Military coup in Turkey?

Looks like this coup is fizzling out.

Erdogan's call for people to come out has worked.

As already mentioned one part of the army have already separated themselves from this.

Tanks blocking the airports?

Mate has just posted to another forum, sitting in an airport in Turkey awaiting his flight in 1 hour with his family. Says everyone is chilled, watching the telly with the security people, but doesn't feel oppressive where he is.

Shocking scenes! You'd expect some level of warning shots / scare tactics but this is mental.

Think it probably is warnings.

They aren't mowing people down, just hitting a few. Warning shots only work a few times. Looks more like short sharp bursts when they get too close, and then stopping as soon as people stop.

The people in big cities hate Erdogan, his main support comes from underdeveloped regions and Islamists so I doubt a popular resistance will save his skin. I must say, he didn't look so tough now, speaking on that phone.

Not sure about that - quick google seems to indicate the US has a reasonably sizeable protection force there which wouldn't just roll over for the Turkish military given the equipment stored there.

Interesting though that all non-essential personnel were evacuated from the base a few weeks ago - does seem to indicate the US had some kind of idea something was coming beyond moderate security concerns.

I doubt they'd be attacking it but securing it from potential pro-Erdogon forces. The US troops there will be a sticky situation, facing their allies in their own country, they would have to roll over if it comes to it.

You seem to be really over reacting to my post. Please calm down. You can bow to me later.
Not overreacting man. Just reacting to the idea that you know ALL that can happen and that there is nothing to worry about.

Precedent in this situation says that civil war is an entirely possible outcome.

Apparently France shut their embassy a couple of days ago as well. Whether all that is true...

That isn't how the mandate for those forces protecting those bases work - they are equipped to face off against a groundwar until reinforcements arrive as well if it came to it.

Why would you attempt a coup if you're not sure the majority of the citizens will support it

It is the way many coups go - they believe that the mood of the populous is with them and hope that they will come out in support for them once it kicks off - it is usually the way most coups are decided.

There is 100s of outcomes all of which are possible and i think what i typed.
You think what you think.
Its all good.

Disgusting, just watched the military shoot into crowds of civilians. How anyone can be cheering this on is staggering.

Hopefully and by the looks of it the government pull through and hold all responsible to account.
