Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Good video, braver than me going over the water.

What vtx you using? That's really good going.

I'm using Fatshark 250mw with the Immersion spiro antennas and lucky to get 450m before I get major interference. I think this is might have something to do with my video antenna and the 15cm extension being on top of the radio RX, I need to test it over the weekend.

I'm using fatshark immersion 250mw and spiros also but can get out to around 1.8KM no problem (well it does start to get abit iffy, still usable though)..don't even have a filter, just powered direct from main battery.

You deffo need to separate vtx and radio as much as you can, it will also mess with your radio range.

.....
I read somewhere that Banggood were selling sub par/fake RCX motors. Maybe they've bucked up their ideas...

I have read reports of some dodgy ones but also plenty of good reports so it is likely that they have had a batch of knockoffs at some point.
The DYS BE1806 ones are only a tiny bit more £ and better motors so I don't see any reason to get the the RCX ones anyway.

What tx/rx are you using?

The XT60 connectors are annoying me. They are really tight and I managed to pull a couple of bullet connectors apart while trying to yank the battery off. Had to be 2 I couldn't get to without dismantling the quad too, didn't it :(.

Taranis and X8R... without doubt the most radio you can buy for small money. Can't recommend it enough. It has features that blows away radios many times the price.

Best bits about Taranis are live RSSI (signal strength readings and warnings), and verbal output of functions. It tells me verbally if signal is getting low which is fantastic when FPV.

I'm sure Rilot will back me up on what a amazing radio this is

I'm using the 9X with FRsky DJT and D8R II Plus, I get telemetry in the way of beeps and I get them around the 800m-1km mark. I'm wanting a bit more range :)

I went out today and had a great flight, Excuse the wobbling edges at times as I used Youtube's stablization thing to see what it's like and it's not that bad tbh.

Upgraded my 250 with some pretty lights, as the days will be getting shorter before we know it...

Its just 12v SMD LED tape, wired right to the PDB. Was going to set up a switch be decided to have them on all the time. The current draw is negligible

That's looking cool now with the lights :)

Agreed about orientation. I'm struggling a bit at range to see which end is which! I have some LED strips, might have to install them now. How have you fixed them on?

I'm now running Nanotech 1500mah 35c batteries and performance is much improved. Well, it was. Quad is now oscillating like a muthabiatch on throttle up, so not sure what has caused that.

It only seems to do it at certain points on the throttle too so I suspect that it might be due to a imbalance on one of the motors. I've run the motor test in baseflight on each of them and one or two of them do seem to be generating some odd harmonics. Will have a closer look tonight.

Oh, and I snapped an arm too. balls. Lost orientation at about 150' out and hit the ground hard. Not the first (or even 5th) time this has happened but must have hit at exactly the right angle.

Need to redo leds for mine really. Since rebuilding on the plastic frame I've been lightless. Soon going to hit the point where weekend day times are the only time that can be flown when working normal hours.

Lunchtime flying is the only way in December, tis true. Luckily I have a nice largish field quite close-by in the center of Bath and I've not been kicked off it (yet!)

Hot glue! Need to key the edge of the carbon fibre a little, it don't like stuff sticking to it.

Worth taking the bell off, giving the insides a check and dabbing a bit of thin oil in the bearings imo. They're great motors but everything is made to a price. Are the Nanotechs really helping? I am about to buy a few more packs, I might spring for some of those.

I'm working on a few indoor locations... I know of at least one factory/warehouse which I can get permission to fly in. When I have something more concrete (no pun) I'll post it on the meetings threads on multi-rotor uk forums. I know a few others are pursuing a really good venue in NW London, but these will be weekend meets rather than ad-hoc flying

Similar for me, got a field/park 100m from my house with plenty of room for flying around in providing I keep half an eye on other people in it. I've not had much trouble in the summer, so doubt it will be an issue in the winter!

Hadn't really given flying indoors any serious thought. Imagine I'll just fly less overall and stick to weekends if weather is good.

Any ideas on how the DYS motors come apart? I did have a look the other day and there is what looks like a grub screw or two at the top of the shaft and a circlip at the bottom?

The Nanotechs were an improvement. I seem to be getting longer flight times and a bit more punch..... is it night and day? Not sure really. I seem to be crashing and fixing more than flying at the mo, which is frustrating and makes it difficult to tell. I also switched to Gemfan 5030's from the HQ ones and they are supposed to produce a bit more thrust anyway so again, more difficult to tell.

Oh yeah - tried cleanflight. Flies as brilliantly as baseflight does on the Naze32. The PID autotune is a bit bezerk though. It kind of worked once, then broke everything massively the second time. Going back to baseflight now I think. The only real benefit of cleanflight is more aux channels (up to 8) and the PID autotune (didn't help me).

Next thing to try - 6030 & 5040 props. Got both on order!

Just need to remove the circlip on the base of them, the bell should just slide off, exposing both barings. It's easier said than done, and it might be worth ordering some spares (I believe they are just M2 circlips

I had one of mine off, and was able to put it back on, but I really needed to take it off in the first place...

Interested to see how you get on with 6" props, they will be my next purchase too

Id need a lot more skill before flying indoors. The "flick on self level and jab the throttle" tactic when its going wrong would soon see me wrapping my quad around the rafters :).

It would teach you good throttle control though. Much like Scuba diving over Fire Coral will soon teach you good boyancy control ;)

Yes, if they (6030) fit, they should be grand.

I might spread a large white sheet on floor. Those look exactly like the sort of thing that will ping off and disappear between the floorboards, given half the chance :)

Did the naze turn up btw?

Radioc.co.uk have 5030 props for £1 for a set of four at the moment. They are clear only, but given I can't see my yellow ones at more than 10m away anyway it doesn't matter. Just ordered 10 sets as I'm plowing through them learning to fly.

Top top, the postage goes up in randomly big chunks. The most economic price is to order 5 sets at a time.

It did mate, many thanks! I have only had time to plug it into base flight and all seems well. Oddly, the one from HK hasn't cleared customs yet, probably the longest delivery from HK I've had and its a 10g circuit board and some Velcro straps :/

You naze is going on either my mini tricopter frame or my old FPV250. One way or the other its going to be made to work hard ;)

Has anyone here had any experience with any ultra micro cameras and video transmitters? I see some systems come in under 5g excluding wires... Tempted to put together an FPV franken quad with hubsan 8*20mm brushed motors, hubsan control board and carbon fibre frame... Winter project, methinks
