 2x Windows 7 Professional for £159.98 (£79.99 each). I've updated post #5 :)

Anyone who pre-ordered for Windows 7 E will get full version - not upgrdae version as MS decided to changed it as it already too late as millions of people who already pre-ordered so it stick as full version instead of upgraded version - you dont have to worry about - it will be 32bit and 64bits in full version, MS just changed it in web browser meaning putting the Ballot Box in the disc like add up features.

Those E versions that were(still are)for pre-order were never going to be upgrades at all.
They were to be all full retail versions.
There was nothing said anywhere about any of them being"upgrades"in this country.

The FPP retail products were so cheap to replace where upgrade licences would have been were it not for the EU action.

I just had a quick question but I'm sure it should be ok to ask! Since I'm using an RTM version at the mo does anyone have any experience with Windows backup and restore? I intend to (if needed) use it to create a system image of my current install, install my retail version then restore using the windows backup image of the c drive.

I assume it's not the same as a drive image like TrueImage will create but a system image of apps, settings, profiles etc thus meaning I should be able to just backup like system restore but to a single image on external drive then restore to it later if needed?

Just incase I need to of course as I am sure the full version keys will work on RTM builds!

Opera's market share, compared to other browsers isn't that good...

Yes it's small, but it's still the fourth best from that list.

I've been using it since 2004: it has a few incompatibilities [I still have problems in Gmail sometimes] but I don't like IE, FF or Chrome so I'm happily sticking with it.

Heh, it has been confirmed that pre-orders are getting full version for sure yep?

(just checking!)

Some page I read that Microsoft promised that all who pre-ordered for W7 E will get full version as they cannot change to upgrade cos think people may cancel the order and lose more money so seem MS stick what they say on news page.

So see what happen after EU decide if accept that Microsoft change it but if reject then it may say as "E"... find out in few weeks time..

it not yet for Microsoft to dump "E" until EU decide the final answer:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/169454/microsoft_shifts_plan_ties_ie_to_windows_7.html

some part of it:

"However, even though the initial Commission reaction to the ballot screen was favorable, Microsoft said it would also continue with the Windows 7 E plan until the Commission made a final decision."

so it still not yet to be decide as Windows 7 "E" still stand until EU decide to stick or change to ballot as MS still sit and wait to hear.
