MSI: *Offical* N460GTX Hawk 1GB OC Edition thread

Having a devil of a time getting Afterburner to work correctly. Running Kombustor the clocks drop everytime I open Afterburner whether it be at default or overclocked. I am using Nvidia Inspector to clock with in the meantime. This run with the gpu cooled by a Boreas TEC...

I dont usually post on this type of thing (not really an overclocker) but that post deserves some kudos and respect for using a clamp in such a creative manner :)

This must be MSI's new cooler in testing!

The MSI-460-SuperHardcoreClampNuclearReactor Edition.

Got mine this morning and must say I'm quite pleased with it thus far. Temps and noise are much reduced compared to my GTX280. Mine came with Assassins Creed II (Ubisoft DRM infested junk), but I won't hold that against MSI :p

Damn lucky, I got a trial code for starcrapft 2 something I would never ever play nor buy. I would have at least played AC2 again (completed it on 360)

Did I read right that this card came with extension leads that plugged into the rear of the card for multimeters? Also, anyone know if MSI is going to update their soft to include clear and accurate readings for volts and so forth?

Not that I am aware of but there are test points on the card if one must know the exact readings. I really don't see MSI going to the trouble, but one never knows.

Ordered Mine yesterday should be here today hopefully ready for a stress test the weekend :D
Not ordered from ocuk since they switched over to DPD am i wasting my time waiting in today like the old DHL service :D ?

Well did it come yet or are you still waiting??? I am not a fan of DPD also, had problems in the pass too, but it was from a different supplier, i wonder if DPD is just like royal mail but in sheep clothing, because i get the same problem with Royal mail unless it is special delivery

Yes it arrived yesturday afternoon, just when I'd given up hope it came :D

Thought It was a dead on arrival card, the box looked like it had been kicked around the back of the van/ocuk warehouse. Every corner of the box is a bit battered, even the instruction inside the box look like they have seen better days. Not sure if I have been sent a returned card or not?

Was about to return the card but thought while I have it here I'd give it a quick go, Installed it last night and I have to say what a bloody great card from MSI, in the flesh it looks very sexy the cooler is silent(which is what I was after) The overall quality of the GPU does look and feel second to none.

Temps well its idling at 27 degree's as we speak now, quick game of BC2, left for dead 1 and f12010 last night it didn't go past the very low 60's the fan was silent up to that point.

I'm very impressed with its price vs quality and performance.
Bc2 everything on highest setting dx 11 @ 1920x1200 near perfect fps
I can really see now why it the extra 15 quid over the standard gtx 460's but boy is it worth it.

Ok , got my Hawk a couple of days ago and its just squeezes in my case , phew

Problem is im having major problems with MSI Afterburner , When ever i make adjustments to the overclock the program freezes and i have to hard reset , ive tried the various fixes on google but none seem to work

Does anyone know if theres another program i can use for overclocking nvidia cards

Cheers

Hi.. unluckily... if you read my earlier posts, you will see that you can't use software to read the voltages on this card. The voltage regulators of the HAWK don't support it. The only way is via the V-check points on the PCB. And you can't compare these to the readings that other people get off their other 460's. It's like trying to compare apples to Pears.

So the answer to your question ... is that AfterBurner will not be any time soon (or ever from how I understand it) be modded to show voltage readouts for this card (unluckily). This is why the voltage adjustment in AfterBurner is shown as an offset, rather than an absolute voltage.

Have a read of my earlier posts for more info if interested (post #49 onwards). I spent absolute ages posting on numerous forums (including the MSI user forum) and speaking direct to a couple of folks that actually wrote reviews of this card and they confirm this.

Quite happy to be proved wrong though.

PS. Don't be fooled that GPUz and Nvidia Inspector "appear" to show a voltage readout. These must just be some sort of defaults they display. As if you try increasing the voltage to the GPU, it is not reflected in the voltage displayed by this sort of software.

Interesting.

Now that a few more folks have these cards, I've done a bit more digging and uncovered the following thread on Guru3D forum.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=329252

Post no. #24. Now Unwinder (basically the guy who developed RiveTuner / AfterBurner) appears to be implying that there may be a "work around" for the voltage readout in AfterBurner at some point. Though I would suggest you don't hold your breath!

Post no. #33. Is basically backing up what I've been saying about other software that purports to read the voltage on these cards.

PS. On post no. #34. When COWIE (who managed to actually blow one of his cards up! used some hack to allow him to put mega volts through it I believe and fried it!) refers to a "dmm". He is referring to a Digital Multi Meter.
PPS. See my post #60 in this thread for a pretty picture of me using a dmm.

Trev - Find MSI Afterburner 2.00 Beta 7....that is the only version I found that worked correctly for me. The second option is Nvidia Inspector.

Ok cheers ill give it ago , im using 2.0 (non beta) atm

Driving my crazy tho  i want to push this card pass 900mhz at least

Does everyone else's fan max out in terms of RPM at around 82% in AfterBurner? Mine does.

To be totally clear, my RPM readings fluctuate between 4620/50/80 at 82% all the way up to 100% fan speed.

If I could post attachments I would send you the bios and the Afterburner. :(

Nivida Inspector is working a treat , really like this program , also managed to force V sync for metro 2033

so far ive OCed to 900mhz on the core and 1840 on the memory , i thought it was stable till i played metro for 15mins and then the driver crashed

Could the memory be causing this problem or is more likely to be the GPU core ? I really dont want to clock the core under 900mhz if pos , Ive upped the volts to the maximum option in NI and im still only hitting 64c under load

Thanks

Stupid I know but i didn't realise this card was Mini-HDMI. Because of the adaptor + Lead sticking out miles i can't push the case back as far as i need, so i bought a Mini-HDMI to HDMI V1.4 Cable and guess what the cable doesn't seem to work :(

Anybody know if the card is compatible with this V1.4 cable or have i bought a duff cable?

Btw i have no other Mini-HDMI devices to try it on. Why in gods name couldn't MSI just have put a regular HDMI port on like my Radeon HD 5870 Vapor-X has...

Ok , got my card stable but it dosnt clock as high as id like :(

In kombuster i can get 920mhz / 1840 Memory stable but in gaming the max i can get without driver crash is 880mhz / 1820 Memory with voltage adjusted

Oh well nevermind its still a pretty sweet card , My load is only about 60c and idle is 34c so its the coolest card ive ever had and theres not much air flow in my case

So all in all im pleased , shame i couldnt get higher not even close to 1000mhz but hey
