Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Anyone got any opinions on the DX6i?

I picked one up with a receiver for a shade under £90 from a store in west London. Haven't used it yet, it'll be used on a regular plane but I will probably use it for a quad at some point too. Really looking forward to flying something again, the weather's really starting to perk up at last!

I used to have one when I had my nitro plane for a short while a few years ago.,good radio in its time. you can pick them up on eBay for around 50-60. If you were going for a 7,8 or 9 channel though you would have been better going for a taranis for the price, you get a lot for your money

Spectrum are well renound though

I have one paid £70 from ALS hobbies, solid little radio, easy to maintain fix compatible with all the cheap OrangeRx receivers from HK.

Alright lads, I'm ready to take the plunge but wanted to ask for advice on the setup:

Training: Hubsan X4

The Grand FPV Master:
Lumenier QAV250 carbon fiber
Flight Controller - Naze32
Speed Controllers - KISS 18 amp ESC 2-4s v1.1
Motors - Cobra 1960kv
Batteries x 3 - Lumenier 1800mAh 4s 75c Lipo Battery
Blades x 4 - HQProp 6x4.5 CW
Camera mount - QAV250 CF Vibration Damping Camera Plate
Fatshark Dominator
Video Transmitter - Immersion RC 5.8
Antennas - Spiro
Fpv Cam - Lumenier CM-650 Mini 26x26mm
Flat Arm Extender
PIDS - Auto camera tilt

Altogether seems a pretty decent setup for £600!!

What else do I need? I have absolutely nothing so I'll need a remote controller too and do you think it's necessary to get a nice high def camera for recording the flight or can I just buy that if I feel the need later since it would cost so much.

12amp speed controllers would be more than enough,

I would try and get some lighter batteries, my batteries for my 250 are around 127gms to give you an idea although they may be perfectly fine for the job, but the less weight the better.

Motors, not sure what others think, but why not max out on 2300kv motors? emax are brilliant and around £10 each from makeitbuild it.

Naze32 - unless your good at intrecate soldering, pay the extra £5 and get them soldered, dont have to mess around with it then.

Thats a lot of money for a 250, but I guess most of that is going to be made up of your FPV kit, and the frame! I spend £25 on my frame

honesly get the 18a kiss, they are tiny and lots of headroom for the future, im looking to get some to replace my 12a. its the only way you can ever go to 6x4.5 props.

I love my luminier qav250 but if I was going for a frame now I would get the blackout I have broke a subframe already and cracked the new one with ah airline crack, it is still solid but it is a concern for the future.

If you are set on the qav, hobbyrc.co.uk have them in stock in the uk for £115, also buildyourowndrone has them for slightly less too uk stock.

Got a little project on the go so needed a cheap quad that if blown up or anything doesn't matter.

S500 frame kit £33 NEW

4 x 20A Hobbyking ESC
Set of Turnigy Multistar 2212 - 920kv motors
KK2.1 HC flight controller with programmer board
DJI Carbon props self tighten white tip

£50 All new but sold 2nd hand if you get what I mean

£83 total so far.

Can use my 4's. Just need a RX for my Taranis and sorted

Also tempted to order some 4s lipos as a friend is doing a big order with them.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...y_5000mAh_4S_20C_Lipo_Pack_UK_Warehouse_.html

If you do the trick of waiting then it's £22.97 each, might get 6 more £137.85.

Would give me 12 then

Hi guys,

Need a little help.

I received my f450 last week and have now flown in twice. First time I over cooked it and landed hard and broke a prop (carbon, so good for power transfer but quite brittle). Took it out again Saturday morning and had a cracking flight. The way the auto stabilisation from the GPS unit works is amazing, it was windy and the quad just sat there adjusting.

Then I made a mistake. My friend who was with me asked if it was in manual or Auto mode and if it was in auto then I should try manual. Landed, flicked the switch and took off.... and boy did it take off.. It was like the thing had been nitro charged.

It went up about 10ft like a flash, I panicked which made it do a flip!? and landed upside down, another broken prop and some of the LEDs which tell which way is forward and backwards.

Couple of questions,

1. can you get a prop guard for the f450?
2. What are the best carbon props to get?
3. how the HELL does anyone fly this thing in manual.

Thanks

Tony

1: Not that I'm aware of.
2: Do they have to be carbon? The DJI 10" props are good and work well. Never had any issues with them myself.
3: Like a CP heli. Your controls now control the rate of roll in the direction you push the stick rather than the amount of roll if you get my meaning.

As others have mentioned, a cheaper frame will be fine. The ZMR250 carbon version is pretty good and has replaceable arms so if you do break one (unlikely but I have broken 2!) and if you trash other parts of the frame a whole new frame is only £25 or so.

Everything else is fine but you might want to consider aiming for a 3s power system first. Those motors on 4s with 6x4.5 props is about the top end of power for a mini quad and will give you around 3.2-4kg of thrust or a ratio of 5-6:1. It will be fast. Extremely fast. I'm not saying don't do it, cos it will be a blast for sure but it might make the learning curve steeper than necessary!

Forgot to mention, probably just get a cheap pz0420 board camera for the fpv. It's cheap and cause they're stuck at the front, they tend to take the brunt of any impacts!

Need to sell my DX6i as i have the DX8 now.
Been a good transmitter & easish to set up.

Manual mode is challenging at first but so much more rewarding. I struggle with auto now, it is like you are constantly fighting the quad and you just feel restricted all of the time. Well worth the learning curve.

Anyone using a lost model finder like "loc8ter" or a gps?

I have a lost model alarm which has proven very useful but I'm considering getting a loc8ter. I fly in the forest where there are loads of bushes, trees and tall grass etc and think it will probably be useful. Most the time I have a general idea on where it landed so the short range shouldn't be an issue. Also another benefit is they have their own power supply so if my battery detaches or runs low I can still find it.

Are there any better alternatives? Anything that requires a mobile network is useless as majority of the time there's no signal in the forest.

Thanks for posting, pretty much all the features I want. Looking forward to it being delivered today.

Trust me if you want any help.

I fly with OSD so that's recorded to trace back as it display the numbers on screen.

This is what I use on my rockets

I call it, rings 3 times, hangs up and txt's me. Open the link Google Maps and I walk toward X done. Just make sure you fit it on well, ideally some place it won't fall off should it crash and where it will not mess with the radio and gps.

I've flow one under stress, 10G's and 60,000 ft no issues. Had full coms on the way down. Just make sure you charge the battery
