Mountain Biking

Ive got a hr2 super tacky dh casing up front and the thing grips forever but doesnt half drag! Probably weighs as much as a front wheel too. Might stick a minion up front. The hr2 exo is spot on at back, bit drifty at times but dont mind at back too much. Forest of dean in 3 weeks time whoop whoop

I must be of the minority that is completely underwhelmed by the performance of HR2, whilst reasonable rolling resistance, just seem to lack this grip that everyone seems to talk of, i've tryed pretty much every compound they are available in, the cheap harder compound versions that came fitted to my last bike were near lethal in some situations, and even the supertacky DH ones leave much to be desired, the HR2 in general do not inspire confidence for me at all.
I got along with minions, but i've been convertad to the dark side, i've been completely won over by Magic marys, even in trailstar compound are miles better than any maxxis offering i've tryed (i'm yet to try the Shorty).

When i had HR2 i found the grip awesome, not so good rolling though. On Minions DHF now and the grip seems as good and they roll faster so happy days for me.

patience, oh and rubber gloves if you are using DOT fluid(nasty stuff), keep those discs and pads well away until you are finished the bleed, use something else to keep the pistons in place, last thing you need is to contaminate your pads/discs(been there and done that, learnt the hard way.

Also don't forget to repressurise it at the lever (and caliper) when you're done bleeding. I did that and they worked great for a few pulls. Then didn't work at all. Oops.

What do people do with waste DOT fluid? I have some in a bottle that's handily labelled as orange squash.

3M 8671HS Helicopter Tape, not the cheapest stuff, but you pay for quality, its just clear tough adhesive tape, takes some serious abuse, dosnt peel, dosnt turn opaque/yellow over time, I usually have my frames taped up in all the usual vurnable spots like down tube, and areas susceptible to rub.if you get a roll/large section you can cut to fit your needs, or if you are lucky some companies sell kits to suit your frame, http://www.invisiframe.co.uk/ for example.

Seems reasonable. Thanks:)

Took the GeoMetricTon for a blast around Afan to have a look at WGES Round 4 stages yesterday, had a some good fun considering I have man flu! More I ride the bike the harder it is to find fault with it!

Tried bleeding my avid elixir trail brake no less than 5 times earlier as the lever just feels cack. Every time the end product is where the lever is nearly touching the bar at biting point. I'm hoping its just the bleed kit is letting air in the system so ordered a new kit and will try again next weekend (o joy). Have had the kit about 2 years and done at least 10 successful bleeds with it. Maybe the lovely dot 5.1 juice has finally killed the syringes/hoses on the old kit.

Elixers are well known for being a nightmare to get all the air out of the system, you need a lot of patience with them, everytime i bled Avids it took 3 or 4 trys to get it sweet.
I ******* despise Avid brakes after my time with them(elixers and codes), nothing but trouble, when they worked they worked quite well, but such a temperamental brakes.

I've recently become quite a shimano convert, work and feel almost as good as Hopes, but a hell of a lot cheaper, and SOOO easy to bleed.
replaced a lever yesterday, took all of 15min.

I took delivery of the rest of the parts for my bike yesterday
Was planning on getting Hope pro4 DH wheelset, but after having to replace full face after crash I had to opt for cheaper Spank Spoon 32 wheelset, also replaced the saddle that was falling apart and the old deore lever with a nice shiny XT lever to match the other one.
last but not least replaced the main pivot bearings, with some tougher Enduro Max compliment bearings, as the originals were dead, one of the bearings literally fell apart when i removed the swing arm:eek:

Bike feeling so solid and smooth now!

I've heard everyone moan about Elixirs, but I've never really had much trouble to be fair. Mine are comming on to 3 years old and have bled nicely every time. I think its the bleed kit to blame, its a cheap epic bleed one which is also old and hammered, even when de-gasing the fluid it wasnt 100%. should have just bought an avid pro kit from chain reaction for £35, instead i gone and ordered another epic :-(.

I think I will invest in some XT's at some point, 3 year old disc brakes are always gonna be trouble and need more than a bleed.

Edit: The Gamble and GeoMegatron looking sweet
