Monaco Grand Prix 2011, Monte-Carlo - Race 6/19

Not a good day for Hamilton. Not sure what they were playing at leaving it so late. Did he have a car problem, didn't he, did he insist on going out early, did he not? Too many opinions and not enough fact at the moment.

Either way, he starts 9th/10th tomorrow and the finger starts 1st. I know who I'd bet on. Great stuff from JB though. I wonder what his car setup reads like for the grid..

Hat off to MS for getting 5th place.

Unfortunately I don't think that's completely on merit as it was an odd session, but he did alright! How I'd love to see him on the podium, that'd be special!

I tend to follow Lewis nowadays. I like that he wears his heart on his chest, and always gives it his all. It's endearing, and there are no questions over his bags of talent. Shame about what happened, but as someone rightly said, as soon as those lights go out it's all forgotten anyway. I still think Vettel would have held the top spot though, despite the Q2 performance. They always seem to have a bit in hand in qualifying.

Also glad that Perez wasn't seriously hurt, fantastic news. He was really flying as well, super talent to keep an eye on there. Maldonado also managed to drag his dog of a car into the top 10. How did that happen anyone?

Looking forward to my favourite race of the year. There's something special about seeing the cars parading around the street circuit, it's such a spectacle that you just don't get in big boring tracks like Turkey, for example. Abu Dhabi has it better, it seems like one massive stadium in places, makes for a more impressive atmosphere.

EDIT: Also I'd like to echo the comments about Mclaren's strategy decisions. I find myself baffled sometimes, they really seem to be trying to be too clever, and it ends up biting them all the time. Red Bull had it nailed.

I would just rather an exciting, close season like we have seen in the past over a boring season with Vettel running off with the championship. I don't get what is so difficult to grasp from that sentence?

I gather that, but Vettel getting pole at this race doesn't really make much difference to anything.
As many others have said already, it's just one race, it doesn't make or break the season.

It's the hype machine in full effect, I don't even think Hamilton would have got close to that time by Vettel. Even if he had, it wouldn't mean he'd win the race.
Certainly wouldn't do anything to change the season.

This year just seems like any other f1 season to me, the best car is winning. Domination isn't anything new. If people are bored, than that is their problem.
The last few races have been great to watch.

People should complain about Webber more if they want excitement, he's been massively outclassed by his team-mate. The only person who could bring the fight to Vettel and he is consistently failing.

Maldonado also managed to drag his dog of a car into the top 10. How did that happen anyone?
He's done well in quali the last couple of races, hopefully he'll grab a point or two. Williams need it!

Down to 10th, as it turns out.

Linky dink.

I suspect he'll be pretty furious right now....

Did wonder how that one worked at the time. He didn't even bother attempting the turn, just drove straight over.

That sucks and seems hash. should have just took the lap time of him.
Anyone know the range of punishments they can give for it? Was it the minimum.

God, Hamilton is a child. One that can drive quickly, but a petulant child. Surprised he hasn't blamed anyone else for missing the chicane yet.

Instinct I should imagine. I thought they were supposed to put their hands on the chest.

Shouldn't they fix that bump on the road? It clearly destabalises the car under braking.

No. The usual attitude is, the drivers could slow down if they want to. They don't want to, so they should live with the bump.

That's what Charlie usually says when they complain about being launched into air because high kerbs etc. Slow down.

Something needs to get changed there though - hopefully both the bump and the barrier. Too many drivers have ended up in a similar situation. I like Monaco, but that little section should be improved.

Why remove the bump? Everyone knows it's there. Everyone knows what can happen if you get it even slightly wrong. Why remove a challenge? After all, there are precious few left these days....

The barrier....eh. It's about as good as it can be with the layout of the track and the constraints that TPTB have to work with. I'm so glad Rosberg missed that tyre wall this morning because with the speed he was going and the trajectory he was on it was only going to result in one thing - him getting royally ****** up. But at the end of the day - these guys are being paid the big bucks, these cars are built tough, they know the risks going in....Grand Prix racing is dangerous, people can get hurt. No-one wants to see it, but the possibility is always there. If you re-work that bit of the Monaco circuit then you have to re-work other circuits to the point where there's no challenge any more.

***edit***

Hamilton does start 9th in the end, TPTB have put him ahead of Perez who didn't set a time thanks to that shunt that he had.

The one thing I like about Monaco is how unforgiving it is, I hate all of these huge run-offs these days.

That section of track just seems unnecessarily dangerous at the moment though. Like you say, Rosberg would have been in a lot of trouble had he hit that barrier.

The drivers always have the option of slowing down before the bump....

Given that the gap from McLaren to Red Bull has always been smaller in race trim I expect Button to be faster than Vettel tomorrow. Button to win for me. Then Alonso then Vettel in 3rd with Lewis in 5th.

Luckily Perez is ok :)

Looking forward for the race tomorrow, shame I'll have to stream it while at the uni library :D

Damn you F1 conflicting with exam revision around this time of year...

He kept his nose clean and made it count where others missed out, so think it was fairly deserved :) It would be good to see him on the podium this season. I was certainly not a fan of his during his glory years, but respect his come back.
