Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Build Your Own Drone just called me to say that they have my Inspire waiting for me. Sweet! I shall go and get it on Saturday. I'd go tomorrow but I have to go to the smoke for a meeting. Poo :(

Enjoy it Rilot, you lucky boy!

There's some very good reviews and some lovely videos from it.

Im sure there's someone else on here thats got one on order.

For those larger hexacopters (S800/900) and octocopters (S1000) you'd be looking at the Wookong or A2 controller at the least - the Naza M V2 can't deal with 8 props and I'd want something more reliable for carrying thousands of pounds of gear than a Naza on an S800/900 - hence I believe Rilot runs an A2 on his S800 Evo :)

I do indeed use the A2 and it's a great FC. Very solid.
As far as a craft is concerned it all comes down to what you want to carry. If you want to fly a GH4 (and there are very few reasons why you would want to fly anything heavier) then the S900 is your craft. Much cheaper than the S1000.
If you want to fly a 5D then you want an S1000 or another octo of some description.

DJI just announced Zenmuse for the Sony A7 series of full-frame cameras by the way. Not sure on the weight of those though.

You also need to think about gimbals. Are you planning to do stills mainly or video? The Zenmuse gimbals, fantastic though they are can only take a very limited set of lenses. I think they only support 1 lens with the 5D (Russ will confirm). I do mainly stills and wanted something I could use a zoom lens on hence the Zenmuse was no good for me. I ended up taking an off-the-shelf gimbal and modifying it with a servo to control the zoom on a 16-50mm lens. I fly a Nex5 by the way.

Many people will tell you to build your own heavy lifter or to go with something like Carbon Core or Vulcan. I considered these but at the end of the day I want to fly, not mess with ESC timings etc. Because of this, DJI was really the only option before you get in to SkyJibs and mega money.

This is why I'm considering the Inspire. I just don't have time to mess with it at the moment.

Drone Boning is just odd.

Lisapete, is there a benefit to mounting the receiver antennae in that orientation?

Diversity. Or in other words, to spread the signal and get the best/strongest coverage I think, that's what I was always led to believe anyway.

That does indeed help with those types of antennae but if you used circularly polarised ones (like the fatshark types) then you don't need to worry as much about the directionality of the signal as it's broadcast much more uniformly in all directions.

So the banner for our exhibition stand arrived...

It's quite large :D.

Quite... and the army of four Hubsan X4s :p

Theres a couple typos on the about page of your website.

"octocopters cable of carrying "

assume that should be capable?

and

"complete 360° horizontally and 75° vertically movement"

assume should be horizontal and vertical

Sorry just trying to help...

No, you're right, thanks. Amazing how when writing something yourself no number of proof reads help non-spelling errors.

Rule number 1 of document writing, don't proof read you own work, you know what it should say and usually read it as that regardless of what is written ;)

I spend so many hours of my life writing proposals, build docs, review docs and various other things that I've learnt that one the hard way...

There are also a couple of odd wording bits on the crew page you might want to have a look at.

Nice poster there Russ - looks very professional!

Will be interesting to hear what you thought of the event and what kind of reception you got on the day - I'm sure those X4's will be a magnet ;)
