Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

HobbyKing Global Warehouse from Hong Kong. From my previous orders they seem to accurately state the value of the contents.

With my previous order that cane snail mail Royal Mail posted a card through my door detailing the customs charge which I had to pay before they released the parcel to be delivered. I was hoping I'd avoided this with Fedex but it sounds like that sting will arrive in the post later :(.

Ah well, even with another 20% ontop it's still cheaper than anywhere in the UK.

A meet sounds great... with all the current press I suggest a whirlwind day long tour of all the good FPV stuff.

Heathrow Terminal 5 then onto Buck Palace, Mi6 and No.10, maybe then Faslane naval base and a quick stop off at sellafield

Sounds fun.

NT land is a no go by the way. You have to ask permission to fly and the answer will be "no" unless you have PFAW, good reason for the flight, and agree to only fly at an agreed time of day when there are no people around.

ARPAS posted something about NT about to enact a blanket ban or something. Not sure where that went.

We provide NT with IT Services, hosting, virtualisation, managed fw and network services, maybe I could ask for favour from them :p

Don't forget GCHQ, would be good to fly over any military bases in between as well. I'm sure they wouldn't mind

Got our Inspire 1 today! :)

Before you start anything though I would make sure your Taranis is on latast opentx firmware and also your naza is up to date

http://www.open-tx.org/downloads.html

OK so Open TX firmware is reccomeneded to be used over the FrSky firmware? I will look at getting this updated

I will also look at updating the Naza V2 to latest firmware also

With regards to li-po battery, can anyone suggest the best battery brand and rating to go for, looking to get this ordered tomorrow with a IMAX balance charger

The taranis runs on OpenTX anyways. It's just FrSky branded I think.

Battery rating is a function of current draw vs capacity so you really need to find out how many amps each motor draws at 100% throttle for your type of prop. So...

[Max Amps]*[Number of motors]/Capacity[in Amp hours] = 'C' rating required.

so for my mini H quad it would be 10*4/1.5 = 26.6c. I'd then round it up, not down, to the nearest battery capacity.

The capacity battery you choose depends on the weight of the quad without battery and the amount of spare lift you have available, so probs best to get the scales out and find out the thrust levels for the motor/prop combo you have.

The weight of the quad including the battery should be around 50% of total available thrust.

As for brands....

The Turnigy ones are actually ok as are their Nanotechs. Zippy compacts perhaps not so great in my experience. Gensace are fairly well regarded although not easily sourced in the UK.

Cool thanks for the info, I will look at checking the current firmware version and updating it.

Can anyone with the DJI F450 reccomend a battery based on the above? I dont have scales unfortunatly, plus its not all built yet, was hoping to get battery ordered tonight, so it arrives hopefully before sat.

I have a F450, mine is actually pretty heavy now with the gimbal etc on it

I run Zippy 4000mah batteries on mine, I don't recall the C rating. I think they are 25C, they are probably a bit underpowered now really as there are the same batteries I started out with when I just had a KK and cheapo frame

I get around 8 - 10 mins flight time on 10 inch props but I don't really fly it hard like the 250

sounds like you got lucky. I got a text from Fedex when it was on route asking me to pay fee's/also got an email from them as well. So I paid as soon as it entered the UK

I was hoping for more flying time to be honest on a DJI F450 Naza V2 with, with future upgrades to gimbal and go pro on what ever size props are on them from stock I guess

Is there not a higher rating battery

You might want to consider 4S, I also don't think mine is particularly efficient and a higher C rated battery may also help

The batteries are also fairly old and I don't know if they loose some power over time

You can get higher capacity batteries, just browse Hobbyking or the like and see what is available

You've also got the option to run two batteries and effectively get double the capactity

Have you got the DJI E300 tuned propulsion thingy?

I'm not 100%, but I think you have to tell it you have a Taranis Plus (I'm unsure as I have poverty spec Taranis)

Might be worth reading about

Ok, so assuming an all up weight of around 1200g including the battery, a 5000mah, 4s, 25c battery should give you between 13 and 19 minutes of flying time according to xcoptercalc.

25c should be sufficient for your needs.

I'd go Zippy or Nanotech.

I'm just making educated guesses though without a good idea of weight.
