It isn't so much the head angle but the height compared to the seat. Raising the height should hopefully provide a slightly more relaxed seating position.

theres only so many spacers worth putting under the stem.. sounds more like a frame sizing issue?

Surely it depends how many spacers he can fit on his current forks?

If he can't fit any spacers, a new fork and maybe 3-5cm of spacers will make a big difference and is still perfectly fine. Most people will have at least a few cm of spacers under the stem.

im which case maybe a stem with a rise on it would help. and probably cheaper than forks too.

You dont actually need a map for either of them if you plot your route beforehand. You can follow the line you've set quite easily.

The etrex can display a map too, which makes it a bit easier if you want to go off exploring without a preset route to follow. I've used OS maps and OpenStreetMaps. OS is a lot better but expensive (). OSM doesnt have as much detail of the contours and other features but usually has all the paths marked on it so it would probably do the job fine.

So can I load them with OSM, they don't need Garmin maps? Easy enough to pre-load gps files onto them? From GPSIES or the like?

I presume they also track my ride, and I can later upload these to strava?

Looking about it seems it's easy enough to load any maps I want on it, and strava supports the Edge 500. May bite the bullet on the 500.

No, sorry when I said the etrex can display a map "too", I meant as well as the route line, not as well as the edge500.
The 500 cant display maps, just a line to follow. You need to go for an edge 800 if you want a map on an edge series device.

I'm pretty sure that any garmin mapping device will take the OSM maps, but I only have the etrex so I cant be sure.

Right I get you, so the etrex can have maps loaded onto it and the edge 500 can't...

So the only advantage to the Edge 500 is the ability to upload to Strava really. The 500 will though still have a route to follow, just the image surrounding it will be blank rather than a map?

Seems a bit strange really that, when both products are prices similar. So it seems there is an Edge Touring...now just need to see if I can load maps for Cyprus on it..

This is the view you get on the edge500:

The edge500 and eTrex20 are similar prices but very different things.
The edge is more of a training aid for cyclists. It'll connect to wireless heart rate monitors, power meters, cadence sensors and speed sensors. It gives you a lot of info about speed, average speed, distance, etc.
The eTrex is more aimed at hikers. It can tell you distance and average speed, but it's main focus is navigation. It's much harder to use the buttons whilst cycling and doesnt come with a bike mount like an edge.

These are just the devices I have. There are a lot more options to choose from.
The Edge800 is pretty much the best of both worlds: it's easy to use on a bike and has all the cycling related data that you need but also has maps+navigation.

OK, well, not entirely manly ... but current and future build plans on the reign

"Enduro" build

Got some new stickers coming to go all matching, will be peeling the shock's sticker off to go back to the stock one beneath it

Above is with Grid casing tyres, but for full on DH days, I have a cheaper / heavier wheels with full dual ply tyres and a coil shock to go on with it... let's call it the Park bike build...watch this space

THEN, just for poops n giggles, I also have another configuration that might raise a smile or two , again... watch this space

New wheels and cranks on. Was going to enter my first enduro race this weekend but I've had something come up and can't go now. Would have been an amazing weekend too.
