Motorsport Off Topic Thread

It’s only possible to compare with a team mate. In recent times Alonsos have been unproven.
Obviously the goat is impossible to define. All the really good drivers also had a team advantage at least we think so.
Agreed. No doubt Max, Alonso, Schumi, Hamilton, etc. are some of the best drivers F1 has ever seen, but no way you can call any of them the greatest - way too many external factors.

“Who is the best driver” is such pointless debate when it comes to F1.

For starters the talent pool for motorsport as a whole is so comically small that being the best driver doesn’t even mean that much relative to sports like football where the talent pool is many millions due to everyone being able to discover and pursue their talent should they be blessed with it.

Best f1 driver ever is ultimately the best of a few hundred rich kids and nepo babies. If motorsport was accessible to the masses most of if not the entire current grid would prob be out of a job. There is a reason rich people don't dominate major sports, its because they are a tiny demographic relative to the middle and working classes.

Even Verstappen has said that sim racing is more competitive than real racing because more people can afford it and thus the talent pool is much larger.

Putting all that aside there are far too many variables at play in the sport for anyone to make any kind of definitive statement as to who the GOAT is. Different machinery, different eras, different levels of competition etc

That said i always chuckle when some trendy turns up in the conversation and with great confidence says 'fangio' or 'jim clark' as if they actually ever saw them race and formed their own opinion on them. It's also amusing because the talent pool for motorsport back then was vastly weaker and less competitive than it is nowadays (and it's still awful today !). I'll always have great respect for their bravery and balls but its highly unlikely that the best driver ever came from such a grossly uncompetitive period in F1's history where it was full of hobbyists and rich middle aged men on their jollies.

Except Hamilton is neither

I agree with the sentiment though. For most people the goat/best ever is synonymous with the “most successful”. Which means the most championships won, which is Hamilton.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t though. Or is this where someone picks out a no name driver from days gone by that won a race on 3 wheels whilst stopping for a bacon sandwich and a fag break halfway through before racing with one eye closed and no helmet because “that was the golden era”… lol

Because other drivers could have won the same number of championships in the same cars, as would be the case with any WDC. The car and team make up 90% of the drivers success.

Also, Schumacher has 7 so you're just fan girling now :)

That's a stupid argument. It's like saying Swindon could have won the Premier League 10 times if only they had players from Man Utd. You go down the road of "what ifs" and never come out again.

I am of course, but seen as the only thing stopping Hamilton from his eight was "human error" I'm sure most would count that as putting him at least (*for Max fans) ever-so-slightly above Schumi, if not totally above with the eighth included.

EDIT: Or just as @Eddie99 said, lol.

Right but he's one driver in the history of the sport, there are a few others as well but they are massively outnumbered by the wealthy. Motorsport is the sport of the rich.

I've said it numerous times but F1 should have entire fields of Verstappen and Hamilton level talent, the reason it doesn't is because motorsport at all levels is so expensive resulting in a tiny talent pool. This limited pool from which to pick drivers is the reason there are sizeable skill gaps between many of the drivers in F1.

It's not really anyone's fault either, it's just an unfortunate and seemingly unavoidable side effect of motorsport being so expensive.

Just like HAMs 2008 championship ;)

The football reference is completely wrong; you really are missing the point around how the car and team strategy play a primary role in winning a WDC.

Driving the fastest car on the grid fast doesn’t make you the greatest driver of all time. Now that HAM doesn’t start on pole every race, he’s moved on to demolition derby.

That said. Hamilton didn't come from a rich family by the way. That is what makes his journey to f1 unique

Demolition Derby? Now I know I can't take you seriously anymore!

Who has Hamilton crashed into in the last 20 odd months since new reg?

But they were hardly destitute either. Stories of him running brand new tyres every race in karting when most others would have to make the tyres last two or three weekends and other similar stories are commonplace.
