Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Chris, that looks like a nice place to fly. Is it usually busy/quiet? I'm usually through at Edinburgh a few times a month to visit the in-laws, might take a pop along the road past Gullane and check Yellowcraigs out.

It can be busy, usually at the weekends, I found a quiet spot just back from the beach to take off and have a play, once it was higher up I wasn't so bothered!

Need to find some more places locally to fly it really.

Guys....you live in Scotland...You're literally surround by green fields.

I wish!! Not generally as easy as that m8, although I don't get anywhere near enough spare time to fly lately.

Cool. I'm always looking out for new places to fly. Blackness Castle is pretty good, can get some good footage there. And there's the Albyn Shale Oil Works Bing, Broxburn. A guy on a Phantom FB page posted footage of this location recently and it looks pretty unusual but good. He mixed a Phantom with a DJI Osmo to film this.

Blackness Castle sounds like a good shout, I did see the video of the Shale Oil Bing, looks interesting! I have to admit I thought Blackness was within the "no-fly" zone around Edinburgh Airport?

It's within a 'controlled airspace' area, although so is much of Lothian and Fife to be honest:-

The round blue areas on the map indicate Aerodrome Traffic Zones, they surround smaller airports and aerodromes that do not have additional controlled airspace. Other areas of blue identify Controlled Airspace. If you are operating a drone above 7kg you must not fly in these areas without prior permission from the air traffic service provider controlling that airspace. If you are under 7kg, it is still strongly advised to notify the air traffic service provider of your activity.

To be honest, fly responsibly and use common sense and there should be no issues, if you are flying something fairly commonplace like a Phantom, Yuneec, XK380, Cheerson or Inspire 1 etc then you will be below the 7kg figure anyway. If I'm flying at Blackness castle responsibly, observing the Historic Scotland premises guidelines as well as the CAA guidelines then there's no issue whatsoever, even if sat at 200-400ft taking footage. By the same token, despite still technically being within the blue zone, I'm not going to take off from Ratho Station and fly around the surrounding area. ;)

I'm now waiting on someone saying 'But the wee drone which flew into the Casualty helicopter last week was below 7kg?' :D

Morning all,

I've settles on a controller for my first quad (been using a Hubsan X4 for ages now! Feel super comfortable with it and I consider my self more than versed enough in flying it (expert mode).

What I need help on, is the controller...

http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbykin....asp?strSearch=FrSky+2.4GHz+ACCST+TARANIS+X9D

Which one??? Why so many options of the same one.

So far, my build consists of:

Frame: ZMR250 Carbon fibre
Motors: DYS BE1806-2300kv
Props: Carbon Fiber Propeller 5x3 Black (CW/CCW)
ESC's HobbyKing 10A ESC 1A UBEC
Flight controller: AfroFlight Naze32 Rev6
Battery: Turnigy nano-tech 1300mAh 3S 45~90C Lipo Pack

There are so many options as they list for each warehouse and some come with the X8R reciever as well. Doesn't appear to be any in the europe or UK warehouses so I would look elsewhere.

I would consider changing your ESC's too, 10A is a little low tbh.

I keep getting close on a phantom 3 standard or advanced but it's a lot to fork out considering I'm quite a novice flyer only using my syma atm

The phantom is SO easy to fly, even my missus who is terrible at things like this can fly it no bother... it really is SO easy.

GEt the pro and you will love it!

Dont have to limit yourself to those TX either, there are other makes, spektrum, Futaba, JR as well out there.

The Blue circle around Edinburgh airport is Class D controlled airspace. There is no set rules as long as you are under 7Kg, keep it under 400 feet and keep well clear of the Climbout and approach. However it is highly recommended that you phone ATC to let them know you are there. As a controller at EDI I would definitely like to know if there was a drone somewhere in the zone, even to give VFR traffic a heads up.

Anyone in the west mids / shropshire area that wants to go to fpv racing meetings? I attended a trial session on wednesday and there is another meeting coming up soon.

Its good fun and got to see an inspire 1, Awesome piece of kit and a lot bigger than I expected. You will need insurance, I got mine from FPVUK for £15 a year membership.

More info please!

Sorry if this was already mentioned, but have you seen the mini inspire 1 for less than £100? Watch it transform at 1:00

Today I ordered my first quadcopter. FPV with display, altitude hold, decent HD camera with gimbal £85 wltoys q303-a

Was going for Phantom 3Pro, but that might have to wait till I know how to fly those things.

I need them mainly for filming, nothing in particular, just stuff around me.

Yes, there is a reason it is so cheap.

Until you see and understand what the Inspire 1 does you wimt understand the price point :)

Oh and to the above build, defo upgrade the 10a esc's, better to have more than less. And probably would have got 2204s over the 1806s for a 250, it will still be pretty nippy though.

As for transmitter, a standard Flysky fs-i6 will be fine for a while u less you're hell bent on having a bazillion channels

Hi guys,

I'm looking for my first drone, I'm willing to go second hand for a cheaper deal but I'm after one with 4K capabilities if possible. I do have a GoPro 3 if that would a cheaper option. What would you recommend? I'd use it mainly for pics/videos of the scenery around where I live. Thanks
