Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

From what I've seen online the Mavic seems similar in the wind if not slightly better due to it's much smaller cross section. Of course the Phantom is more powerful to combat a head wind. You'd probably have to put the Mavic in sport mode to fly directly into a strong head wind, but it should be able to hover just fine.

There are a few videos on youtube of people taking leaf blowers and the like to them.

Pretty sure the phantom's max wind speed is 24 mph and the Mavic is 20 mph. Not a lot in it and both pretty decent results.

Hoping some of the very knowledgeable people in this thread will be able to answer a few questions.

CAA details on the specific point about defining 'valuable consideration' and whether deriving income from a YouTube channel constitutes aerial work:-
Aerial Work is defined within the Air Navigation Order to mean – any purpose, other than commercial air transport or public transport, for which an aircraft is flown if valuable consideration is given or promised for the flight or the purpose of the flight. As is often the case with legal meanings, there is a fair bit of leeway here in terms of the interpretation, but the basic question that needs to be asked is ‘what is the purpose of the (specific) flight?’. Valuable consideration can be more than just a simple exchange of money, it can be anything of value that is given to the pilot or aircraft owner, but it needs to be given in exchange for the flight. Another way to think about it is to ask 'If the money/valuable consideration was not given, would the flight still take place?'
On that basis, we do not regard the posting of videos of private flights on YouTube (or a personal website) as aerial work, whether or not money is ultimately obtained through advertising – it is all about the original purpose of the flight. If however, a company commissioned a specific video from a private UAS operator to use as an advert on YouTube, then the operator would need to obtain permission from us.
The same applies to estate agents and farmers. As they are not getting an income from the actual flight of their UAS, then they do not need a Permission, even though the flight contributes to their commercial activity. In the case of estate agents, however, most will need permission from us to fly in a congested area, or within 50m of a property. If you have any queries please contact [email protected]

Did the point about adsense on YouTube videos ever get clarified? (I tried to look through the whole thread but its massive and mostly about building FPV quads). In the extremely unlikely event I would get enough views to actually receive any money from adsense would that be classed as commercial work?

What about if I take a photo and sometime later someone sees it and wants to buy it? Am I allowed to sell it even though I wasn't licensed for commercial work when I took the photo? (again unlikely but want to be sure)

Final question (at least for now). ">50m away from structures" that means vertically too right? so a low (~10m) pass above a lone structure in a field for example is against the regulations?

Hi guys, after a recommendation for a wifi camera drone for £50 for my Dad for Christmas please. I realise the budget is limited, but it would appear that there are quite a few options out there.

The two that I've seen and shortlisted are the MJX X600 (hexacopter!) and the CoolRC 509W.

Both appear to have onboard cameras (albeit not of the highest quality), both seem like they're easy enough to fly and have gyroscopic stabilisation and stream video to a smart phone.

Any ideas or recommendations are most welcome. After the fun we had with micro helicopters a while back I think this would be an excellent gift for him.

Some absolutely awesome aerial shots in here, I would love to get into aerial photography! I need a GoPro first though!

Thanks,
Tom

Would something like the X5C be good to learn on? Ultimately I'd like to build my own but could do with learning the basics of keeping it in the air first! Since it's only about £36 I don't mind getting it as a temporary training quad. Any other recommendations i should consider? Thank all

Thanks, although I think it may be risky as they only say Paypal non gift so I think they have up to 6 months to try and claim (scam) the money back via PayPal for something that's been delivered to them?
