Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Very common. Most flying clubs are extremely snotty.

You only have to look at the photos on some of the club sites to know you're not going to be welcome in their little clique. Maybe when I'm old enough to wee myself and develop a taste for Werther's original, I'll be in with a chance. ;)

By the way, how did you get your video switcher working on your P2? I think I'm going to want one but that doesn't seem doable with the standard remote. What are you using?

I use a FrSky Taranis radio with an X8R receiver. It's not possible with the stock radio.

Slowly ordering the bits to make mine, but I have some questions if somebody wouldn't mind helping out with.

I have ordered an APM 2.6 which I'm still waiting to arrive, is it safe to assume anything that's listed as compatible with 2.5 is also compatible with 2.6?

Looking at the MinimOSD is there any difference in the purple ones? They seem more expensive but I can't see any difference, other than the colour. Are they all the same or are there good and bad makes?
FPV transmitters/receivers, is there a particular make anybody can recommend? Would like something that has a decent range, but the choice is bewildering. If I buy the Skyzone FPV goggles, which are the ones I think I will get, would I need to buy a receiver? Or would it be better to buy one anyway? Do you get a battery with the goggles or is that extra? If not what battery would I need?

Sorry for so many questions. Any advice would be appreciated.

The 2.5 and 2.6 are almost exactly the same, the only difference is the 2.6 uses an external compass, so everything that can be used on one can be used on the other.

The purple minimOSD is made by 3DR and pretty much the reference design, copies are variable quality, I got a copy from hobby king and something in it is squiffy as it freezes when I arm sometimes and some firmwares don't work at all so I've got a different one from eBay on the way.
Whatever you get just make sure you get a v1.1 as they fixed the overheating that burns out the regulator and kills the OSD chip.

For video gear I like to use ImmersionRC, they are good, I like them :)

The Skyzone goggles have a multi-band receiver I think so can recieve from any of the popular transmitters. You don't need another reciever.
Here's Bruce's view on them

Also a video on 5G8 frequencies - http://youtu.be/j6LuEhuU-l8

Can't answer the battery question, Bruce probably covers it in his videos though, it's been a while since I watched them.

I would recommend you get some skew antennas as they reduce multipath interference you often get with linear antennas. I've bought mine from a guy called Gav - http://www.multi-rotor.co.uk/index.php?topic=3871.0
I only use his antennas and I've even got a good image from a plane flying FPV 4-5km away with them which is really good for 5.8. He's also a sound guy, I've met him at a meet.

Thanks for your help, some good info there. I'm sure I'll have some more questions shortly, there seems a lot to learn about this hobby. Starting to think maybe I should have bought a RTF for the first one, but building things is always more enjoyable for me.

Ive got a set of antenna from Gav too, they are so much better than the standard ones that come with the transmitter.

Going to order another set soon.

Cool :) I'm going to have to get some more for my mini quad too.

I decided to go with the DRQ250 you mentioned. Did yours take long to arrive, the guy who makes them is in Turkey right?

That frame looks pretty similar to the basic 330 frame they do, it's a nice starter frame but if you hit the floor hard in it you'll break and arm (at the point between the arm and the motor mount)
Surprised they haven't changed the design at that point, but on the other hand, it's less than a tenner so you can't complain much!

Seen that on the other forum,i think its all one piece the arms arent seperate, one broken arm and its time for the bin, great for the price though.

You could easily just get some 3mm plywood and some 12mm x 12mm wood and build something better and cheaper.

Ok cheers guys. Shall wait till pay day next month and get something a bit more unbreakable :)

Possibly, the delivery was only $10 when I ordered mine.If you were thinking of ordering together, I would have been up for that but it probably wouldn't have been much of a saving, $10 is what £6? it would almost cost that to post it on in the UK. :(
Ah ok no worries :)

Designed it in libre cad, printed onto some cardboard then taped it to the plywood and used a
dremel to cut the shape out.

Tried libre cad this morning. No idea where to start! lol. Will need to poke around a bit more at the weekend. Firstly I'm just going to fire up some other 3d software just to make a rough shape to play about with to get an idea of how I want to lay things out. I need to stop being indecisive over what to make and just build something :/

I've built, flew and trashed a few tricopters and quads. I always go back to wooden booms. They are tough, light and absorb lots of vibration vs metal, plastics or carbon fibre etc. Plus they are dirt cheap, easy to cut and drill and available to buy in hardware/DIY shops.

Managed to get my P2 out for a while yesterday evening. I'm thinking about a gimbal and camera now. Going to do some digging to see if anyone's made a decent gimbal for the Mobius. Don't fancy spending the dosh on a GoPro!

I quite liked Rilot's cabling setup as well, I think I'm going to re-do mine.

Oh god, don't follow my cabling. It's a mess.
I'm going to tidy it up this weekend by removing the case from the iOSD, taking an internal tap from the board for the CAN port and mounting it all inside the shell.

You're quite right, my Tri has taken a few knocks (nothing major yet) but it's holding up well.

Guys, is it possible to add an OSD to the Fatshark Predator V2 system that doesn't cost £100+? I see the ezOSD is compatible but thats £100 odd.
