Mountain Biking

Got a set on my build, what's up?
Sorry I should have said, just been looking at them as a potential purchase. Hunt Enduro Wide and Dt Swiss also stand out.

Just wondered if they were any good really. Can be had for about £340 a set which seems good.

I always go hope wheels - great hubs and every time a wheel standard changes they bring out adaptors :D

mate has hunts and he cracked a rim, had to wait ages (months) for a replacement one but they did lend him a wheel in the meantime

DT Swiss are built and made in the US (by DT swiss), most of the rest are the same rim outsourced. I've seen hunts badly dinged in a matter of weeks. (to the point of not holding air). Not that it should put anyone off, but if you can afford it, nearly always go DT swiss for rims IMO.

Same love Hope Hubs, wish they'd being a rachet style one out though for silence. But the ability to always get spares is worth it's weight in gold, love the ease of maintenance as well.

Anyone got experience of using Nukeproof Horizon V2 wheelsets?

Not tried the V2 wheelset but I had have the V1 Horizon wheelset prior to my current wheels. After my first ride on them (was at Antur Stiniog so very rocky tbf) the rear was quite badly dented but still held air and didn't affect performance. Hubs are made by Novatec, rear had quick engagement but gave me no issues. Front hub was fine but had an annoying squeaking when turning slowly, pretty sure it was just the seal on the endcaps but no matter how I tried to lube or grease it it would always come back mid ride!.

Hunt wheels looks pretty good for the cash, pretty sure they use Novatec hubs also, which look very similar to the hubs used by Nukeproof. The updated Hunt wheels are supposedly stronger and more dent resistant than the previous versions.

Couple of pictures from Descend last weekend. More can be seen here https://www.pinkbike.com/u/spudmaster/album/Riding/ if your interested.

Suffered the dinging on some road wheels on my hunts so would always look elsewhere. Luckily mine are still usable.

How did you find hamsterley mate? Should do the red & black loop with us some day.

We just got back from a very very wet Gwydyr Forest, Betwys-y-coed. First trip to Wales, brutal climbs and fire road galore but not toooooo bad. Well worth the down in my opinion. Rockier than Gisburn, more fun than Gisburn I think. Last few descents are insane and some great views. Kind of an XC route but gnarly and testing your grip.

Going to be making more trips to Wales I think :)

Hamsterley was good, well Descend Bike Park anyway. Didn't leave the bike park as we'd paid for uplift. Descend is good, fast and flowy top half and steep and technical bottom half with lots of different track options. Unfortunately for me I crashed on my third run and jabbed my bars in my ribs. You can see the hole it made in my jersey on some of the other pictures on Pinkbike :p Had to cut my riding short cos the pain started to get too much. The tracks at Descend were good but they are very short compared to places like Antur Stiniog, Revs and Dyfi. Saw other places to ride in Hamsterley from the uplift route which looked to have potential.

Watched some vids of Antur Stiniog. Looks legit bonkers.

Think we'll build up to that, thinking of either Penmancho, Coed-y-Brenin or Betwys-y-coed next. Penmancho looks far too wet tho.

Hamsterley has a pretty big loop if you do red and black, super fun but if you're after Descend level stuff it's probs gonna be boring for you. Tonnes of offpiste too, worth a visit anyway.

Just get booked in, the uplifts build your confidence/skill so quickly. I have REVs booked in 3 times this month :D

Penmachno is ace, one of my top 3 places. Like Gisburn a lot more natural feel IMO.

Yeah, Gwydir was rough on the arms, but felt like "proper" mountain biking at the same time. Real, rugged, rough pick your lines carefully kinda vibe. Absolutely loved it, we're hooked on the terrain at Wales!

Quick lil vid of my mate going OTB at Gwydir this weekend lol. He's alright! Wrong line, too fast, over he goes into a bush: TomTom OTB Flip!

Awesome photos them!

Thanks. Though either my friends or I can take any credit for them. There was professional photographers at Descend. I got 19 photos of myself in total for £12.50. Pretty good deal I thought.

least favourite place I have ever ridden :D

was crazy windy / rainy when I went and all that slate is rough AF on your wrists lol

With newer bike parks opening up in recent years like Dyfi, it does seem like Stiniog has become less popular but I have to say its probably my favourite still. Good selection of tracks that hold up well in all weather conditions with a fast and efficient uplift. Just be sure to be running good tyres with strong sidewalls as the slate won't have mercy.

lol, yeah about good tyres. only been to Stiniog once, had brand new high roller 2 tyres and on the 2nd run I managed to rip off a nub/cube/block (whatever it's called) off a tyre. Sealant spraying everywhere, tipping down with rain, wet hands trying to remove a tight wet tyre to add a tube... memories...

Gwydyr Mawr is the renamed Marin Trail, it's had a fair bit of work over the last few years. Well worth a saturday night stopover in Betws-Y-Coed at one of the cheap hotels/hostels and doing Gwydyr and Penmachno with a few beers/meal overnight.

There's a campsite 5 minutes away in the car, £10/night. :)

We usually stay in the Glan Aber Hotel for £19 a night (used to be £10...) per person in the bunkhouse, or Plas-Y-Brenin down the road for about £50 a room i think.
