Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

I've got a few caravans making me some cash, small army of approx 80 and enjoying it so far. How will I know it's time to take a castle ? and what will I need ? cheers

The main quest I think help kicks along you making your own kingdom. It's time when you feel like it though, or you feel ready.

Personally, I usually like to be extremely prepared, and would probably make a full army of each of my companions, and a full army of my own. Except perhaps an engineering companion who I'd keep with me. Then build up the garrison like crazy, since it acts like a useful well for you to dip into if your own army get's wiped.

Trying to buy peace quickly from the faction you just attacked is probably not a bad idea either.

So to be clear, a vassal is just a companion that you split off and give his own party?

Yes. They pretty much run on auto pilot so you can't really affect what they get up to. You can make them Governors of your fiefs (castles).

Family Feud: You can kick the useless one out by talking to them.

Ok cool, thanks. I started a new game now with the BETA update, again with Empire... lets see what happens. :)

I know it's early access but the game crashes a fair bit, graphical glitches like half the screen going black is really annoying as well, especially when you're on the last stage of the arena :(

I'm 65hrs in and the only crash I had was due to an updated mod, reverted to previous version and it was fine. Had a few missing ground and hit animation (only on first hit) textures but nothing game breaking.

I seem to have hit a bit of a grind, in trying to form a new kingdom. Getting to clan tier 3.

I’m doing battles with bandits, quests and the arena. Is it supposed to be this much of a grind, am I missing something?

One thing this game needs is dismemberment ala Mordhau, it would be awesome.

There's a dismemberment mod I believe, at least decapitation.

If I hit a bit of a grind, I try and vary things up a bit. Was hitting that stage, decided to get myself a wife, Managed that, she fell pregnant 20 seconds later, whilst travelling in my party, so now I'm going to try and finish up the banner quest in a hurry, and whilst doing that, chase down bandits to get more renown and improve my army.

Hoping to hit level 3 in time (may attack a few of the minor faction lords, since that doesn't have serious consequence), then take a castle and try and hold out!

Okay, update, now own 3 caravans and one workshop, the money is piling in with approx take home of 3k ish per day! 11 hours game play so far, superb game really fun, bit grindy at times and I look forward to a more solid main quest line.

I haven't done much with my army just focused on making money at this point, it's rolling in. I am currently a mercenary for the North, what is the next step here? Should I now build up a huge army.

Is anyone playing with all damage settings (to yourself, enemy and troops etc) on "Realistic" mode? Is it a big jump in difficulty of battles? I am considering restarting again on this setting to add to tension. :)

I play with full damage and combat ai set to the hardest. You worry about getting armour sooner and you can't be this huge warrior turning the tide against massive odds just by yourself, but it's a more tactical affair. You try to look for key interventions.

Against bandits etc i try and ride behind them to draw away a chunk of them, meaning my forces can more safely deal with the others first etc. In big battles i try and take out high priority targets etc.

Ok that's good to hear. Sounds like the AI may need a little improvement though if you can draw a big chunk away like that just by yourself... does it give you a big advantage?

Join a faction of your choice, wait for the notification that appears on the right-side of the screen saying "X has formed an army". Head over to said army, and speak to the lord and join the army. I recommend saving the game at this point :)
You can get up to 50 renown per battle if the army clashes with another.

I can't remember how much renown I got but it certainly accelerated everything when you start joining armies to fight. It's not just renown that's important, but also influence, as that lets you raise armies and when you raise your own armies to take castles then that REALLY gives you a badass reputation with NPC's. A good effect of owning a castle when I was finally assigned one (the third one I conquered, I think) was that I got 4 influence per day so really racked up my ability to vote. :)

Only really works with bandits, who don't have a commander as such. Against AI armies, they're more disciplined, though equally that offers the opportunity to get in behind them and pepper with arrows, even strafe with melee. Depends on if the army has a hold order, or an advance one. It seems if they are advancing, they'll target you if you get too close.

Staying mobile and keeping an eye on the battlefield, ordering your troops etc, seems often the smarter move.

I see. And yeah it's really amazing how much the battles feel like battles and all things considered the AI is not half bad and causes some hilarious moments. I love the fact that I can either take control (which I suck at and really need to spend time learning) or delegate to my "sergeant" AI and watch things unfold with reasonable confidence. The only thing that confuses me a little is that during sieges when the battering ram breaks down the outer door, only a small group of soldiers move forward to break the inner door and all the rest stream out to the walls. It needs to be fixed so that they all queue to break down the door then pour in to the waiting defender shield wall.

I think they know that's an issue. Fairly sure I've read siege AI on the known issues list etc
Maybe so, I haven't yet checked it in detail. I think by 2021 when its released it should be pretty damn amazing especially with all of this player feedback and dev communication.

It puts for example Creative Assembly to shame.

Just wait until the modders get to work. Star Wars, LOTR, GOT, general mass improvements etc etc.
