Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Yeah APM inside the CD spindle case

I am using bullet connectors for the power and motor connections on the ESCs, basically just lifted the wiring from my old quad onto the new one

Im hoping I can link from another forum, but this has to be one of the best pictures Ive seen yet from the Vision. Even though its a couple stitched together its beautiful!!

Hubsan X4 Quadcopter

Afternoon all, has anyone got any experience with these? Looking at getting one this week as I really want to get into quadcopters and this seems like the idea entry level thing.

The Q4 is cute, but I feel it's 'too' cute, with only being able to trim one axis and having a very basic controller, it's not what I want.

Got one sat on my desk, right next to me. I used to fly micro heli's and gave the x4 a try. Just one very big snag. The battery only lasts for 4mins. By the time you have got a grasp on the controls the battery is flat. I have a spare battery but its the same again. I think its faulty as it eats the batteries. Youtube videos suggest 6-7mins battery time. That would be great to get a feel for the needed input rates etc. my x4 is just an desk toy.

Its stable, easy to fly in stability mode not got to stunt mode yet but turning up the rates makes it twitchy and needs fast reactions. If you haven't flow a quad before then for £40 its worth a mess about with.

Now I want the Blaze 350qx, Quads I would say, go big and out doors size, small is frustrating imho. So small going outside to do stunts needs a very calm day. Small inside and you have a helicopter that looks cool but limited once you have the basics of what the controls do.

Good afternoon all!

My Hubsan X4 V2 has been delivered and is waiting for me at home (well, my neighbors).

I have never flow any RC stuff before, actually, that's a lie, I once had a basic entry powered glider that was basically foam wings and fuselage and a little prop. Lasted about 20 mins. A fart would blow it away...

Anyway, I have taken a REAL liking into quad's or anything of that nature, hence why I bought the Hubsan X4 for get me into that world.

Ideally, if I am not too shabby after a while. I really, REALLY love the look of FPV, whilst recording decent HD footage.

So maybe a setup with a FPV on and my Sony RX100 on the bottom recording the flight in a nice pretty HD pick.

In terms of FPV, what range realistically can a semi decent quad go up to (doesn't HAVE to be a quad), and what run time.

Say I had £800 - £1,000. Is that a decent figure to invest later down the line. Does it get that expensive?

Looks like it's the APM in the CD spindle case.

Nice one howler, looks a tidy build. Are you using 4mm HXT bullet connectors for the ESCs?

I think it is! I was berated/shamed for doing that lol!

It can easily get that expensive. And just as easily lost too!

You need to budget for.....

Phantom or

Frame kit/motors/esc's/props/batteries/flight controller/reciever and transmitter to get in the air.

That bit can be done for £200-£400

Then FPV camera/transmitter/goggles or monitor/antennas/gimbal/go-pro etc.

Possibly another 6-£700 for those bits too!

Not a cheap hobby.

I already have a Go Pro? lol.

Thanks mate, I will get the basics down and I will take it from there. Maybe building something that will be capable of FPV down the line will be better rather than going all in?

And surely it would be sensible to place a GPS tracker in the copter anyway?

Just seen this, looks like the CAA are starting to get more involved!

To be honest, you'd have to be a weapons grade idiot to overfly a nuclear base and hope to escape prosecution!
From what I'd read on another forum from the guy himself, he was flying and lost his control signal, the wing then flew on its own over the bridge, through the restricted airspace (not over the nuclear establishment itself) and into the estury. The thing is, though he was flying close to the restricted airspace, there is also a model flying club at about the same distance away.

I've seen his video of the incident and at least to me seems like he was telling the truth, it suddenly just started flying on a straight line and didn't change course from the time it was outside restricted airspace until it went into the estury.

The problem was he didn't get any legal representation before submitting his reply to the CAA, what he sent was unclear and even contradicted himself. Without being nasty to the guy it read like it was written by a child.

For what it's worth I think he was genuine, he lost control and wasn't really at fault. His problem was poor preparation and lack of knowledge.

Was it sensible flying near restricted airspace, probably not but that's not illegal. Was he silly not to get legal representation, absolutely, I think a good lawyer could have got him off. I guess the thing to take away from this, is whether you have control of your model or not you still have responsibility for what they do and where they go.

Here's the video...

As per my usual mode of operation, too quick to post and no research :)

Seems he was quite unlucky then but as you say, he could have mitigated things a little bit!

I wonder if the CAA will tighten up regs even further? I can't see how you can police it effectively though as so many people are buying into the tech recently. Educate and enforce on a minority and hope it feeds down to majority I guess.

I've never flown RC stuff before now or had much to do with it but I'm sure that planes/helicopters haven't caused so much of a ruckus in the past? Are most old school R/C pilots just a bit more responsible?

Don't be too hard on yourself ;) I wouldn't expect everyone to know about this :)
If you're interested pop over to FPV Hub forum and check out a thread called something like Me vs the CAA (can't remember the exact name) in the general discussion forum. Interesting if painful reading.

I don't have any experience of old school flying but it seems there are a lot of folks who pick up this hobby with no thought to safety. Videos by TBS/Trappy are cool and people understandably want to replicate them but they jump in feet first without the experience he has and make mistakes with their kit, practices and flying in general.

God the Vision Plus looks fantastic! I want one even more now! and £800 direct from DJI in Shenzhen, with two batteries!! Trouble is, I'm going to need to upgrade to a new phone - My S2 won't run the software. This year is going to be expensive!!
