IIRC if you drag down from the top of the screen to the bottom it will close the current app.

Yeah, you're right, and that still feels pretty sloppy :p.

In IE, firstly it'd bring up the black bars with my tabs, as I bring it down, it'll change to the app being small, with my metro background colour (No animation) and then dragging it down (While still having no animation) till it appears at the bottom, and then take it slightly further and closes.
 
I told you how to close an app ages ago. Just like iOS and android, apps do not need to be closed down. Even less so in win8 there's extremely aggressive resource managment. There's just no need to shut apps down. Exactly the same as iOS and android.
 
I know how to close app's, I just think it's sloppy.
I like closing down my app's, you can't keep expelling every niggle someone has with it "Well, you can live without doing x or y"

What's so wrong about an exit button? (More so with games)

At somepoint you are going to have to come out of the old way of thinking and just roll with it.

I mean even if I manually close down the apps on an ipad, they soon all mount back up again.


Why more so with games? They are handled the same as any other app and are put in an extreme hyrpbernate mode.


It's not so much expelling every thing, it's a different way off doing things. The old way has gone with mobile devices, either you have to learn and accept the new way or stick to desktop and/or old OS. That's just the way it is.

Plenty of games can be closed on Android, they have an exit button.
And the same with the majority of applications I've used.

Say I run Fifa on my Xperia Play, I can exit the app through an actual exit option.

And even on an app that doesn't, I can set android to kill the application if I press "back" and "back" out of the app, can also set it where if I hold "back" it'll kill the app.

And even if there wasn't, to kill the app, I'd just bring up the app's currently open (Which is just one button click to bring up), and then slide to kill them (Which has a very smooth transition and animation that's lacking with what I've used of W8)

The W8 way of "killing" app's is sloppier, if it had a better animation and transition it'd be a lot better, most people won't know how to do it when they first get the tablet, the lack of animation would give the impression that nothing's happening.

About the SD card app install stuff... Samsung also purposely don't allow Android apps to be saved to SD cards on many of their Galaxy phones/tablets. It's the same reason why MS do the same...

Security reasons should be obvious, but theres also performance. Micro SD cards vary massively in speeds, it's hit and miss, but reading/writing apps to any SD card will just give the user a poor experience. Win 8 and RT both support DX11.1 as well (yet another massive advantage over Android and iOS) in time there will be games looking as good as Crysis 2 in the app Store, and desktop PC ports. Theres already a few Xbox ports in the Store, and even games with these level of graphics, you cant realistically read game data from a Micro SD card with random read speeds of under 5MB a second. You'll be there all year. Random write speeds on the fastest Micro SD cards wont even achieve 4MB a second. Most of the time you're looking at 2 - 3MB/s. Theres no reason to use an SD card when you have fast SSD storage for apps, otherwise you'll end up with an inconsistent slow and buggy mess like Android (and i'm an Android user).

I think MS made the right decision here and put user experience first. Don't expect this to change in the future.

2 things, firstly I don't know anyone who bothers to close apps, they simply move onto the next app they want to work with. The only people I know that fiddle with apps like that are techies.

Secondly, what exactly is wrong with the animation? You drag down and it animates moving it to the bottom where it becomes semi-transparent and shrinks until you release where it fades out, should it be doing star wipes and lens flares as well?

What tablet are you running on (is it even a Surface?) and what version of Windows? MS have released a pre-release patch which includes improving the behaviour of the drag down.

However it's a change in habits, there's no benefit in closing them down as has already been said. You can also close them from the left hand bar, right click close, and if you have a keyboard ALT+F4. Some apps will no doubt have an exit option.

You might be alright, they might be holding back web orders to ensure they have them in stores.

Annoys me though when any firm promises specific dates, then put them back without any explanation - it's just not good service.

It's probably because they've sold out of the 32GB version. The site probably wasn't updated in time when he ordered. They've also just sold out of all versions on the US site, so i'd expect the UK site to follow soon.

And most places allocate stock for online and stores separately. If anything, most places put online priority first.

It's not a surface, it's an X86 tablet with Windows 8 32 bit Pro from MSAA on, however we're talking about metro/modern UI, which is looking to be consistent in RT and Windows 8 X86 (Unless of course everyone thinks they're going to be different, which wouldn't make sense)

I know how to close it with a mouse and keyboard in desktop, but we're talking about purely metro/modern UI and touch input.

For the animation, all I'd want is it to move with my finger as I'm dragging down (Instead of teleporting) and then fading (Like Android)

Or, when you're able to bring up the left bar with the app's in, be able to drag them to right bottom to close them (Might make more sense to be able to drag left and close them) or even hold finger on to bring up the right click options.

For all those who have had pre orders delayed, I'd be pleased that Surface appears popular enough to have sold out in a week. Kinda silences all those people who say its going to flop.

Not if they only made 11 tablets available for pre-order. It is not uncommon for a company to fake scarcity to boost sales.
