*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

I've added a shortcut to trigger saver manually. Wouldn't normally worry but have bought an Oled monitor.
You mean a shortcut to the actual Mystify.scr (or whatever) in System32? Because if so and running that doesn't even flicker onto the screen, as in starts and immediately stops, then I'd be at a loss. If running that seems to do something even if only for a split second then other powercfg commands may help track down what's causing it.

Does the system remain asleep if you tell it to from the start menu?

Ah apologies. Yes, I've made a shortcut to the .scr file so click that when going away from PC but leaving it on. It works fine manually.

I'll run through some of the other commands etc, see if I can find something that works. A google of the issue shows it's not particularly uncommon and a bit a pain to resolve.

I doubt it's this but maybe worth checking if anything has set the policy to disable the screensaver, open regedit and make sure 'ScreenSaveActive' isn't set under HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

If this is anything to go by it's down to putting the managers who were responsible for Windows Phones in charge of Windows...

I guess all you can do is adapt, personally I'm not a fan of what i see as dumbing down of Windows but i suppose it makes it easier for those who don't care about these sorts of things.

And while most people are so passive about it and/or even support the **** work they do nothing will change :(

There is only so much you can adapt - Windows 10/11 already goes beyond any realistic adaption for my uses but there aren't alternatives.

I realise it's horses for course so I'm not trying to minimise your issues with it but speaking personally, while it's a right PITA, I've not come across things in 10/11 that can't be tamed, removed, worked around, or whatever.

The thing that annoys me most is none of the things i do should be necessary, i shouldn't need to disable DTC as it should be disabled until someone needs it, i shouldn't need to de-fang SMB as it shouldn't be running unless it's needed, i shouldn't need to remove five, count them, different XBox apps, and event log collectors, and my biggest gripe the connected device platform if I'm not going to share stuff with a 'smart' phone.

It's not just those as the list goes on, and on, and on. For me it's 90 odd services, 60 odd tasks, 8 NIC bindings, etc, etc. It's like Microsoft don't know what reducing the attack surface even is.

/rant :)

Problem is though you can tame many of those things - it doesn't necessarily mean it stays that way - far too many times an update has broken tweaks, sometimes purposefully or removes functionality like for instance where they are progressively making it harder and harder for people to only use local accounts - which doesn't bother me that much as I use my live ID anyhow but can appreciate how it impacts on other people.

Might update to Win11. Finally updated the BIOS and drivers on my machine after it blue screened earlier today. Suspicious of the Win10 update yesterday.

Can I expect all my programs to work in Win11 or are there compatibility issues? I'm mainly concerned about AutoCAD and Inventor since it's for work.

Well, there are. It's just a matter of whether those alternatives suit you, or do what you need them to do.

Microsoft really should make things optional.

ROFLMAO. Yeah that'd be nice but - irrespective of which version of Win 10 or 11 they do push updates which sometimes can remove/lock out certain options.
AT least there are heaps of YT videos on how to optimise Win 11 user experience.

For my uses there isn't - amongst other things I use quite a bit of older software for game modding, etc. which won't work under Linux, etc. I'm fairly conversant with *nix especially Debian and Ubuntu but they couldn't replace my day to day desktop use.

I updated today (about 2 hours ago). Only took around 20 mins or so for it to install and get back onto desktop. Seems ok so far, no need for driver updates etc, all programs still where they should be. Taskbar pinned items still there.
Only things I've done so far are remove the widget button (not a widget fan) and get taskbar back to the left :) Honestly wouldn't realy know I'd changed.

I'm increasingly seeing/having to interact with 11 at work now, had to install a printer (!) and set as default, holy hell what a cluster **** that is. I think I found 3 different UI designs, either kill off control panel or don't lord. That is all. :)

I find it funny at work, we've several IT people who are hot on whatever the latest OS is and how great it is, but they keep having to roll back production systems to 7 for reliability reasons and/or have moved several systems to IIRC Arch Linux (I'd have to double check what flavour of Linux it actually is) because 10/11 cause so many problems - even after they had an external company produce a heavily modified version of 10 to try and avoid some of the issues - we had several instances where a restart has been scheduled, inappropriately, through SCCM which IT deny was done by them resulting in reviews of the deployment situation.

Kind of annoying because it works OK like say 90% of the time or more but that 10% or less when it doesn't just isn't acceptable and I have no idea how the MS developers could be so out of touch.

Not sure if this will help anyone here, but we do get a slew of new folks from time to time. I've mentioned for years that my Windows has never needed a clean install, because it always runs like a clean install, and has done since Vista. Well i finally got round to recording a video highlighting my regular routine and the various things I do or use to keep it that way.

tell me about it, I am not a fan of W11 but have to keep dealing with it for work as well with customers getting new computers

Has anyone used patch explorer to bring back the W10 start menu and quick launch options
