Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Well since the Mavic is cheaper, smaller, lighter, same camera and video capabilities, same flight time, just 5mph slower, same range (7 miles) I cant see any point anybody would buy the phantom 4. In fact because the camera is mounted in a protective bubble and is forward then in some ways its better as you wont get the props in the videos when flying fast and the camera is more protected from crashes.

The only thing the phantom 4 gives you is the ability to fly in higher winds over the Mavic and a dedicated controller which you can mount an large screen ipad to it.

I'd like to see some proper videos showing movement. Panning etc etc

Many thanks.

I didn't realise what the Mavic was until I saw it. Its the one that folds up iirc.

I've hears the Phantom 4 is better because its sturdier (better for n00bs like me I think). My gf thinks I'm crazy spending the money. I know I would get good regular (certainly weekly) use out of it. I thought the range was only 2km? Or am I getting mixed up with signal?

Already seeing lots of P4's / 3's for sale so I'd go that way for value but as I said the Mavic looks very nice.

My P4 went up in some properly high winds yesterday, I'd say it was angled over at 20+ degree's just to stay still, the camera hanging below gimbled over to keep the picture horizontal. Amazing bit of kit :)

image quality of the Mavic looks like the only thing holding it back, for me. Then again I suppose the argument would be that having slightly softer, noisier footage is better than no footage at all if you dont take your phantom due to size.

Love where they're going with this, but personally will hold back for the next release, in the hope that the lens and sensor can at least match the IQ available from the phantom4/hero4.

I think I want to buy a Mavic. All the press out there says it is $749 without the controller and $999 with but it is $999 without on the DJI USA site and £999 without on the UK site.

Am I just being simple?

Its £999 for the quad with remote. There is a tab "whats in the box" which lists everything you get with it.

I want to go travelling in the next year or two and this is something I would love to take with me.

Thanks just had a look and you are right. looking at the US site its $999 with the controller there so probably worth trying to source one from there

Been holding off getting into drones because of the size and price.

Severely tempted by the DJI Mavic Pro, it has everything I want and would be great for my holidays/sports.
All the reviews and videos I've seen so far suggest it's epic.
Might hold off till around Christmas.

Knowing DJI, it may be wise to hold of buying for now to see what happens. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest a Mavic V2.0 may be forthcoming at some point not too far on the horizon.

In other news, I see that the lunatic we all love, Neistat has been given a Mavic to crash/review. ;)

Gonna wait until I can get it a little cheaper as its going to be getting on for £1250 once you get some accessories to make it more usable. At RRP that is.

Is there a particular racing drone/setup that is obvious to get if just getting started in it? Have loads of experience flying Phantoms but I'm aware this is a different kettle of fish...

What's the view on full size PDB's for racing quads?

I bought a tiny square one which I was going to put in the middle of the ZMR 250 frame, but I'm liking the look of some of the other full size ones, with buzzers and LED's just for neatness in terms of build.

Wasted money or worth it?

If it's a good thing, what's everyones suggestion for the ZMR 250.

I found this: CYTRYNA PDB FOR ZMR250, but can't seem to find anywhere that sells it.

I decided against one when I built my ZMR last year (long gone now). Simple reason being that they just aren't very durable.

The ZMR is a tank (assuming you buy a proper one). Heavy, lots of room for gear, but almost indestructible. Using any of the full sized PDB removes that strength. You save a tiny bit of weight, but the ZMR has about 1 million steel screws in it, so will never be a light weight racer.

I have a pdb then a bottom plate, so it gets strength there.

As said makes things a bit neater in terms of wiring and the like

Cool, thanks guys, think I'll get one.

Should I bother with getting the video transmitter and miniOSD bits now? I won't be getting the camera/goggles for a coupld of months yet.

A friend is looking for recommendations for a first drone for a 7 year old. I got myself a Hubsan X4 a year or so ago which was ok and good value but wondered if there is anything newer which is more stable / easier to fly and possible to fly outdoors for a young beginner?

Thanks

I've got a Hubsan X4 which I'm learning on at the moment, I think it's more than adequate for indoor and outdoor close range flight.

Used a jjrc h11c also. Works outdoors too as long as it's not windy.

Reasonable size mind
