Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Hope you're all out getting some flying in today? Tis lovely weather. Just managed to squeeze a sneaky 5 packs in during my luchtime :)

Just had a 7-8 min session with the 250.

Started in angle mode

Then switched mode and managed to get some flips in. Some controlled, some with a few small minor crashes resulting in broken props. But alll good.

Not fully worked out the best way to pull off a flip yet but so far..

Gain some altitude, then cut throttle to low, pull back or forward on elevator to initiate the flip. Once complete throttle back on to gain stability

I think you should lower the throttle as you roll so its at it's lowest when your inverted, and then throttle back up as you come back to right side up.

Sounds about right to what im doing, although I maybe lowering the throttle a tad too much, but can still come out of the other side of it, although need to practise more I think on that.

Cosimo - That guy sounds like an idiot and giving everyone else a bad name

Had chance at lunchtime to get. Flew it with the new 4s 5000mAh Zippy, got about 11 mins before the low battery kicked alarm kicked in.
Got new landing gear & all being well, a gimbal to fit on Friday. Then to sort out some FPV stuff.

What model have you got? (and landing gear)?

I think I've finally figured out why I have been struggling with flips on the naze32/cleanflight. Took some receiver monitoring in the end and had to do with my travel adjust settings on my controller.

Basically the stick ranges where not reaching min (under 1000) and max (2000 and over). the Naze32 ignores anything under 1000 and over 2000 but it must reach these ranges to flip in horizon mode.

What I didn't realise was the travel adjust setting on the radio works as you move the stick to the extremities. E.g. move the roll stick to the right, adjust the travel % to go over 2000 (2020 in my case), then you need to repeat the process with the stick full to the left, change the same travel adjust and get the reading just under 1000.

This is for a Orange T-six and on the DX6i...

Hopefully next flight I'll be rocking some rolls FPV :)

took mine out for a quick tuning flight and having some trouble ironing out some little niggles. If I do a fast flip ( flip at speed so forward flight remains fluid) I have to throttle hard out of the flip to accommodate a bad exit angle to the flip, if I try to adjust the pitch at all to maintain my flight angle the quad will pitch up the nose violently. also getting some drift to the left when I do punch outs.

Good news is I lost a lipo last night in the dying light as it evacuated my quad at speed, I then found it tonight :D

The landing gear is the generic 550 raised legs with gimbal Mount that can move back and forth on a couple of rails. Offset the imbalance by hanging battery out the back.
Gimbal is one that works with the Naza lite.
Did think about retracts but only 1 channel left on the receiver.

I'm thinking of getting a Quadcopter. Looking at the Sky Hero Spyder. Like the frame and the fact it has the room to add parts and a shell. Also hiding the cables so it doesn't look like a unmanaged switch cabinet!

Any thoughts on the frame?

White raised legs? or skid type legs? iv still got landing skids to attach to my 450, not got round to it yet

Recieved 10 x 25mm M3 nylon standoffs today to use as landing legs for my 250 quad, think 25mm should be enough to raise it off the ground a little, their the same size as the lumenier landing legs.

Going to do a quick black paint dip and screw them on to my Diatone arms

Not an expert, but the theory is that the a roll flip should be happening with a neutral mavity pull, e.g. the just before the flip, you throttle up so that as you roll, the quad is flying up or straight with with no prop thrust, moving on inertia only.

The flip then just becomes a matter of initiating the corkscrew motion, and the throttle should be low when quad is upside down so that the props aren't making you loose altitude.

When whatching the likes of Charpu doing this (the latest flitetest vid with a view of his controller is really good) it all happens so fast that it just seems like getting the sequence on the controls timed just right. I'm pretty sure that his quad is dialled in a way to ensure all this happens really quick too.

I have been playing with the Phoenix 5 sim, there is a DJI Phantom model that is interesting to try and flip, given its a much heavier, less agile machine, you can really see how the forces are at play for a quick flip with little altitude loss. You need to punch the trottle, then drop it and fllip it at the top of the arc, just before it starts falling again (effectively weighless at the top of the throw).

Yep, they be the ones.

Same one as me, I guess you found they didnt have holes ready for the DJI mounting plates? did you have to buy the nuts/bolts from like a DIY store and use the long mounting holes on the bottom of the DJI plate if you get what I mean?

I thought there would be mounting holes ready for it to mount to DJI plates

Also, does your 550 sit bang on in the middle of the landing skids?

Been warned they can be a bit of a pig to fit. Hopefully I'll get time to fit em tomorrow or weekend. Being ill hadn't helped
