*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

One of the frustrating things with the stupid approach by MS - it leaves people having to use 3rd party software just to get a decent experience at the risk of making themselves vulnerable security wise. Long past time MS pulled their heads out their behinds.
It’s unlikely that they ever will. We’ll be seeing more ads soon enough, and I can see them making Windows free as they’ll make money from the platform or subscriptions.

When consumers don't kick back and people even defend MS it definitely isn't going to happen :(

Frustrating as well most people can't really see where they are going with stuff like TPM and how ultimately that is hostile to the end user.

This is why people love Linux. If only everything worked on Linux like it does on Windows.
Linux is going through a really strong development phase at the moment. A lot of investor in desktop and gaming so there’s a world where it becomes a viable alternative for many.

I personally love Linux for work and general use but the gaming side needs another year or two.

I use Linux, mostly Debian or Ubuntu, quite extensively, though less so the last couple of years, it is a long way if ever from replacing my normal Windows workflow unfortunately or I'd have been shot of Windows years ago.

While I used to look forward to new new Windows releases I just couldn't care less anymore. Windows 10 was the nail in the coffin for me. The only place it gets used now is for Work. Linux is perfectly acceptable in the majority of cases and I don't feel I've missed out at all since making the switch. After the base install I just run a small (not very complicated) script I made that configures all my settings and the software I want so within ~30 minutes of booting from a live USB everything is back exactly how I want.

It's also a shame so many people keep trotting out the 'must use Windows for gaming' line because it really isn't true anymore in the majority of cases and, for the most part, you don't really need to do anything special to get games working - especially on Steam.

I beg to differ. Steam OS on my Steam Deck is tedious. Having to use different versions of Proton to get games running, then there's launchers not working properly, gamepass, anti cheat etc etc. Spending so much time tinkering just to get stuff running, I installed Windows on the deck in the end and everything just works as intended - gaming wise, no more headaches.

Not that I disagree with anything he says, to say Tiny11 is infected is a bit of a leap. That modified exe does set off alarm bells though. Again, it's all plain to see on GitHub and people can make their own decisions. RevIOS is all config files, PowerShell and batch files the last time I checked, no exe files.

Personally the best way is to do it all by hand on your own ISO I agree.

I'm not sure he said it was infected, just that it could be. (unless you're going off the thumbnail but then I'd say that's more a consequence of the algorithm).

On his investigation of ocsdimg.exe it seems the Tiny11 devs updated that on their github page in the last couple of weeks and the digital signatory now has a date, all be it out off date (2022 expiry) and there's still the size mismatch.

I've said similar to you in the past that people can make their own decisions, no one's going to force someone to do or not do something. :) I posted that video more as an educational, have people considered, sort of thing. I knew about the illegal to distribute Windows ISO's thing but i never actually thought about why someone would risk that, about what's in it for them.

e: Totally agree that the best way is to do it yourself and I've said so in the past, it only took me a day to workout how to use powershell enough to remove/disable all the junk from a Windows ISO. (then i wen't a bit loopy and spent months pre/automatically configuring loads of things)

Would I hell trust a 3rd party OS that's not from the correct developers. I bet most OS floating around like that is infected with something.

Even if it isn't infected with something, you've still got to cope with whatever choices/tweaks the "developers" have made, that suits their individual preference. (In the case of ReviOS mentioned earlier - even things like "Integrates a privacy focused browser - Brave", maybe I don't want this, I'm quite happy with Chrome thanks :D)

I guess I've been very lucky with pretty much all my games then as there's usually very little to do. Yes you might have to use a different Proton version but that's literally just clicking an option in a dropdown menu so isn't a hardship at all, though if you have to install one the Glorious Eggroll Proton versions you do need to go the extra step and download the archive and extract it to a folder, but again that's all there is to it. Not rocket science or time consuming.

Anti-cheat is probably the biggest issue as developers seem to go out of their way to make it not work on Linux even when the API has been provided that lets them enable it, though again it's not something I've had an issue with primarily because I don't play any games with it enabled so that's probably why I have an easier time. The only time I've interacted with it was with Lost Ark and as the devs are refusing to enable a couple of EAC settings at their end and drop a file into the distribution I only ever played it on GeForce Now, and got bored of it fairly quickly so didn't bother anymore.

I don't have a Deck so can't really comment on that as I'm not interested in mobile gaming on a piddly little screen :).

You don't need to keep Brave. That was the first thing I removed once I installed Rev.

Not the point. What else has been preinstalled? What reg tweaks will I have to undo because they've changed something to their preference.

It's bad enough Microsoft forcing poor design choices on us, without other "developers" adding their 2p worth

The only other stuff I've noticed is the ease of access stuff, like :

Original right click menu
Right click taskbar to show task manager
Right click file to take ownership etc.

All good stuff.

There's a few of these around now, perhaps Microsoft should take note and give the choice back to the users. Not that it would ever happen, I'll keep dreaming. It's been a long time since I've done any GPO in anger, but I can imagine 10 and more 11 being a pain for admins to lock down.

After today's patch Tuesday Windows update I get the message at startup that HWINFO64 cannot load as the driver is being blocked by Core Isolation. Turning off Core Isolation (memory integrity) solves the problem.

This was na issue when Windows 11 launched for those using HWINFO64 and other apps that also polled low level components to read metrics. MS fixed the issue in later builds of the OS, looks like similar is happening now.

For now I've disabled Core Isolation, it was actually off until more recently where I figured I'd turn it on finally lol but as a power user it is likely to prove more troublesome than desired.

Tiny11 is infected?

That guy Chris Titus is an idiot! :o:mad:

Tiny11 is NOT INFECTED!!!

NTDEV replied to Beware: oscdimg.exe in this repo is not the original from Microsoft thread:

Hi! The oscdimg.exe from this repo was taken from the MSMG toolkit v13.2, since it was the one that I used and that I had at hand. If you check the SHA256 hashes for that one and the one from here, it should be the same: 5048A219B9DEA36C489020889200456CE2D394B91A737A09753D9BFDB7461A87
Judging from the copyright of the file, which says 1983-2012, it might be from an ADK from Windows 8 era.
Obviously, one can use their own executable, or none at all if they don't need an ISO.
Hope this clarifies any issues.

I went to MSMG Toolkit website but v13.2 was not there so I googled Toolkit_v13.2.7z and downloaded it then checked oscdimg.exe version 2.56.0.1010 SHA256 hash matched 5048a219b9dea36c489020889200456ce2d394b91a737a09753d9bfdb7461a87 modified 14 Jan 2023 03:43:14, file size is 140KB. That confirmed NTDEV claim that he is not the creator of modified oscdimg.exe so MSMG Toolkit developer is actually in fact the person who modified oscdimg.exe file.

It took me hours to find Windows 8 ADK as it was no longer available to download from Microsoft website.

I installed Windows 8 on VMWare VM then installed Windows 8 ADK and found the original oscdimg.exe version is same 2.56.0.1010 but SHA256 hash is different 89433ff17dfbdee1fabd0e1e552db0bc4e97701eadf8515a333c99f159c055db modified 25 Jul 2012 19:18:00, file size is 123KB.

I found Chris Titus made a video in 2021 about how to used MSMG Toolkit, weird he never NOTICED oscdimg.exe was modified!

I googled to find the oldest MSMG Toolkit on internet, it was very difficult to find the first version 1.0 but found version 8.8's oscdimg.exe version 2.56.0.1010 SHA256 is different again 367ea9c2e99a38b2fa62708f4028319daf61e2d8e286d7bb3de8aa21c8601ac0 modified 4 Aug 2018 01:33:06, file size is 131KB.

it appeared that MSMG Toolkit developer modified oscdimg.exe everytime he released new MSMG Toolkit version since first version 1.0 back in 2013 but I cant believed NOBODY questioned developer why he modified oscdimg.exe rather than used Microsoft latest official version for every versions of MSMG Toolkit kept gone undetected for 10 YEARS!!!

MSMG Toolkit developer posted regularly ***elsewhere*** since 15 July 2011.

I see you didn't bother watching it then and just decided to go off on some sort of rant.

Why you, or anyone for that matter, choose to defend people who are breaking the law is beyond me, what do they or even you have to gain?
