My GeIL 2GB PC2-6400 CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (MY-058-GL) Overclocking Experience.......

I am trying to run this memory on a AM2 system (yeah I missed the coroe boat!!). Anyhow its an ASUS M2N32SLI board and I am having the following troubles.....

(1) Voltage set 2.0-2.25 seem to enable me to POST. But the BIOS auto selects 667. Does seem to be a prob with this mobo(very picky on RAM) ..[btw ... I bought this RAM on Gibbo's say so when I asked generally would it work on a m2n32sli board.....]

Since have set BIOS to 4-4-4-12-T2 (T1 crashes the system) at DDR2-800

(2) Under these settings decided to run memtest and I get a reported bandwidth of 2800MB/s approx. Seems too slow to me as I was expecting 5000-6000... I assume PC6400 ram means theoretical performance of 6400MB/s or so????

If this memory bandwidth is supposed to be much higher for DDR2 800 ram then why is mine low??? and showing no memtest errors and working seemingly ok in windows apart from the lousy memory bandwidth. Ran MemTach got a max. reported bandwidth of 3500MB/s. CPU-Z does not recognise my RAM along with everest (2.20 free version).

The clock skew rate for both chips is 300ps (auto setting). Also I have left the "Advanced Timing Options" settings all on AUTO as that sub menu has 20 or so settings.

I assume that SPD for this mem is not being recognised by my mobo (hence no CPU-z readings etc). This SPD data I assume is all the advanced timing settings I was on about????? And a possible thing to explain my woes is the AUTO settings in this advanced timings menu being set all over the place by the BIOS???? Does anyone have a "full set" of these advanced timing values for this Geil memory???

Okay gone way to technical I guess???

Thanks for the reply.....so what am I to do ? Do I really have to wait/hope for ASUS to release a suitable BIOS ? A little disappointing...... :(
Have you set the ram voltage to 2.1v?

A lot of us are getting 800Mhz+ with the P5W no problem, and (as Gibbo pointed out) it's unlikely that the kits would vary that much within a batch.

What's the highest Mhz you can post at, using 4, 4, 4, 12 ?

My 2x1Gb Geil 6400 are memtest stable at 830Mhz, 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v (333fsb 4:5)

Yeah, I have them @ 2.1v.....tbh, even when I reset CMOS to defaults and turned off all the auto stuff, set RAM to 800MHz and tried setting timings manually to 4-4-4-12 - it still wouldn't POST even ! This is what I am finding frustrating.....

Geil with MSI 865P Neo

I am also having problems with this memory. Cant get it to run at 800mhz even at 2.2V and 5-5-5-12 timings. Motherboard on auto runs it at 533mhz. Any suggestions ???

I seem to have a faulty set on my hands as well.

Using an Asus P5B Deluxe, i can run the small-FFT prime95 tests on my E6400 all the way up to 3.2GHz (400FSB) with ease, but it cant even do a blended test at stock speed, using any memory ratio (ie for 533,667, or 800MHz operation) and any timings. 3-30sec max is all it lasts before giving an error.

They do boot at up to 800 4-4-4 @ 2.1v as intended and i havent tried higher as for the moment, so that isnt my problem, the issue here seems to be a bad section of memory chip. Having just run memtest86 and memtest86+ they have both found errors, including some multiple count errors in exactly the same place, 1640.3MB, identicle right down to the memory address.

I actually bought 2 sets as im building 2 comps, so i guess i will test the dimms 1 at a time to see which ones work and which ones dont...perhaps i can at least get 1 working set whilst the other is being RMAd...i hope so, been wiating ages for this:(

Can any1 at least tell me what their memory MB/s readings are in memtest for this 6400 memory at stock DDR2 800 speed. It will give me some idea of my problem. (I get around 2800MB/s sounds low to me.

I get about the same...i wouldnt worry about it, the high bandwidth numbers you see in sandra etc are usually some sort of buffered SIMD based test. @OLD school' bandwidth tests were always much slower. Thats probably all thats going on here.

I can report though that 1 of the dimms was indeed reporting errors (at half of the total location previously reported with both dimms) while the other dimm was not. Both testsed in the same dimm slot. Pretty conclusive that 1 dimm was bad...going to test my other dimms now to see that they are ok before i resume non-memtest activities:p

Wonderful, truly wonderful..thus far it wont even post with the other set. Can i have gotten 2 duff sets at once ??

EDIT: Boots with 1 of the dimms, not with other...memtesting the one that boots now. And here i thought with enough hardware for 2 comps i had enough redundancy to cover this kinda thing  ;)

So far soo good on memtesting this dimm...meaning i have 2 working dimms form 2 different sets....unfortunately ive just noticed they are labeled with a serial number that matches their set so i will not be able to mix and match which dimms make a set. If the other dimm from the 2nd set isnt going to work, ill have to return BOTH sets... :o  Seems like it may not be a good day afterall.

Hi folks,

Just ran SiSoft Sandra memory bandwidth benchmark and came out with 8200MB/s .... RESULT!!! Comparison system was a nvidia FX-62 running PC2-1066 memory which gives a result of 10200 or so. So now I am happy with my Geil memory though some programs seem to have trouble identifying the memory. Due to SPD read problems due to Mobo and BIOS I guess. Maybe program/bios updates will fix this. Anyhow SiSoft Sandra seems to recognise most of my memory settings etc.

So I am running 4-4-4-12-2T at 210MHz FSB (DDR2840) and 2.1V. All is stable ... memtest 3hrs no problem, windows stable so far .. I'll leave on overnight and run Prime95 tests tomorrow.

Has anyone played around with the Skew Rate settings??? Does lowering/increasing it improve things???

Anyhow I am relieved now seems to be working fine on my m2n32SLI board at last. People have had such trouble with this board.

So the memory is ready for some overclocking at last!!! Any suggestions with this Geil. I don't want to be too aggressive as it is a real pain clearing the CMOS (jumper) as I need to take out my graphics card to get at the jumper each time the system hangs.

Most pleased

Got mine yesterday, very pleased with them as was having trouble with some OCZ. Couldn't get my CPU past 2.6 with them, got that and then some without too much fiddling.

I've just been testing my 2x1Gb kit, and got them up to 886Mhz 4,4,4,12 @ 2.1v :D That's a lot more than I'd hoped for.

I'll try pushing them with SPD timings some time, I reckon they'll do 950Mhz+ :)

EDIT\
Just tried the Everest memory read test, and tight timings seem to make a big difference.

The Gigabyte and Asus boards seems like absolute nightmares with memory. We've had loads of complaints regarding G.Skill and Gigabyte boards not working yet some people have no issues.

It seems that the different BIOS's and batches of the Asus/Gigabyte motherboards really are making quite huge difference to clocking levels and how stable things work.

Do you suggest I upgrade my BIOS, as I have not had a chance to do that since my Windows installation... the only thing of concern is that, every time I do a BIOS upgrade my computer crashes or never returns to it's normal state.

Btw, I have not tried to push the voltage of the RAM up through the Gigabyte overclocking utility yet, I guess that's something to look forward to when I get home.

Also, thanks for getting my Geil RAM to me...most appreciated m8ty! :p

Did you manage to get yours sorted?

I had 3 dead sets on the trot, in the end I posted them back to Geil who confirmed they were DOA they sent a working set to me, I don't feel I had a good experience as it's taken 6 weeks to get a set of working ram and has cost me well over £240, taking into account over 290 miles back and forth to OcUK and the postage to Taiwan.

Then they are an OK set no more no less no where near as good as Gibbo's test set, I'm sticking with Corsair from now on if I'd had this much trouble with Corsair they would og upgraded it for me where as Geil had the nerve to ask is the ram faulty or does it it just not overclock very well!! Then initially they came back to me after a week saying the ram was OK it passed their burn in test, I asked them to run test 5 of memtest for 1/2 an hour they then agreed it was faulty, no wonder there are so many duff sets they are not testing them properly, it ran for 24 hours on their burn in but failed memtest in under 30 minutes says something doesn't it?

I suppose you could say i got it sorted - i now have 2 sets of corsair that does exactly what it says on the, er, plastic.

The first set was definately bad, consistent memtest errors and near instant prime95 blend failure. Sent those back, bought some corsair 4-4-4 and got that working fine, and 2 weeks and a few phonecalls/webnotes later i finally got a refund.

The 2nd set i got working, but i wasnt running then at full speed....once i got round to OCing some more and getting the mem speed up, sure enough they wouldnt boot at 800 4-4-4 (the 1st set did, it just had memtests errors on 1 of the dimms). I RMAd them for refund also and bought some corsair 5-5-5 (due to price hikes i simply couldnt afford another set of 4-4-4 as they were now 90quid mroe than i paid for the geil, the previous set was only 40 more). Long story short, a week alter i got a shipment email from ocuk and thought, damn theyve replaced them isntead of refunding..oh well ill sell them myself for profit. Then i looked at my bank balance and noticed that £18 had been locked from my available balance. Straight away i knew they were returning it as not faulty, but it took a phonecall to ocuk to confirm that as they never actually state ANYWHERE that they are doing that. Phonecall confirmed it. I recieved the same set back, complete with invoice for £0.00 (nice, they dont even make official note of charging me another £18, just as well im not buying for a business or need proper accounting records etc...).

I decided my only recourse was to sell them with a full account of what had happened. I paid 130 and they were then doing 200, so i sold for 160 to cover my purcahse and RMA costs. I did that, and they failed to work for the buyer either, so i arranged a 2nd RMA with ocuk for replacement, sent them off, they were replaced the day ocuk received them (a saturday no less) and now that theyve been returned to me (and checked, worked fine for me), ive sent them on to the buyer and again he has them working fine.

SO, in the end its all sorted, cost me about a fiver and a months downtime/hassle in the end, but i dont have any geil anymore and i wont have any in future heh. I also wont personally be or recommending anyone else i know buy anything from ocuk any time soon.

Its not the first time ive had screwed up RMAs with ocuk but it will be the last.

Gosh, yours experience is as bad as mine, I also don't buy from either now, I can't afford to, I build PC's for about half of my living and when this sort of thing happens my customers come first meaning I'm well out of pocket luckily the ram was mine otherwise I would have had to buy a replacement.

To be honest I really don't know how Geil get away with it, it must be a nightmare for OcUK just imagine the hassel it causes them.

ive got the 2x512mb set of this, but what +v have i gotta add on to get it to the PC2-6400 as mine come up as 5300.
I know you have to up it, but to what.
Its currently on +0.3v on a DS4, but still showing 5300.
