MX-5 Project log thread

Soooo tempted to get an MX-5 and turbo it. Could be a much cheaper (and just as fun) alternative to some of the other cars I've been looking at.

There's a yellow turbo up for £2500 on pistonheads at the moment. Ok some of the interior and decals are of questionable taste but even so...

Howard, after our little MSN conversation earlier, I took a screwdriver to the downpipe heatsheild and couldnt really figure out which bit to bend, so I just poked it about and bent it at the highest point.

It didnt make any difference though, im probably not doing it right, if I bring a screwdriver to the mini meet will you show me where? :D

Anywho, I recorded a longer video clip after the silenced decat is fitted, this time im actually driving and giving it some.

Im not spamming your thread on purpose, just maybe this information will be useful to other owners :p

Yeah, had a look through Pistonheads earlier, there's a couple on there but both are a bit suspect to be honest. I'm probably gonna go for a eunos 1995 (the one with the LSD) and see what can be done with that, unfortunately there'll be a bit of summer-tax on the cars at the mo so I might wait until September/October and see what I can pick up then.

Having seen a few MX-5 turbo vids on YouTube, gotta say I'm awfully tempted!!

Managed to get rid of my clonking noise from the rear suspension today!!:D

I fitted poly bushes to the rear anti roll bar (2 clamps and 4 at the droplinks).

The job was suprisingly easy, good access and pressing out the old knackered bushes was easy peasy using a vice.

Im not one to exaggerate stuff but this really has made a lot of difference to how the rear of the car behaves, it no longer crashes over bumps and is a much nicer ride.

I would say this is worth doing for all the older MX5's as it is easy and makes a difference. It was obvious mine was on its original bushes which had disintegrated and hardened.

Will be doing the front when I find time :)

What have you done so far then Howard?

Got my 5 a month ago and aside from a bloody good service i have done the following;

Front/Rear Brace bars
Upper/Lower Gearbox rubbers and nylon cup
Fitted OEM momo wheel
Front Grill

To do -

New hood (Next week)
Getting N/S wing resprayed (being done as we speak)
Have some Front/Rear ARB poly bushes to fit (£25 from nutz - should be £85 - 4 clamps & 8 drop links)

In the near future

15" Alloys
New shocks
Underseal

I payed £85 for mine :( is this a group buy?

They made a big difference to my car by the way.

No i bought them off a guy on the nutz forum as he got them from 949 racing and never fitted them before he sold his car, just luck really.

How long did it take you to fit all the bushes or did you just fit the rears? I wanted to do it and for £25 i couldn't say no.

Hey Howard,

I can't believe I missed this thread all this time. What made you go with the P5 suspension? I think I'm going Gaz Gold Pro soon. I really couldn't be doing with waiting all that time for Phil to get his finger out!!
