'Modem mode' VM firmware imminent ? Looks like it.....

Our R30 firmware includes the following changes:

1. Adds the Modem Mode feature.

2. Incorporates fixes for lock-ups (where the Super Hub appears unresponsive to traffic and the admin pages are unavailable) and reloads (where the Super Hub would reload for no apparent reason) while under heavy load in 2.4 and 5 GHz wireless modes. These symptoms were caused by a memory leak in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless driver. As part of these fixes we've changed the number of channels available under 5GHz to 4.

I don't think this is anything like the complete list, #1 is the major feature from R28 to R29 and #2 is the major feature from R29 to R30. I was a bit surprised but despite many firmware beta testers asking for it in the restricted beta test forum pages a full set of release notes from R26 to R30 wasn't produced. I have been reading in the main forum today and there is a mixed response, a lot of people complaining that xbox live wouldn't connect, but it turned out to be coincidence as xbox live network was having problems on the same day the firmware was released. I personally have had R30 on my router since a week last Friday and it's been rock solid, where as before with R26 my hub would crash and need restarting at least once a day.

mine has been poor. I have only just got my super hub but since I've put R30 on its locked up twice. I just connected via cable and did a speed test, got full speed but I couldnt connect via wireless and I couldnt access the admin page of the super hub. I might just have to stick it in modem mode now, shame.

just wondering anyone got Wake up on lan working over the internet ??

Thanks,

Yes.

Successfully turned my machine on from sleep via my android the other day using the Unified Remote app. It will NOT turn your machine on from off state though... not sure what is required to do that.

Got magic packet turned on under my network adapter settings, that was all that was required afaik.

R30 seems to have fixed all my wireless problems.

When connecting to my works VPN I was getting continual disconnections throughout the day, but since the upgrade its been rock solid

Thumbs up to VM on this one for a change

Just got my new firmware set up :) So far so good. Modem Mode with Dlink DIR-615 (with DD-WRT), seems to be working pretty well!

Mine too. I am thinking of getting an Asus RTN56U router to replace the DIR615.

Anyone have the Asus, and if so is it any good, the range on my DIR615 while better than the super hub is still a bit hit and miss, I was hoping the Asus will improve it.

I'm happy with R30.

If i dont get any lockup's over the next couple of days, i'll be retiring my old wrt54g again. As it is at the moment it's been perfectly good with decent speeds over wireless, no modem mode needed.

If I was you, I would look at wireless bridging so you can still use your current router. Then perhaps put the second router near the edge of the range to extend the signal, not all routers come with this functionality so try and get one that you can flash dd-wrt on.

So, what is the best router to get if I'm going to use modem mode?
I was looking at the linksys/cisco ones, specifically the x3000, but it's a bit expensive.

So what's out there that will give me really good wifi, gigabit Ethernet and a few other toys like qos and such?

Thanks guys :)

I don't particularly want to use my current router, I only want a single router, it also needs Gigabit Ethernet which the Dlink doesn't have.

I currently have a Zyxel AV200 home-plug router extending the range however that creates two networks and while it is ok for a wired network for streaming HD to various TV's in that part of the house, the wireless is still pants.

I asked this question elsewhere but had very little response - wireless bridging is - I think:

router / wifi ----------------wifi / 2nd router.

What I want to set up with my SupeUselessHub is:

VMSH router with wifi - router connected to Homeplug ---------------Homeplug / 2nd router with same wifi (SSID/security) as VMSH.

i.e extending the pathetic range of the VM SuperHaHaHub. Is this possible

So both routers will be wired to the same network with homeplugs? if so then its not wireless bridging that you want. If you just want to extend your wireless coverage then all you need to do is set up the 2nd device to use the same SSID, same encryption method and key, but make sure you use a different channel, otherwise you would just be creating interference for the other router. Also make sure the 2nd router is wired in via its LAN ports and not its WAN (sometimes just labled as internet) port, and that DHCP is disabled.

Wireless bridging on the other hand is what you would use if you didn't have a homeplug connection between the 2 routers, as the wireless bridge would allow a 2nd router to join the first routers network as a client which would allow any devices attached to the 2nd router access to the main network even without a wire between the 2 routers.

I can get WOL working from my phone / ipad through whatever app when it's on the wireless. ( when I'm at home )

When I try it over 3G / over the internet I can't get it working. I tried forwarding ports and what not but no luck :(
