Mountain Biking

Was that in response to me mate? What length steerer do you know? Is that BIRD's 35mm stem?

Basically I've got a chance of some 2 month old 2016 DP Pikes that will go on the Aeris, but the steerer is short at 180mm so trying to find out what kind of length people are running.

IIRC I cut it to 185 or maybe 190. I'll check how many spacers I've got on mine, the headtube length is 120mm though, so 180 should be enough?

How many spacers do you currently run, and what height is your headtube.

No, I went with the Raceface stem.

Have you bought an Aeris yet?

Air won't help them if they're leaking. The oil seals will most likely need to be replaced and will keep weeping oil with use.

ps : Footpump ? You need a high pressure pump for forks / shocks (ps: dont call your fork a shock)

You could probably do it with a tyre pump. Looking at the rockshox guide, most of their air forks use around 150-170 psi for riders up to 99kg.
I have tyres rated higher than that and a track pump that will easily put 170psi in a tyre. It wouldn't do the small adjustments as accurately as my shock pump though.

And just because you can doesn't mean you should!

Off topic i know but just curious. What tyres do you have rated more than 170psi?!?!?

Artic tyres only go to 135ish and hold 44 ton!

Cheers Begbie :) I'm thinking / hoping 180mm should be ok. I've got 30mm of spacers plus the stem height (~another 30) on the Shan...

Not yet. Havent had chance to give Bird a ring to query sizing. Your's felt awful long and so did Knifey's Slash 9 when I tried it the other day... I think that may just be the general feel of 650b bikes/wheels which I will hopefully get used to!

Tubular tyres on my road bike. The sidewalls are stitched together so the tyre carcass completely surrounds the tube inside (which isnt replaceable). They need to be glued onto the rims because there is no bead like a clincher tyre. I think the max is 200psi but my pump wont do that.

Not entirely relevant to this thread but I was just making the point that some tyre pumps do go up to quite high pressures for these types of tyre.

Not entirely relevant to the thread either, but roady tyres scare the sh!t out of me. Inflated one inside a small flat when I was still living / cycle commuting in London and the bloody thing exploded. I was deaf for days.

Just totally different geo to your hardtail, I think you'd get used to it quickly. Saying that I've been on mine once since BPW!! :(

Stack height of the atlas stem is 40mm, headtube length of the Aeris is 120mm. That gives you 20mm spare.

Think most 35mm stems are 35mm diameter so you'd need new bars too. So if there a bargain, you should be ok. Plus if you need new bars, you could just get a massive upsweep.

You're about 6ft aren't you Rhys?
Definitely large, just get the shortest stem you can find, you'll get used it it quickly.

Yeah more or less :) Hate having long legs :( Means my seat has to go up stupidly high!!!

Ok cheers mate :) Was looking at the RF stems but will be 31.8mm for the renthal carbon bars.

Edit: just seen you're last post above, thanks. And damn.. I was hoping for a 35mm length stem with a 31.8mm clamp diameter for the renthal bars... bugger.

Anyone have first hand experience with 10 speed chain on 11 speed cassette? I want to go xt 11 speed but i got a nearly new gold kmc chain i dont wanna waste

I am pretty much an amatuer when it comes to biking, but I thought the theory was that a 10spd chain will be wider than an 11spd chain. Therefore will not fit the cassette properly. I do know that you can run 10spd chains on 9spd cassettes.

Hi guys. Need advice and guidance really. I have a 26" Specialized Rockhopper upgraded with 2x9 XT full groupset which has been solid for the past 2 years. Most of my biking has been XC in the local woods using firetrails and a bit of singletrack, plus also plenty of biking on flat tarmac with mixed firetrails. Most of my firends have bought 29ers had i must say that they have clear advantage when it comes to eating up track more efficiently compared to me, however not as nimble. Recently I got to taste my first time around Sherwood red route and my bike held out brilliantly, but I still felt a little behind due to wheel size.

I have decided that I want an upgrade and spend time going out to places like Cannock, Camber Sands, and Sherwood more frequently. However I still want a bike that will eat up the flats well too. I am debating whether to stay HT or Full Suss, 29er or 27.5?

The most I am prepared to pay is £1300, so do I go on eBay and find a second hand bargain to maybe get a carbon, or do I just buy new in a sale?

Chaps, I have a slight problem. I went to change my front tyre last night, I unlocked the front Maxle to remove the wheel and it was seized tight. It unlocks but I'm unable to rotate to remove the axle. I probably haven't had the wheel off since I got the bike 3 years ago and put the tyres on it.

Any ideas on freeing it up? The fork/axle in question is a 2011 RockShox Domain R.

Tyres for what purpose?

Downhill ya got maxxis minions, schwalbe magic marys
All mountain/endurorororo scwalbe nobby nic, hans damf, maxis high roller 2's
Trail maxxis high roller xc, scwalbe racing ralph

Loads more but if its for a a it of everything then either high roller 2's or hans dampf

Ended up going for a mountain king black chilli protect for the rear and a trail king black chilli protect for the front. At £52 all in it's well worth a punt, if they feel unsuitable my brother will take them off me.

It's probably siezed up inside the hub where the axle meets the hub at certain locations (bearings being one). Had this happen to my VAN 36's after being left a while.

You could try some GT85/WD40 and some good old fashoined brute force. EDIT: With mine I had to press the opposite leg towards the hub to force the axle whist it is unscrewing from the leg, to push through the hub and the rusted areas.

Then learn from this and regularly clean the bike and keep the axle thinly (very) with grease :)
