Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I've made a few changes including swapping the FrSky X8R for a FrSky D4R-II so less weight, CPPM and better telemetry. Added a telemetry battery voltage sensor so my 9XR Tx alarms when battery is low, changed the 10a turnigy ESC's to 12a Emax SimonK. Also put the ESC's back inside the frame and moved the PDB under the Naze 32.

Shaved off 35g and much more locked in with the SimonK ESC's.

I had to get it all from 2 different shops, hobby king and HobbyRC. Hobby king are coming from the international warehouse so I have no idea how long that will take though I'm in no hurry to be honest.

One thing i did not order is a lipo charger, can any one suggest a decent one to charge the 1300 3S turnigy nano-tech, I ordered 4 which I hope should be plenty.

As above Accucel 6.

Also I have ordered a fair bit from the HK international warehouse and every time I have been stung with customs. I won't do it any more, always works out more expensive than if I just paid extra and got parts from other sellers in the UK providing they have stock. I always try to get everything from Makeitbuildit as far as building a 250 goes they pretty much have everything you could need and the Phil who runs it is very helpful.

Here's a reasonable build for a kick off:

DJI F450 kit - £131 (includes frame, motors and ESCs) or F550 kit (£232) if you fancy a hex rather than a quad
Turnigy Nano-tech 5000mAh 4S lipo
FrSky Taranis transmitter - £180 (includes X8R receiver)
DJI Naza-M V2 - £191 (get this rather than the Lite as you can't add items such as the iOSD or Zenmuse with the Lite)
Decent, cheap LiPo charger

You can get the Naza-M V2 with the F450 and F550 as a package if you want to save some money.

Just going back to this again (sorry) what are most peoples choice here? hex or quad? Im looking to buy either the F450 or the F550 as a start, but problem is cost! I dont want to spend too much, the extra £100 for hex is quite a lot!

If I buy it as a quad, can it be later upgraded to a hex by adding bits?

Im just searching to see if I can get F550 kit any cheaper than £232

i use this one. think most people do.

just wondering if you would have been quicker and cheaper ordering a kit like this.

Much cheeper, i went MAD, never drink and spend when deprived of sleep:( wonder if my better half will believe that tale?

Should have realised about the customs, think the hobby king portion came in around £130 so god know what the charges on that will be. Damn you inebriation!

Yeh seeing a lot of people either choosing the 450, or dowgrading from the 550 to 450, as it tends to be more fun to fly, costs less, some saying the 550 is more stable and has more power, but to be honest looking at videos people have taken on the 450 looks ok to me. If you need more power cant you just select different motors?

With the Nasa M lite vs Naza M V 2 - whats the real big difference here?

The cost is adding up to a bit much

I wouldnt use the iOS side of it but stability and hold etc yes

Damn shouldn't be thinking of spending this money, would be a lot easier if I could fast forward to end of jan so I get my pay with lots of overtime and the bonus I should be getting

Even if I buy the 450 kit with naza m now there are still other things I would need to add, maybe i should wait until end of jan

Am tempted by one of these as a ready to fly FPV setup - all I'd need is a receiver to go on the quad and a couple of 2200mAh (or more) batteries and I'd be set.

Quanum Venture FPV Deluxe Quad

I think the F550 is better used for the nicer footage the H3-3D with Hero 4 gives me rather than FPV so having a nicer nippy quad for fpv fun seems the way forward!

First time I've been able to film a flight with this, I bodged my GoPro onto the frame and went for a flight

It was probably a bit front heavy despite hanging the battery as far back as I could to counter balance the camera. I kept the GoPro in its "crash" casing just in case which added quite a lot of weight. Made a huge difference to the amount of throttle required unsurprisingly

Still getting used to it but starting to feel much more confident now and I'm still flying on stock settings on the KK which seems to get a bit confused on hard turns. I don't know if it is my flying or the board not able to keep up

Video is here, sorry about the blurryness, forget to clean the lens after mountain biking last weekend!

I had to fix a couple of things today

1. One of the motors stopped working on my Syma X4, I stripped it down and found the wire where it enters the motor had snapped! Luckily I could get some solder on it and soldered the wire back on, so that's all sorted
2. I nearly broke the wires on my micro losi adapter cable since it's hard to grip both connectors when undoing them on the charger, so I designed/3D printer a small holder:
The micro losi connector fits inside the lower half: (this is the prototype to check the strain relief and connector fitment)

Then a snap on cover on top: (With redesigned lower)

That makes it much easier to plug/un-plug the batteries!

Nice! Don't forget you'll need radio gear, batteries and chargers if you don't have them already

Yep I know, they will be purchased at the end of the month now

:)

Imax balance charget I think I had for my old kit a few years ago did the job so will buy one of those, and un-decided on radio gear, but will look about after the info from this thread :)
