Yeah, they said it a lot but also said it’ll take time to fix. (And will likely be next year). So the fact they are fighting for podiums already is a very good sign.

I can’t remember if it was the last race or a grid walk rerun I was watching on YT, but Adrian Newey was there standing right next to the Mercedes with a clipboard and pen :p It would be interesting to know what goes on under cloak and dagger though, I bet it happens…

I always remember Brundle commenting that a lot of the "old school" tech guys like Newey and Brawn learned more from having a nosey at a car on the grid than they ever did from anything else but that was years back

Mercedes said they had a new floor ready to go but couldn’t produce it as it would have put them over the cost cap. I’m sure , had they known what the penalty would have been for doing so, they’d have done it.

There's no doubt that goes on. I would have thought it would be harder for a team to pay off all the exposure a view of a car gets, than the other way around. Imagine how many people took photos or footage. I suspect teams do employ people who's jobs are quite literally to spy within legal grounds on each team, and report back status of other teams etc. Dare I say it....perhaps each team even employs moles to work within rival teams subject to high amounts of pay to never speak. Imagining a Merc mole getting tortured by Helmut in a room now.... ;)

In 1998, Ferrari used the on-board camera footage and, crucially, the microphones to reconstruct the exact engine operating conditions for their competitors over the course of a lap. They benchmarked it against the data from their own cars and could pretty accurately calculate engine power, gear ratios, shift points, corner speed, car weight etc etc all from that feed.

Remember this?

Red Bull boss Christian Horner hits out at rivals over F1 budget cap speculation

Christian Horner hit back at suggestions from rival teams that Red Bull have breached F1's budget cap; Horner hinted at the possibility of legal action in response to "fictitious claims"

Well.... to the surprise of no-one whatsoever...

Helmut Marko believes budget cap saga is not over: ‘Six teams above’ 2022 limit

Marko may be right, inflation and especially energy costs for business have been extreme, but part of me wonders if he thinks that because RB is either extremely close to or already exceeded the cap for a second year?

If Helmet Marko told me the sun would rise again tomorrow I’d check with another source first. You can’t believe anything that comes out of that man’s mouth.

Helmet Marko gets interviewed a lot on German TV and it's really weird how differently he comes across when he's interviewed in German and English. In German he comes across as blunt and straight talking with a wicked and dry sense of humour; in English he comes across as a absolute ****.

It's nothing new. Several teams were talking about it right from the start of the season and the cap already got increased by few %s iirc.

I have several German colleagues who would disagree lol. They just say he's a **** in any language.

Probably the latter, but more likely they're using the Trumpian PR plan again and trying to deflect any further comments on their own breach.

:p

The irony in that if several teams failed the cap and all got a fine and -10% wind tunnel time, then everyone is on level pegging anyway.

Or the other situation where they suddenly decide to go hard and slap, which will make the Red Bull punishment look like they were paid off.

Can't wait for the toxic online discussions when 6 teams break the cap next year, Red Bull aren't one of them and then the FIA go in hard and smash them all with 25% point deductions, monster fines etc. :p

If that happens, as long as the punishments are applied equally then I don't have a problem with it. I make no secret of the fact I don't like RB but the point is that everyone needs to be treated equally and the punishment should be appropriate.
