Mountain Biking

Interesting.

Did a BPW uplift last Sunday and my hands and lower arms were crippled for days. Returning to normality now.

I do sometime feel like im gripping too tight and i had a play moving my break leavers and posture so i did not feel like i was supporting my heft on the bars but it was really painful.

Any tips as i guess this is a technique/skill thing that you guys think might help?

I don't get this normally just when i do downhill stuff only like BPW.

i have exactly the same problem - I only notice it at BPW though
tried moving brakes etc but its just what happens when you deathgrip all day!

I never used to get this tho.

Maybe its because im fatter. I feel like i need to grip harder and have less control of the back end.

An uplift day at BPW destroyed me too. I put it down to the uplift allowing you to do far more hard riding than normally you would do in a day if you had to actually ride up the hill :p

First time i hit bike park wales my forearms died too from mega arm pump. I bought fatter softer grips and it helped a little but the biggest improvement was lossening the death grip! Gripping the bar too tight was my problem, as soon as i loosened up it was heaven, no more pump.

I found the same after a long day at BPW, given that I want to pack as much in as possible, thanks to the 6 hour drive home. :(

Avoiding doing 'rim dinger' more than once helped big time, but my forearms were still knackered, I'm sure it's mostly due to doing 5 or 6 times more descending than you would on a normal ride day mostly.

That said - how many of you have big hands, or at least, long fingers? I always used to get sore hands from riding, until I fitted the Superstar Excel larger diameter grips.... and magic! All the pain of gripping too thin an object for too long was gone. :) They're seriously well worth a try, and aren't even that pricy - Strange that there's so many grip options out there, and so few that are 'oversized'.

Relatively large but not giant hands here. Might have to look into different grips as an option. Will hold fire on buying anything for now until I've done another similar uplift day as I think I could easily attribute it to just over doing it as my first real uplift!

It's a bloody shame they dont do oversized normal length (135 or whatever it is) grips. The superstar excel ones are great wdith wise, just to damn long.

I got above average hands so got some superstar excels and they defo help. Want to try some renthal non lock on grips. There supposed to be a lot better at absorbing vibrations due to no plastic collar inside the grip, but will need wire to keep them still on the bar.

Whats peoples thought on 27.5+ Bikes, I'm seriously considering buying a Marin Pine Mountain 1 for £750.

The Charge cooker caught my eye too, but it doesn't look as good and the Marin seems better value. Are there any other bikes or frames available in this kind of price range yet?

They can be cut down.

If I was artistic, I'd be able to draw something up to explain... but essentially you just need to cut the plastic down further so you've still got the sticky-out collar bits for the ends, and cut away rubber and plastic.

I've done it for every set I've owned, because at standard they're stupidly far too wide.

Any recommendations for a light xc orientated bike for a mate?
Nothing offroady but should be capable of fireroad and a little bit more gnarlier than that.

Cheap too :(
