Monaco Grand Prix 2014, Monte Carlo - Race 6/19

Everyone always says they are on a knife edge inches from the walls, but every race every year all the drivers do the same thing lap after lap never touching the walls.

I dont think it is like they make out.

The drivers do not race flat out so are almost never going to hit the walls.

Exactly, why would you race flat out when you can go 5 seconds per lap slower and the car can't pass you anyway.

Are we thinking Mercedes are going to continue to dominate, or could Red bull's good chassis cause an upset?

I always though red bulls strength was in high speed corners, I can't see how that will really help in Monaco, in previous years they've been weaker here than other places (although, often still good enough to win).

I don't understand how real F1 fans cannot love F1 at Monaco?!

Its pure driving, on the razors edge. 1 tiny mistake can end the race. There is a reason why the drivers hold victory here in such high esteem.

F1 and Monaco are the finest of bedfellows.

Exactly this!

Not an overtaking track, but the racing will still be thrilling. Need to head along there in the next few years to see it up close.

Well if we're making wild predictions with no basis then I'll join the club too.

Prediction: The sky will remain blue for the foreseeable future.

Well the sky isn't actually blue........ it just looks blue to us due to the scattering of the blue wavelengths of light by the air molecules :D

Exactly this!
Well the sky isn't actually blue........ it just looks blue to us due to the scattering of the blue wavelengths of light by the air molecules :D

But isn't that true of almost anything, it looks coloured because of the wavelength of light it absorbs or scatters? Nothing is intrinsically 'coloured', the perception of colour is simply our brain's interpretation of the wavelength of light that interacts with the electrons of said object.

As they are currently talking about, the last 10 mins of fp2 was effectively like qualifying, with everyone getting blocked, on such a tight track with little to no overtaking being easily doable. With a clear lap I'd bank on Hamilton, but with such squirmy cars somewhere like this really swings to Alonso/Hamilton over everyone else for me.

It does irk me, there is no particular reason that qualifying sessions should be the same length at every race. Of course you still tend to have a fastest time to be on track and a longer session wouldn't change that, but it does make it easier for at least everyone to get a clean lap. Likewise crashes/yellow flags(for a decent amount of time) or a red flag and they don't add time on to the session has always been retarded.

Guys what is going on with Kimi?
Most people in F1 thought that this year, we were going to see a good inter-team battle at Ferrari. But all I am seeing is Alonso dominating Kimi?

I think P2 sums up Kimi and Alonso.
Alonso in first place.
Kimi in last place.

I reckon sebastians magic safety car will put him in second. Just sayin' :p

:D

To be fair to Maldonado (and I've not said that much), he's raced here 3 times in F1 and arguably he wasn't responsible for any of his retirements - he was taken out by Hamilton, caught up in the knock on effect of Grosjean hitting Schumacher, and then hit by Chilton.

But back when he was in Renault World Series ... http://www.gptoday.com/full_story/view/417502/8216Banned_for_life_Maldonado_lucky_to_be_in_Monaco/

With regards to Kimi, I'm not really talking about 1 session.
I am talking about every race/session so far.
He is not driving like a top-line driver. From what I can see, is getting beaten by a larger margin than Massa was.

What is also interesting is that the top bods at Ferrari and Merc have both stated that Alonso is the best driver in F1.

Alonso's response was to suggest that he is not appreciated by his own team.

Back in 2007, if you'd have told me that in the next 7 years, Alonso would never win a title, I wouldn't have believed you. IMO, Alonso has to leave Ferrari, now. Personally, I think he should move to McLaren and make one last attempt for a WDC.

Its a shame that we the audience, have been robbed of a close run title race, for a while, now. I like to see the best drivers, in the best cars, all fighting for the title and right now, this isnt happening.

Anyway, early predictions for the Race.
1. Hamilton
2. Alonso/Vettel/Rosberg
3. Alonso/Vettel/Rosberg

GP2 runs (or at least has done, don't know if they still do) a split qualifying session with only half the cars on track at a time. It's a reaction to them completely fouling it up a few years back and crashing into each other all over the place.

To avoid anything like rain happening between the sessions they do each half of the grid. One session does even numbers and the other odd. Can't remember how they decide who is on pole though.
