How is this is no-lose situation?
By hiring a rookie, they are effectively admitting that 2014 is also a write-off.
Button hasnt got a hope in hell of winning the title, unless he gets a car 0.5s/lap faster than everybody else.

Just like in 2013, when they conceded the title race, before the season started by replacing Hamilton with Perez (which was laughable), they are doing it all over again.

When Kimi's negotiations with RBR were rocking, McLaren should've been right in there. When Kimi signed for Ferrari, McLaren should've been de-stabilising Alonso. Instead, they are going for a rookie?

With so much money at stake, it begs belief that they are conceding the title so early...again.

The decisions being made (which are ultimately signed off by Whitmarsh), are gradually turning McLaren into a mid-field team.

With all due respect to you I'm sure Mclaren have all the necessary data on Kevin from his work on track, in the simulator (where he is said to be trouncing Perez) and his achievements in lower series.

Word at Mclaren is that KM is blindingly quick - and besides - didn't a certain British driver get the same sort of chance in 2007? That didn't make Mclaren look stupid now did it?

McLaren have a history of making bad design decisions which end up ruining their season, and then bouncing back. Witness, 2004, 2009, 2013.

By that progression they'll have a couple of good years then mess up 2016.

"AUTOSPORT has witnessed Magnussen maturing both in and out of the car since then. He switched from Carlin to DAMS for 2013, and Jean-Paul Driot's team worked hard on him at the start of the year to make him more co-operative with his engineers.

Once those early bumps in the road were ironed out the results were spectacular. Magnussen combined his undoubted speed with an incredible consistency: ignoring the race he was excluded from for a technical infringement (which cost him a win), his average finish this season was third.

On top of that, he took five wins, eight poles, 13 podiums, 15 top 10s (to score points) and he finished every race.

Kevin Magnussen, McLaren, Silverstone F1 testing 2013

When asked if Magnussen was ready for F1, DAMS boss Jean-Paul Driot recently told AUTOSPORT: "He has a great future. He is very good mentally, and this is the most important thing.

"He knows how to manage everything and he will not be distracted by all that Formula 1 brings."

McLaren was also impressed with his ability to manage risks during races. Highlights here included knowing when to back out of moves while dicing with da Costa at Monza for the lead, yet having the bravery and awareness to pick his way through from 16th to second in the wet at the Hungaroring.

Everything about Magnussen's 2013 FR3.5 championship-winning season proved that he had mastered the art of blending speed with common sense, intelligence and good decision-making.

As the man himself told AUTOSPORT after sealing the championship at Barcelona, he is as ready as he can be given that F1 seat time is so limited today."

Sounds very promising and exciting. I can't wait to see what he can do with MP4-29 :)

The relative lack of testing in today's F1 seems to hamper rookies, pulling a Hamilton is much less likely now. Still, Magnussen is in the series on merit unlike several others, and McLaren have Vandoorne moving up soon along with four other drivers in their YDP.

This is Mclaren that with all the data couldn't spot an important part on the wrong way around in testing, the same team that let Hamilton walk without much of a fight, that focused on all the wrong things and decided a brand new car while everyone else was tweaking 4-5 year old cars to perfection was a good idea.

Just because Mclaren think something is a good idea, doesn't mean it actually is.
