Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Quick question guys, how do CAA regulations work with fully autonomous flight, e.g. pre-determined GPS waypoints or tracker devices where the pilot isn't in direct control?

Just hovered my 250 indoors with 5030 triblades... What a racket it makes but 1/3rd stick hover ain't to be sniffed at

Much more thrust with triblades then? I'm currently at a smidge over 50% hover with 510g AUW!

I got the 6030 props yesterday and my replacement arm. Well actually, replacement whole frame as I thought 3 more spare arms will probably come in useful!

They do fit, although clearance is tight. I'll post some pics tonight as the rebuild progresses. I had to strip it all down to replace the arm so I'm taking the opportunity to tidy up my wiring, soldering etc.

Tried pushing the bells back down the motors last night. No dice. They are on as tight as anything. I did notice though that there is a tiny grub screw, so I will take that out as soon as I can find a hex bit small enough and do it that way. I'll also check for bent shafts at that point too as I suspect that is a more likely culprit bearing in mind what the quad has been through of late :)

More time spent fixing than flying at the moment *sigh*

I did a test flight yesterday with 6030 props on my RCX 1806 motors, seemed to hover about the same 50% mark, maybe a bit quieter but I'm sure it wasn't as reactive going up as the 5040s which seem to be the sweet spot for me. Hoping to get out for some FPV today with them if I can for a full report back.

Cool. I'll look forward to that. Nowhere in the UK has the HQ5040's at the mo that I can find, otherwise I probably would have got those.

The HQ5030s I found a bit underpowered

The Gemfan 5030's were just rubbish. Half of them were mis-shapen when they arrived and they were a lot noisier and wobblier than the HQ's.

Real GemFan props? I've always found them acceptable

The HQs are a whole level up, curios why they seem to generate less thrust though, they seem far stiffer. Cant wait to try the HQ bullnose 5" props when they hit the market, these motors seem like they have more in them. Will be more curiosity than anything, one thing I don't need is less flight time

somewhere in here is my new miniquad....

So, just bought an X4, the H107C.

Just taking the controller out for the first time and I notice the left joystick doesn't spring back up and down, just left and right. The right one springs back to centre as you would expect. Is this normal? Related to keeping the power up I assume?

It's your throttle control which you don't really want springing back to half-throttle...

"angry quadcopter, meet face" :D

e: new antennae arrived today. Needed to get my little stubby one away from the frame. Seems the ticket, put them on the quad and vrx, walked with my goggles to the end of the garden (other side of the house, 2 walls in the way and a floor up) picture still pretty good! Took a punt on these for £5, looks like it was worth it

So I get home from work to day to find a card from the post office tucked in my letter box with a customs charge label on it.

Yay my FPV gear finally made it out of Customs after 4 weeks!

Except the date on the card is for 20/08... What???

The post office only keep customs related parcels for 21 days... and I am now just out side of this by 1 day... and not ******* impressed.

So the missus is going to nip down to the post office tomorrow in the hope that the Post Office haven't sent it back yet other wise I could lose £100+.

Wired up a strobe and some LEDs to the quad for landing orientation. Had a blast FPVing today, 4x 1500 battery flight, around 7-8 minutes. Started slow then pushed more and more flying close to hedges and around trees. Everything seems spot on. Only one prop broken in ground hugging crash :)

Want to use the voltage monitor on the Naze so need to get hold of a buzzer. Also got rid of the fatshark power filter, wired directly to the PDB, no interference here either d_b.

The fatsharks performed really well in low light as the sun was going down fast. Lots of mosquitoes and midges though, boots deet based gel repellent recommended :)

I want to add FPV and lights and now I'm regretting getting a breakout cable. Its really neat and tidy, but it means I have no spare power outlets.

Oh need to try some higher rates for flips. I'm told 1.25 RC rate with .60 RC expo is the way to go - any comments? Shame these rates can't be changed on the go via a switch.

I'm going to try mine without the filter till it arrives from HK, hopefully it will be fine too. I have a buzzer you can have, Pretty sure it works fine.

Still on the no soldering crusade? :p

Not really, decided that's a rather limiting factor. Its juat I've got my ESCs and all power distribution between the bottom 2 plates of the frame, which appeals to my neat and precise streak. The thought of messing it all up to put a PDB in scares me more than learning to solder! Lol.

The FPV kits I've been looking at connect to the balance lead though. But then... how do I connect my lipo alarm?

My sensible side also keeps making me question spending loads of money on something I regularly slam into the ground/tree/rugby posts/scrum machine :).
