Minecraft (online Lego essentially)

been thinking of a list of features we'll need in the arcane university/magic castle/whatever we call it.

A nice big snowy mountain with gorges we can build snow coverd bridges between :p

a large mob grinder, probbaly use a nice simple square one + it's pit below then we can clad the outside of it in a fitting round tower that looks like it belongs in a castle :p

large library with enchanting tables.

large alchemy rooms with stores, + brewing stands water sources + some nice decoration.

Large collection of green houses producing all the needed plant materials

a small passive mob farm.

a nether portal

on the nether side a mob grinder to farm blaze rods etc, we'll need enchanted picks of silk touch to mine ice to build this.

if possible/if we're lucky a strong hold will be nearby/underneath so we will have an end portal.

anything else?

This is probably a project for the Linktart server...but here's my thoughts :D

A suitable location is going to be very much dependant on the seed used for the new 1.0 map, this could easily have a large impact as I've generated and rendered many maps; you can easily end up with a map many would be unhappy with due to skewed biome distribution. This map is probably the most favourable distribution I've rendered so far: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=20595959&postcount=1988. It also contains a relatively flat plains area near the centre with a very nice ravine in the middle, suitable for a spawn location.

Building next to or over a Stronghold is something that may be contentious due to there only ever being 3 unless of course an admin  places an End portal in your chosen location instead.

The room descriptions have a self contained fortress feel to them that is totally self sufficient and can act as a staging area for further exploration/adventure. Assuming the proportions are achievable by mortal men :p

lol did anyone else see the 'Mojang Developers' Panel' live stream?

I caught the final 20 minutes before the Q&A.

Can tell these guys don't often talk to the public, let alone a conference full of people. Not to mention the topics?! Talking about back-end servers and administration?!! What the hell has they got to do with us?! The whole 20 of so minutes of what I watched was laughable and in parts felt uncomfortable to watch.

The Q&A was also ridiculous in terms of questions and (you guessed it) answers.

doh wrong thread :p

yeah it's hopefully a community build to get all the difficult magic/enchanting/alchemy stuff together in one place

What on earth have they done to the sound effects in the game?! Were the originals copyrighted by someone else or something? The new ones are absolutey dire in comparison. Why?

oh iirc strongholds are now unlimited per map.

but come back to the server syl my chests are messy and i haven't built anything in months out of apathy :p

when retail comes out it'll be a full fresh start not even a pick axe to my name

you got any plans for builds?

Unfortunately even in the 1.0 release there is only 3 strongholds per map, that piece of code hasn't been updated in a while

Already registered for the server again ;)

Your last build went really well until the final large cavern which eventually broke the will to live of just about everyone. Might need to scale back epic ever so slightly

Not got any build plans as such, you were always the ideas man, I was more about practicality and logistics (read ocd).

minecraft wiki says unlimited strong holds for 1.0
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Version_History#Minecraft

Not sure where they got such info, I've been using a utility recently that locates them and the author claims that the code is unchanged and is still 3. I'm pre-generating another large map and will use my own utilities this time to verify if there is more than 3, it will take a while but I'll post back results.

Edit: Confirmed this, still only 3 per map in final release code.

I avoided playing this game for so long because I thought it was "online lego essentially" and that sounded tosh. I eventually tried it and found it was so much more.

Do people prefer servers with/without mobs?

Generally speaking most online servers are either configured as Creative (unlimited resources/no mobs/no animals) or Survival (obtain all materials the hard way/mobs and animals enabled). Both of these are very popular, personally I prefer Survival as it adds so many more elements to the game.
