Minecraft (online Lego essentially)

I could host one at work, if someone could send me a server config.

Only on a 10/10mb line but it handles 24 player TF2 fine so should handle a fe wof us on MC :D

Download MCAdmin, it's a server mod/server host application. Works a treat, been messing around with it tonight but I can't seem to get it to work outside my local network. Just keeps hosting on an internal IP and trying to connect to my actual IP fails.

If anyones hosting on linux:

Some of my old minecraft scripts I used to keep the server running and backed up, may be useful to pull ideas from. Unfortunatly I can't easily share the admin control panel I made for it - that made restoring the map file from griefing a lot easier.

Also something I was testing before I lost interest - can't remember if I got it working or not* (2 versions) that would backup the map file on new client join

I expect theres some nice utilities out for it now even for linux but I thought I'd share incase it was useful.

* can see one flaw in it already in that if the date changes from the startup time it doesn't check paths correctly before writing backups.

The new server mods are pretty smart, you can set levels for various people. Basic guest can only walk around, they can't remove any bricks or anything.

They have autosave and everything built-in, it's come a long way from how the game was when it launched :)

Dammit! Why did no one tell me this game should be avoided if you have any interest in going to work the next morning, I'm not going to get asleep until the early hours now :(.

EDIT: I made my first torch...yet somehow it feels like I've just invented a cure for dumb people.

Is this worth £8 ?

Would someone mind explaining how fun it is ?

Yes and Very. Hard to explain, it's like lego. If you like building stuff it's great, if you like playing a single player sandboxy type game it's great, if you like being scared it's great.

I nearly pooped my pants earlier, was exploring a huge cavern network. Lost some health to lava and just caught something huge jumping at me on the corner of the screen. Bloody big spider killed me :(

Ok, ive bought it, now what do it do !

I'll admit, it looks like fun but I am so confused atm.

Ok, assuming your playing single player. First of all it'll be day, but night is coming and with night.... comes monsters!

First of all get some wood, find a tree and bash away at the trunk. It'll disappear and a wood block will fall. Pick it up and you'll be holding a wooden block. Use it to bash more wood until you've got about 13-14 bits of wood.

Next find a cave with some coal, stone with black flecks through it. If you press I, it'll take you to an Inventory with a small crafting section of 4 empty spaces you can place stuff in. Drag all the tree trunk blocks in here and a picture of wooden planks will appear on the right. Keep clicking that until all the tree trunks are gone. Now you have planks, but what will I do with planks I hear you say?

Now you make sticks, do this by dragging the wooden planks into the crafting box in in the Inventory screen (I). This time, put half the planks on one sqaure in the bottom and half in the top. Now pictures of a stick will be on the right. Keep clicking until you have lots of sticks but don't use all your planks!!

Put 1 plank in each of the 4 crafting spaces and a crafting block will appear on the right. Take this and drop it in the cave near the coal by right clicking in front of you when your holding it. It'll appear on the ground. Now right click it and you'll have a crafting screen with more spaces. Take the sticks and put them in the bottom middle and lower middle middle of the crafting screen. Then take 3 planks and place them along the top of the crafting screen. Like this (= means Sticks and @ means planks and ... is empty)

@@@
...=...
...=...

This will make a pickaxe which you can use to mine, mine some stone and some coal and then make a stone pickaxe which will last longer. This is done in the same way as above but substitute planks for stone blocks. Once you have coal you can make torches for light, this is done by placing one stick and one bit of coal with the coal on top of the stick in the crafting box. Now you can make light.

Now your fully armed to enter the world of Minecraft, try and block up your cave with stone or mud or anything so your safe for the first night.

Reading the minecraft wiki is a good idea too :)

I made a castle. :p

There's another cliff/hill right next to it, gonna make another castle on top of that and then link them together with a bridge.

PS: This game is like Civilisation in the fact that you play for what seems like 5 minutes, but then you look at the clock and realise 3 hours have disappeared. :)

So tempted by this game, few of the guys in TFU play it and sounds great fun but question its staying power.

Do you get access to the new version on release if you buy the old/current one?

Had an absolute blast last night after buying it, spent about 4 hours just messing around and getting to grips with things, building a little home in a cave with storage, furnaces etc. This game is going to eat me up :(.
