Given what he was saying on Thursday, I don't think he has gone of his own accord:

Alonso’s deal to drive for Alpine expires at the end of this year. However he made it clear today he intends to remain with his current team.

I would like to stay here,” he said in response to a question from RaceFans. He intends to begin discussions with them during the summer break and expects a quick resolution.

“I will be on holidays, bosses will be on holidays as well so we need to fix some video calls or whatever,” he said. “But when two parties want to agree on something, it takes 10 minutes. When two parties fight to agree on something, maybe one of the sides is not happy. So it will not take more than 10 minutes with whatever I am talking.”

Talks took place between Alonso and Aston Martin – then known as Racing Point – before he returned to F1 with Alpine in 2021. “We spoke in 2020 when they were very competitive, obviously, and winning races and in the podium,” he said. “And it didn’t went well and I came with Alpine and I’m happy where I am.”

Although Alonso conceded a move to Aston Martin is a possibility, he would prefer to stay where he is. “All the teams are an option as long as they don’t have two drivers signed,” he said.

My priority is to be with Alpine because we’ve been working and developing this project together for two years now. We are more and more competitive and probably my wish is to stay. But we didn’t sit down completely and move forward things, so still everything’s ongoing.”

I was thinking that considering how quickly this has happened Alonso's Alpine deal must have been ending at the conclusion of this season. I can't imagine Alpine letting Alonso go this quickly if they had another year on his contract. Unless of course they felt that they had an F2 driver in reserve ready for the F1 seat.

AM and Papa Stroll are investing Millions in a new HQ with wind tunnel as well as getting staff from other teams too. This could be a master stroke by Alonso in a couple of years time.

It also makes things much easier for Alpine who can now promote Piastri. It also makes it much easier for Williams who have been thinking about NOT taking Piastri and maybe promoting Logan Sargent who is their academy driver.

What amazes me is how quiet they kept this. If this had been in the works for several days then no one heard a thing. Most unusual.

I mean I can only but assume they were paying Seb a pretty penny :p

According to the interwebs, Alonso is on $20m, $5m more than Seb, this year. These salary lists are always a little questionable though.

(Mind you when you're already worth $240m, how much do you care?)

Sounds like Alpine only wanted to give Alonso a years contract, ah well their loss is AMR's gain, massive commercially for them too.

Probably all but sorts out the grid now, Piastri to Alpine, Sargent or De Vryes at Williams and I expect Mick and Zhou to stay pit at Haas and Alfa for another year.

Only question mark really is do McLaren decide to pay off Ricciardo but I can't see it.

If Pourchaire wins F2 - which I think he will - then what do Alfa/Sauber do with him? Zhou's unexpected quality puts them in a tricky position, they've been grooming Theo for that role for years, are they really going to leave him on the shelf or have him spinning his wheels for a year? I wouldn't be surprised to see Zhou go to Haas, and Pourchaire to take Zhou's seat at Alfa.

I can't see it either. He at least seems to be getting more comfortable with the car, and results are slowly seeming to improve. I can't see who they would put in who would really be a better option at this point.

I can't say I'm too surprised, when it came out that Seb was leaving, my first thought was that Fernando might go over as they need the driver experience. I still think Aston are going to be up there fighting for the top in the next couple of years and although I'd have loved to see Seb driving for them, I won't be upset if it's Alonso.

If Alonso still has wild aspirations of another title, it keeps him in the shop window for 2+ seasons, short term pain for hopefully long term gain.
