Midweek Football Thread 20 - 22 *spoilers*

Nobody posting in here? :p

Bitterly disappointed to lose, 13 shots, 8 on target, hit the post 3 times in the first half, went in 1 - 1. We were outstanding in the first half and couldn't understand why it wasn't 4/5 to us.

Preston, 3 attacks, 3 on target, 2 goals :(

Scrappy second half, and we weren't very good.

Its a good question of who would Liverpool replace Benitez with, after the world cup you'd get more choices but many really suitable for pushing for a title, not many, Hiddink.

Dalglish hardly seems like a move forwards, frankly Brucie seems to be very very capable of getting the most out of his players, really moving up as he gets more and more experienced. Had you got Brucie at least you'd probably have Catermole instead of Lucas :p

To be honest I think any half decent manager that doesn't freak out when they get ahead in the title and constantly attack their owners in the press would do better than Benitez. I find it hard to sympathise with a guy who throws a childish tantrum because the guys upstairs want 2 whole weeks to discuss spunking 15-20mil on Macherano, 2 weeks that were 6 weeks before the transfer window opened. I can understand being a little irked had they said that to him on I dunno August the 31th 11.59pm.

I was quite shocked when Souness said 67 players have been signed by Liverpool in the last five years, yet theirs still only 2 or maybe 3 players of recognised top quality...

Another average performance and this time we paid for it with a late goal. I think we just need to try and keep our heads above water until we get some players back from injury, with so many widemen out we can end up with a congested midfield and the forwards drifting out to the wings.

Still in pole position in the group but we lack the consistency to compete at the highest level right now.

Only 2 or 3...

Reina, Johnson, Mascherano, Gerrard, Torres and you could easily argue Benayoun, Kuyt, Agger, Skrtel, Riera and Aquilani (as yet unproven in the prem) as "recognised top quality" not to mention youngsters like Insua and Nemeth as "recognised" future prospects.

Yes, we're playing badly right now and we do have limited depth, but some people are having a LAUGH with some of the **** that's coming out.

how he lasted as long as he did ill never know

Because Steve Gibson tries not to sack managers, he gives them every chance.

Although, I would like to know why he waited until after a win to sack him? Seem's a bit of a strange one.

lol

gerrard and torres, maybe masch/bena would be the only ones who would get into the Man U team, rest are poo :p

My view on tonight's results

I dont believe a single result against Utd is anywhere as important as the next CL game ....against Lyon again I believe in 2 weeks, and therefore they need both Torres and Gerrard as near to full fitness otherwise surely they are out of the CL this year (yes it may well depend on the other game that night, but either way they need a point if not 3 in that game to hope to qualify)

Of course if they can get three points on Sunday they will go for it, but the financial rewards for getting through the CL group is far higher than dropping a few places in the EPL therefore I cant see either of Gerrard or Torres playing

The psychological boost of winning such a major EPL game is a huge factor without a doubt - but would anyone risk both such influential players in a match on the possibility either / both could easily get immediately injured again (and imo no one links with Torres anywhere as effectively as Gerrard - and surely after tonight Gerrard is unlikely to be started)

Maybe Johnson will make it and his crosses could well be what Torres needs with Gerrard out (if he is out), ......how many "just back from injury" first teamers do you risk starting if you are Benitez?

(Ive said plenty of times already Utd are FAR from guarenteed a win by any means, but with SG's injury tonight it does put a different complexion on the team imo - with or without Torres)

We won't win on Sunday, I can almost guarantee that. No matter how bad Liverpool are playing, they will be up for this no danger. For the past 4 or 5 years we have played against a team that have been on the ropes and we could have put them to the sword by effectively ending their season one way or another and we don't do it.

I'd love to be proved wrong but my spider senses only point to a Liverpool win or draw at best

Just back from Ibrox. 1-4 WOEFUL!

I give no player pass marks except for the keeper and that coz he didnt nothing wrong for any of the goals. Woeful defending for equaliser then 3 delections.

I dont like hearing fans booing their own team but tbh last night and in current econimoc climate people are paying out a lot of money to go see the game and watch players who mostly earn more in a month than the fans in the stand earn in a year put in 0 effort or performance. Scottish football as a whole has fallen so low its unreal. Not one team in European football has put in a good performance leading to a good result except maybe Motherwells 2nd leg at home in their first qualifier and Rangers fightback in Germany to earn an away point.

My sense is telling me hte same thing (especially as it now looks like Rooney wont be playing either)

Really hope Benitez doesn't get the shove, he's doing a great job.
The Lyon midfield was streets ahead of Liverpool's, they were just sharper and more intelligent.

You created it stupidly early before any of the fixtures kicked off which is why I (and I'm guessing everybody else) didn't see it.

Bit daft how the larger thread got mushed into the smaller one.

Blame vBulletin, when you merge threads it always does them in chronological order:)

Arsenal fans can't complain really on last night's showing. Good, controlling performance without a full team, away from home in Europe. The players looked tired but that's understandable with the amount of games some of them have played in the last week or two. The team are through to the next round (may sound arrogant but I believe they will do it in their home games easily) and if it wasn't for the last minute freak goal it would have been another excellent result.

I thought Song was outstanding, he was everywhere, somehow over the last few weeks he's added yet another massive aspect to his game, being in the right place at the right time. I can't remember seeing a player improve this much in front of my eyes, he's excellent and there aren't many I'd swap him for in this form. Hope he keeps it up.

The worst thing about last night was probably the attitude of the players, they looked like they knew they were through and didn't ever seem to lift the tempo even though they could have had more goals, they didn't seem too interested. This over confidence was what they suffered from last year, hope it doesn't start to creep in this season

That will be Tummy creating a thread for every major event now, so in the future they'll be dragged up from the past and new ones merged into his :p

AS for Benitez doing a great job, meh, for the money he's spent, and lets ignore the incoming cash and just look at the outgoing, because most "top clubs" don't sell successful players for no reason, top clubs tend to pay big money, keep the best players, sell on the crap ones for a loss. Benitez seems to pay big money, sell the good ones for big money and keep the average ones he couldn't make a profit on. The one thing I'll give him is selling players for very very good money, often a profit on players that haven't remotely deserved it. But thats not how to win a league, selling your players when they are worth a lot shouldn't be top priority, keeping the best players should be. Utd kept Ronaldo for maybe 2-3 seasons longer than he wanted to stay, and won title after title doing so, and then ended up with fantastic money for him. Benitez would have sold him at the first 30mil offer and won nothing.

But after so many years, how can you have such a threadbare first team, a terrible back up team and possibly a couple youngsters for the future. Every team can boast a dozen players who " might" make it, most don't, even if they look great in the reserves, means nothing to be honest.

Barring the odd game, Reira is useless, Babel worse, N'Gog, Caragher, these aren't title winning players, Benny has the odd great game but other than being clearly clearly better than Reira and Babel, isn't that good. Reina, Torres, Gerrard, Macherano are very good, but other than those I doubt theres a single player who would start at a top 3 club in any of the big leagues.

Again Arsenal fans make excuses about injured wide men, whose out, Nasri, who has been moved away from the wing, Theo, a hopeless winger, Rosicky, again is a more central player. Eboue played very well yesterday, and Arshavin is the 2nd best player in the squad, hardly knackered on the wings.

I'm so gutted about Liverpool's season so far. It's going from bad to worse and god knows what will happen on Sunday.

:(

I cannot believe how much we are missing Alonso.
