Spec me a drone

Hey guys,

Looking into getting a drone to take some cool aerial videos etc.

Looking into it, is there anything really worth getting that isn't a DJi Phantom 3 Standard?

Everything else cheaper seems to have a crap camera (no gimbal etc.) or flight times under half of that of the Phantom?

Cheers,

Dan

This do?

I'd wait and get the GoPro Karma whenever that releases.

It was release but it was dropping out of the sky they had to not only recall every single one, gave people full refunds, they also gave people a free Hero 5 as a compensation. God knows why they still intend on re-release it in 2017.

Just get a DJI mavic and be done with it.

Mavic or phantom 4 pro for that 60fps 4k camera loveliness!

Don't really have that sort of cash to drop, the Phantom 3 Standard is a stretch as it is, but I'd rather spend £450 and have something decent, than £250 and have something not even worth having.

"Cool aerial videos etc"...

You'll use it a dozen times, probably illegally, before letting it collect dust.

Probably, thanks for your riveting reply and view into my pshyche though!

Check out the CAAs Dronesafe website and make sure you know the rules of flying!

Get hold of the Drone Assist app so you can see whether you should even attempt flying in certain areas or if it's technically legal to do so.

Already read up on Dronecode etc, thanks though :D

I would be interested to hear more experienced peoples thoughts on this also. Been playing with a small Syma for a few weeks and love it but looking to upgrade to something bigger. Can't justify spending more than about £400.

Took my Mavic out this morning for a first proper few flights and filming. -2 degrees but it operated just fine. I think it'll take a while to learn effective video techniques and also all the capabilities of the aircraft but it is already a huge amount of fun!

I think the next step for you guys who have cut your teeth on stuff like Syma's is either a Phantom 3 Standard or an Advanced. For that price point I personally think the P3 Standard is very hard to beat. Sure, it has its limitations in range and video feed capability but the latest firmware of 1.7.90 is possibly the best yet and if you buy a cheap windsurfer and mod the standard using Papa Tita's MagicPower program then it suddenly becomes a very capable aircraft. At a later date further along the line most folk look at investing in a DBs antenna or an Argtek. The Advanced brings DJI Lightbridge to the party which is a better option than the Standards WiFi but of course you pay more for it. I'd suggest stretching your budget a little and going the P3 route. Even hang fire for a bit and see what prices they appear at in the New Year sales. The P4 Pro and Mavic will at some point, have an innevitable effect on prices of P3's but it may take a while to start filtering through.

I went from a Syma X8C to a P3 Standard and can't fault it. Again, for the cash, the tech packed into them by DJI is quite startling.

Bonus points for the tune :)
