Didn’t Marko or Mateschitz come out and complain that Hamilton’s latest deal, also worth around €50m a season, was too expensive for F1? Pot, meet kettle.

Apparently Max will be paying for any parts he’s responsible for breaking as well.

Yep, a lot of his F1 future. There must be break clauses for number of points Red Bull has by certain stages of the season each year or what position he's in the tables surely?

Wondered that too. Saw an article earlier this week about the potential deal and the salary along with a linked article saying that Marko had previously said Lewis' salary was ridiculously high. Bit silly as surely Red Bull don't have to contribute to Lewis' salary so who cares? Perhaps Marko meant it in a way that if Mercedes pay Lewis that then eventually we'll have to pay Max that to not leave us for Mercedes?

Oh and who decides if Max is responsible for breaking parts? Will there be some kind of RB board made up of engineers and mechanics to evaluate blame for each part breaking collision? :D

Could this be a way of getting around the budget cap? Teams were complaining last year that replacing parts/chassis ate into their budget too much.

Driver salaries aren't currently included in the cap, so if a new front wing or floor for example come out of Max's' pay, could that mean more money for Red Bull to spend elsewhere (R+D?)

Where would that even end? 'Max was driving the car when the Engine blew, he is paying for a new one. Not Red Bull'.

Then at the end of the season the team reimburses Max for the cost of the parts by giving him a 'bonus'?

Surely it’s irrelevant who actually pays for thing things in scope of the cap… the cap is still the cap…

Or you’d just get, ‘oh yeh, this sponsor donated all our front wings to us for zero cost this year’...

That isn’t how caps tend to work.

Cloud cuckoo land I think, purely invention..

The arrogance of MV is outstanding. You’d think at some point he was asked what sort of number would be suitable for him to sign up for 5 years. To come up with practically the same as a 7 time world champion is just hilarious. Who else would honestly do that? There’s knowing your worth, then there’s taking the ****

What a strange thing to be angry about.

Surely it was a case of RB asking Max, and his family/advisors, what it would take to stop him wanting to move to a rival team, probably Mercedes, and Max turned round and said he wanted to be on the same salary as Lewis if RB wanted to make him a long-term RB driver and expect him to not look for a way out if the team's performance dropped. I reckon they didn't want a repeat of Vettel leaving for Ferrai and knew they would have to pay Max big money to keep him with an expectation he would see out the contract and not jump ship.

Who said I'm angry? I said I find his arrogance outstanding.

That's my point. If you were a driver in Max's position with one dubious championship under your belt would you really be putting yourself in the same league as Lewis? I doubt it. I'm sure a lot of drivers in their heads have an arrogance about them that tells themselves they're just missing the fastest car, to be the number one. And that they're just as talented as Lewis. But I doubt anyone would be going in demanding the same salary as him because there's an element of reality that comes into play.

What has Max's new contract got anything to do with Lewis? It's all in your head.

Well they finished 1 and 2 in the last championship and are going to constantly be compared to each other. Salary is one of those things, so why not?

PS: Rather interesting watching Sky Sport's F1 new video entitled Defining moments of the EPIC 2021 title race. I said it all year (and the comments agree) but seriously, there's not a single clean overtake by MV in the whole season. You could call the video "All the times MV forced LH off the track in 2021". Any other race director/stewarding team would have had him out on his ear and he wouldn't have been challenging for the title.

PPS: So pumped for the new season!
