Mr Olympia 2006

Exactly. These guys don't do this for a recreational activity, there are huge rewards for being the best and I'm not just talking about the huge cash prize. There have only been 11 winners since the competitions birth in 1965 and one of those winners went on to become one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood and finally the governer of California. As the yanks say 'Go figure'.

As far as bodybuilding goes, Mr Olympia is like what the world cup is to football. The Mr Olympia winner is arguably the most muscularly defined person on the planet. It takes determination, blood, guts, unreal genes and great sportsmanship to get that far. Hell, one of the reasons why I follow mr.o is to see who is the best in the world and secondly, the intense rivalry between Cutler and Coleman. It's like supporting England, its an emotion rollercoaster.

Unfortunately it hasnt broken into the mainstream as a bonefide sport probably due to a number of factors which include steroid use, politics and it's image.

The idea that people think that the top BB's look freaky is strange for me to comprehend, it's like saying Ronaldinho's football is too technical. These guys have insane muscularity which I can only admire. After all, it takes an extra-ordinary person to become a world champion of anything.

Well said sir

I think it helps to know a bit about BB in general to appreciate men like these; sure they are sometimes unsightly but the amount of motivation, dedication and aspiration it takes to get where they are (with or without juice) puts most other 'sportsmen' to shame. :)

The title going to Jay was also a sign, next year its a free for all, anyones game basically because I think they are going to streamline the physiques. Bring down the size a little bit as it was getting out of hand. Phil Heath is being groomed at the next Mr Olympia, either him or Victor Martinez. Phil Heath beat some mass monsters in his pro debut, he is undefeated and should most likely claim the Mr Olympia crown to bring us back to a more complete physique.

Cant wait to see what happens next year.

The technicality of Ronaldinhos football is natural, we all know the size of these boby builders is not natural, it is enhanced, enduced.

Hats off to these guys, they undoubtedly train very hard. But if you want to be that size surely you want to compete because it just doesnt seem practical for everyday life and while many dont do it for this reason, i believe a lot do it for attention that they find hard to recieve otherwise through natural charisma and the likes.

Steroid Junkies? your making it out that steroid use is as bad as heroine use. Nothing wrong with steroids at all, do what you can to win, its not cheating because steroids are not magic beans.

Frank Zane was geared up as well, so why do you look at him for inspiration when you have no respect for "Steroid Junkies"?

Well done to jay Cutler though, I havnt looked at the pics yet but he must have been in awsome condition to beat coleman. I wonder if this is the start of a new era?

Also why are people even commenting on this thread when they either dont like bodybuilding or think these guys are disgusting?

Pumping their bodies full of drugs (for non medical reasons) makes them junkies as far as i'm concerned, and no, i don't respect them.

I don't know if Zane used steroids but he certainly didn't look like the monsters you see today:

Fair play to these guys, but I got a lot more respect for those guys on World`s strongest man type comps, you know the ones with the Atlas stones and the likes.

Obviously I do weights, so i can respect that aspect of what they do but I think many of the practices are destructive - their bodies are exaggerated and they are weak at competition. Many of the practices they partake in can cause health problems.

I quite agree with this. Many sports come with the risk of injury, but I don't think much of this sport where you are basically required to sacrifice your health to succeed.
I admire the physiques they have, but I don't approve of what they have to do to get them.

Yes he does look great. I would rather look like this than the likes of Cutler and Coleman.

Apparently in the next Mr O. they will possibly be trying to tone down the size. Read this on a BB forum not sure if it's correct.

but you need good genes to become as well defined as that.

are you sure, you got any basis for that?

as an open forum, i like to keep fit i exercise regularly through running, cycling and soon swimming i want to compete in triathlons, however they look grotesque!

Yes. Genes are a HUGE factor. Just like with becoming good at anything, you need something good to start on. I remember watching a Cutler DVD and he mentioned that the first time he got on the bench press he pressed 130KG+.

Genetics play an important part, some people can gain muscle a lot quicker than others doing the same routine while keeping a low bf%, others cannot. What is the difference when the routine is the same? The makeup (or chemistry) of the body or genetics if you will. There are 3 different types of body type, Endomorph, Mesomorph and Ectomorph.

There is no way these guys could get that big on steroids alone. Their bodies ability to gain mass is incredible. Of course, there will be exceptions to the rule.

Here's another good article:

Well Done Jay!

I can't say that I like the way they look in competition, far too big IMO. The training they have to do is insane as are the sacrafices that they have to make. I do respect them for how they manage to keep going through the undoubted pain and suffering that they put themselves through.

Personally I think this guy looks better than any of today's monsters. Excellent proportion, its a very attractive body

The mass monsters have awsome proportion to, its just the b igger guys muscles are far larger. He is geared up, he was competing the same time as arnold, when steroid use was "legal" so to them it was like a supplement, so he most deffinetly used, but so what.

I can appreciate all sizes in bodybuilding, im not just a mass monster fan.

Zane did use drugs aswell as everyone at that time. We've made advancements in the past 30 years, the size game became more and more visible throughout the 90s. The last few years of bodybuilding have been dominated by size but that will slowly change. I'm not a fan of ronnie coleman as he looks now. His 98 physique was the best, the same with Jay Cutler, his 2001 physique was his best. They added 20-30 lbs and lost the aesthetics they once had.

This is Phil Heath. You may not believe but he is only 215lbs compared to the monsters that weigh 270lbs. This guy is the talk of the town and will surely be the next mr olympia. He is like the flex wheeler of tomorrow.
