Military coup in Turkey?

As horrible as protesters being killed is, few coups are bloodless. If the military needs to use force to assert its authority, so be it.

Given your political views in other things, I'm not surprised you have this ridiculous view.

I know you're the kind of person who wants it all their own way.

If all the pictures are right, people are coming out against the coup.

They've lost. A coup either needs to firmly take control with bloodshed or needs people to support them. The former isn't going to happen, and the latter is against the coup.

As already mentioned one part of the army have already separated themselves from this.

Although that seems to have come from the Daily Sabah which is simply a propaganda outlet for Edrogan's party so I'm not sure how true it is. If it is true that is very worrying, because a military on military conflict is a whole different level of chaos and violence.

It is the way many coups go - they believe that the mood of the populous is with them and hope that they will come out in support for them once it kicks off - it is usually the way most coups are decided.

It's also why the main communications buildings are always the first to be secured. Stop broadcasting from anti coup groups and stop them calling people to arms/the street. It's not as easy now in a more western country due to the ease of broadcasting (Erdoğan on his phone for example).

Like him or not erdogan is the elected leader and has a solid approval rating.

It is fascinating watching people talk about spreading democracy blah blah when it suits them, aka Iraq and then on the other hand cheering on a military coup.

Just shows how full of **** they are.

Completely random thought that just occured to me - hope it doesn't detract from the graveness of the situation - but my god does his highlight the power of social / new media.

If I read the situation right the group that attempted the coup took control of all state broadcasters to get their message out, and deny any attempt of response from Erdogan. Erdogan gets on FaceTime, calls people to the street... and it seems to have worked.

Turkish military has a long tradition of intervening to restore the secularism bough to Turkey by its modern founder (post Ottoman era) Kemal Ataturk.

Erdogan presidency has been characterized by him being more of a demagogue than a respected democractic leader

Dangerous times ahead but Turkey under Erdogan was suffering and the regional situation was made worse by having an ISIS sympathizing islamist in control of Turkey

As previously mentioned Erdogan's power base is in the more rural 'traditiona' areas and he has less support in the big cities
