Midweek Football Thread. *spoilers* 25-27

It's not extreme as it has happened before for blatant dives that UEFA have reviewed based on TV evidence. A two match ban is the norm although a further warning of expulsion from the game should also be issued as diving is cheating and it's ruining the game.

A single goal can and does upset the balance of the game. The only people you will find defending this dive will be Arsenal fans and the odd bitter Rangers fan.

Whats your take on the laser getting flashed in his face then Eddie or was that a bitter Rangers fan or an upset Arsenal fan or just Juan Ghuy??

Should Uefa not take action against Celtic for this???

Note if you read through this thread I stated it was a dive and not a penalty.

PS yer out anyway so GIRUY

It was a clear dive and they should give retrospective punishment for it as they should for all dives which aren't given by the ref but are obvious on camera (note that quite a lot of times it's not 100% sure it's a dive but in this case it definitely was).

Got to agree with this. The dive's got a very disproportionate amount of attention. Bear in mind also the player in question hardly has a reputation for it, yet seems to have attracted more attention than those familiar names that do have a deserved reputation.

Weird, for some it's a dive, yet another time with another player it's called playing clever.

I don't think it's because it's Arsenal persay, but because it's a big team and they were playing another semi big team

Probably because the game was 2-0 on AGG and who knows what the outcome would have been without the dive.

Rubbish, for all the tie Celtic were crap. Before the pen and after they barely threatened. Two shots throughout it says it all, the first in the second leg was their goal in the 90th minute.

Your point is only really valid in a much closer game/tie.

I stand by what I wrote above.

There was a Lithunian guy who got punished a few years ago.

If Eduardo is to be punished, as a football fan I want consistancy across the board. Ed still was touched last night and it's fairly common for players to run into keepers / wait for just enough contact to then fall flat on the floor.

What also about players simulating to get clever fouls in their dangerous parts of the pitch? Simluation's still simulation.

At the end of the day it'd be great to get rid of it - but it'd be much harder. Yes a player can get fined and banned for two games. But say e.g. there's a cup final. A player dives, wins his side the trophy and then is banned for next year's first two matches. Say e.g. a match pivotal to the league compaign three games from the end is between the top two. A player cheats, wins his side the game and therefore the league and still gets banned. The incentive's still there in both cases.

It's an over reaction to the dive.

He dived, nobody can say he didn't.
I'm enjoying the witch hunt though, some of the punishments people are throwing around are laughable :)

I don't understand the fuss about this. It was a dive.

There are lots.

How come this one is getting so much attention?

Um, it was Arsenal, English people love to hate Arsenal, especially the press. They won't concentrate on the fact that Celtic could have been playing for 20 hours and wouldn't have scored, that's not important.

But there was contact, Boruc's leg hit Eduardo's leg causing the initial fall from Eduardo (no where near enough contact to go down, still, contact) and also Boruc's arm touched Eduardo's legs too I think*. He went down to con the ref but I'm sure I see similar every few weeks, people are over reacting on this one. I've seen MULTIPLE cases where Stevie G doesn't even wait for contact, he's on the floor before anybody has seen him, much less touched him.

Edit - Anybody notice how amazing Tommy V was last night?! He's playing to a really high standard, same with Willie G. What happened to Arsenal's defence

oh please.

Eddy dived there was no contact, or are we counting the goal keepers invisible arm pushing him over.

Eddy dived, cheated, to get a penalty.

I also, take note that Celtic could still be playing now and wouldn't of scored, does this somehow make the fact a player cheated right ?

I don't think a team, as wonderful as Arsenal need to cheat to win football games. The media / football fans are over reacting and the witch hunt is amusing.

If you post here a lot, you'll also know that Gerrard gets his fair share of stick over his dives. In fact I made a thread about it ages ago. All players dive, it's part of the game, it needs to be stamped out.

You saying i`m Odd??

:D

Stonewaller and Boruc should have been sent off and made to clean Eduardo`s boots after the game as an additional punishment for stopping a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Top entertainment last night. Watching C*ltic being dismantled by a poor Arsenal side, Dragon`s Den and then Shooting Stars.

I have a feeling Carlsberg had a hand in all of this. :D

I don't think they cheated to win the game, Arsenal were always going through to the CL in front of Celtic, even before the game at Parkhead kicked off, Arsenal looked second best for about 20 minutes out of 180, saying they cheated to win the game is a bit harsh

Just wish the likes of Fabregas, RvP, Arsh, Rosicky, Nasri etc could have started and beaten Celtic 6 - 0 or something, it was frustrating at times last night watching the second choice midfield/attack

Yeah, don't assume I think what Eduardo did was fair, he conned the ref. Still, bit of an over reaction on here

Seriously, it actually feels good to have a decision like this go Arsenal's way, it so often goes the other way and it's infuriating, the only reason I'm not that bothered is I know what comes around goes around in football and Arsenal have had enough bad luck recently to cover about 5 more penalties like last night

Wenger continued, "Is it acceptable? I have never asked in my life any guy to dive to win a penalty, but sometimes players go down because there is no other way to escape the goalkeeper’s tackle, sometimes they dive. We got a penalty against us two years ago in the quarter-final of the Champions League that made the difference when [Liverpool's Ryan] Babel dived.

"Nobody ever apologised to us, it was a blatant dive and nobody spoke about it."

I agree with that to an extent. What about the one at B'ham against Clichy in the 07/08 season, why does it matter when Arsenal do it but never when it's against Arsenal :(

You're defending him. Don't he cheated. Arsenal, proved they are more then good enough to beat Celtic without cheating.

I don't care about the dive - what should be banned is Arse-shavings little finger to the mouth 'shush' celebration. Every time I see it I wish someone would ram that finger down his throat!
