Monaco Grand Prix 2012, Monte Carlo - Race 6/20

I thought this was the Monaco GP thread, not the "bickering about meaningless stats" thread...

yea lets get back on topic the monaco master officially is MSC.

lewis topped an autosport poll the other day for the monaco master even though he only won it once :D

fanboys gotta hate msc trolling them :D

That GP2 crash out of the tunnel was a bit crazy!
If you thought the GP2 one was bad, try this one from GP3. The guy defending with no rear win needs a ban for a couple of races. Completely idiotic.

Daly and the marshall on the raised gantry are very, very lucky. Also, the driver of the blue car ~55 seconds who hits the flying wheel.

Have you never seen an OcUK F1 thread before?:D

It's serious business! :D

:D MSc did win 1997 which was one of the best Monaco gp performances.

But people must also consider that drivers go through good and bad form.
I personally think that Vettel and Button haven't hit top form, while their team-mates have entered the season at their best.

I fully expect Button to improve by a few percentage points and the same goes for Vettel.

Yep Button will improve this year I have no doubt about that. He's lucky in the points Mclaren have thrown away for Hamilton this year though.

Button had his best year last year, Hamilton had his worst. Yet the gap still wasn't that huge. Yet again today you saw a reason why Button will never win a title with Hamilton in the other car. He just cannot get the job done on saturdays. Yeah he got away with it early on when they could line up 1-2 but when the car isn't the class of the field Button just makes it too hard for himself.

The only way he would beat him is if Hamilton has another shocker of a year. Button will still have 2 or 3 races this year where he will be untouchable but will carry on sticking too many cars in his way on saturday.

A good lap from MS, hopefully his luck has changed so we can see what he really has left in the tank.

Webber's sum best qualifying is 0.476 seconds faster than Vettel (or 0.079 average per qualifying session).

However;

Vettel's sum fastest laps are 0.732 seconds faster than Webber (or 0.146 average per race).

They keep swapping places which suggests they are both really close.

Thanks for those stats.
Statistically they are close, but when it counts, Vettel scores the bulk of the points. Webber the (slightly) better qualifier; Vettel the (slightly) better racer.

No worries. :)

Webber has been fourth in every race except Spain, while Vettel has won a race, dropped out of the points in another, come 2nd, 5th and 6th in the others.

If Webber can capitalise on pole tomorrow he'll be looking pretty good.

Nice to see Alonso and Massa so close!

Shame about Kimi, and what is Jenson doing o.O Webber being on pole is pointless, Nico, Hamilton and probably Grosjean will go straight around him judging by his start history....

Didn't actually watch Quali, but will watch the race tomorrow :)

Don't worry, the Monaco master will take a beating tomorrow, by his team-mate, in identical equipment :p

wont be suprising given he has a 5 place penalty and rosberg doesnt

I'm no fan of Button before anyone brings it up but, I can't see where he'll improve. He's doing worse because he's getting caught further down the field. Qualifying 2-3 tenths down on Hamilton is pushing him further back, he did the same the past 2 seasons, he's always been that much slower no matter what. The difference is the cars are bunched MUCH closer in the top ten and pushing to get into Q3. Button has always sucked at overtaking, he's a timid little girly man, Monaco with vastly better tyres, he didn't just not overtake he backed off and waited for a mistake. Being pushed further down the field, with more competitive cars, he's less able to overtake than Hamilton/Alonso/Vettel/Kimi, so he's getting pushed back, and unable to get past them.

I don't think he's had much bad luck at all, infact the only "poor" race surely was the one in which he clipped a car, completely his fault, which cost him a pitstop, and he locked up his tyres, and came out trying to catch up at full speed and ruined his tyres ruining his race then he decided to drop a point, maybe two, to get a new gearbox without penalty.

Aside from that he's just been unable to pass, considering the way racing is going this year, cornering more down to driver skill than insane downforce in corners, and overtaking being essential if you aren't on pole, these are just Button's weakest area's, always have been and likely always will be.

Without Mclaren suddenly getting a car that can put Button on the front row every race, I fail to see where his form will improve. Luck can, he can get some lucky pit stops, and pass people in the pits, the only place he's really passed people for 3 years, but form/real luck/failing car/bad pit stops haven't cost him an awful lot this year at all. Hamilton has lost significantly more points from team mistakes and rotten luck than Button.

Should be a good race today!! I'd like Hamilton and Schumacher to be on the podium, perhaps Alonso to make up the third spot

Been playing with my spreadsheet some more:

Hamilton's sum best qualifying is 5.758 seconds faster than Alonso (or 0.960 average per qualifying session).

Hamilton's sum fastest laps are 0.444 seconds faster than Alonso (or 0.089 average per race).

Button's sum best qualifying is 5.064 seconds faster than Massa (or 0.844 average per qualifying session).

Button's sum fastest laps are 3.423 seconds faster than Massa (or 0.685 average per race).

Crazy that Hamilton's qualifying average is nearly a second better than Alonso but his race pace is less than a tenth of a second!

If you needed proof that Button is doing better than Massa (apart from the WDC points), not only is he nearly a second on average faster in quail, he's well over half a second faster on race day.

I've got too much time on my hands. :p

This is not proof of anything, this is just writing down numbers. Do some ANOVA on it to see if the difference is actually significant, the gaps are only marginally different.
