Motorsport Off Topic Thread

In motorsport the penalties (except in driving standards) are nearly always retrospective.

In a sport such as football, penalties are nearly always applied instantly, but there are many wrong decisions each match. If you had the time to analyse and gave those in question the chance to answer their case, a different stance may be taken.

Each has their own benefits, but each their own pitfalls.

Personally I think in the case of technical infringements, it's probably better to allow the technical experts and team to put across their side and punish retrospectively. I just hope it never happens in the last race of the season, deciding a championship (we had it in Sepang in 1999, but I think that's the closest we've come).

So was letting him enjoy the podium at his home Grand Prix. It wasn't his fault. Yes he most likely woudn't have finished where he did if they lowered the fuel flow but again that wasn't his choice.

Its a team sport you cant separate driver and team. The team cheated which means Ric did as well, regardless if he knew or not. It makes no difference.

I just think its wrong that something blatantly outside the rules was able to be celebrated on the podium on the day (wrongly) when McLaren should have got a double podium for their legitimate performance after not getting a single podium the whole of last year.

Looks like Gillette is going to be smothering the McLaren livery then:

hmmm will have to see it on the cars but so far Im not convinced

I know they are a huge company, but in a way Im still surprised budgets are big enough to be a major F1 sponsor (or maybe they arent the major sponsor McLaren were due to announce)

P&G are massive, Jenson did Head and Shoulders for a bit?

Will JB have to be clean shaven all the time now then? Surprised that wasn't in his contract anyway, certainly will be now with Ron back and a Gillette tie up :D

What annoys me about this is that FIA knew about it during the race, but they still let Ricciardo go on the podium, give him trophy only to take it all from him a little bit later. It's so unfair on the driver. IMO they should have given RBR 50 points penalty/ exlude them from construction champinship but give Ricciardo his place back.

What about Button then who was at his first race without his dad, everyone wearing pink, imagine him up there. Not to mentioned the fact that it would have helped McLaren greatly to getting a title sponsor.
The whole thing stinks.

Ive seen photoshoots from last year with him holding the razor but he is covered in stubble lol.

It's a shame for Ricciardo tbh but he gained an advantage by it, Red Bull were obviously using him as a guinea pig so that they could test the water and challenge the fuel sensor regulations. I bet if the FIA had somehow never noticed it Vettel would have been running it next race with Ricciardo's car back to being legal (slow). ;)

Hopefully in a red and white livery. Mercedes can keep their silver :D
The colour scheme that McLaren use is of their own design. I swear I read somewhere Ron Dennis saying he was proud of it and that McLaren changed sponsor logo colours to fit in with their colour scheme and not vice-versa. So unless McLaren decide to change their colour scheme for Honda, I can't see red and white McLarens when Honda turn up.

True, and the story behind why they did it is interesting, however silver (or chrome) is more synonmous with Mercedes and historically it is Germany's international auto racing colours. Honda being Japanese historically has used white and red in motorsport. Marlboro as McLaren's main sponsors was also a convenient tie-in to their colour scheme at the time.

yup i feel sorry for Ricciardo but not Horner and Co... they knew they were doing what all the other team's weren't and took a risk - it back fired, instead of gaining a few points they went for the big points and it didn't pay off. They knew they were being underhand with it so serves them right.
