Very nice project mate, MK2s are great to drive with just mild tuning and you've got a cracker there.
Standard looks too, top man!

They look Yummiy. I never actually know that there were 2 springs on the strut. A smaller compact one and a larger out sprung one :p

Sometimes you get one spring with a tighter wind at the top much to the same affect. This is so the suspension is progressive, the tighter coils ccompress more easily than the wide coils, so small bumps are absorbed whilst the stiff spring is holding the wheel on the ground and taking any major body roll forces (thats how i've understood it anyhow- if im wrong tell me:p)

How much did the suspension set you back? Coilovers right?

What brake setup do you have on the front? Standard?

Suspension was expensive!

Front brake set up uses Mk2 16V GTI calipers, 280mm Golf Rallye disks and some Mintex fast road pads. They work really well.

What's it like at putting the power down with the diff? Is it progressive or does the turbo come in and the wheels struggle like crazy?

Power comes in very progressively, it doesnt feel like there's a turbo on it in low boost it's just smooth and very tractable. The diff is amazing, you feel one front wheel start to lose grip and it just sorts it out and pulls you out of the corner.

Are you not going to get the premature detonation if you go back to higher boost? And doesnt premature detonation eat your piston/cylinder heads?

Yes and yes. It needs to be remapped for high boost then all will be fine.

I thought it was fine without the diff, but then I like wheelspin

No comment :p

What pressure does it run at the two different boost settings?

12 PSI in Low and 20 PSI in High

On my coilovers, the smaller spring is called a "helper" spring, it is there to ensure that the main spring stays in place when the suspension reaches full droop (ie when airborne). If the helper spring was missing the main spring would just rattle about when the damper is fully extended. When the car is on the floor the helper spring is totally compressed and has no effect on the main spring.

Ring update to follow once I transfer some pics from my laptop.

The 'Ring report:

We left Friday afternoon, Golf being filled with luggage. Please note the Clio Trophy that Gareth left at home and regretted all weekend!

Arrived at the ring late Saturday afternoon, went straight to a spectating point as the track wasnt open to the public until 17:00. Saw this in the car park:

Ouch!

Once the track opened we went out for a planned "steady" lap. No idea what happened here but I went a bit silly and managed to scare everyone in the car including myself! It was Bob's first visit to the ring and as usual told me like it is "Llyr you were driving like an idiot, slow down and build it up or the car isnt going to arrive home!" Looking back probably the best advice given all weekend.

Went to PistenKlause for food that night and to celebrate Bob's birthday!

The track was open all day on the Sunday and it was really busy, lots of people were crashing and the track closed 4 times during the day. For the last hour the track was closed to bikes due to the conditions. We met up with dsb and his wife who showed us around. I took dsb out for a lap in the golf and as we were coming in asked if he would like another! The second lap was muck quicker than the first and felt good.

Waiting to go out with dsb:

The new suspension and diff has made such a difference to the car, it feels brillaint to drive now. It's planted at high speeds and the diff just drags the front end round corners. It's amazing how much traction it generates.

By the end of Sunday I think we had used 14 laps out of our 25 lap ticket. Gareth did 4 in a row around Sunday tea time while myself and dsb went to Adenau bridge to take some photos. Dave took some decent shots which wer e posted in a previous post.

Food at the hotel that night and a few beers

Monday morning was a lie in as the track wasnt open until 1. Did a few steady laps in the afternoon and tehn it started to rain! I have never had so much fun in a car. The track was empty and we were flying! The diff was generating so much traction in the wet. We did about 6 laps one after the other in the rain and it was brilliant. We basically had the track to ourselves. It was a very good way of learning the track!

Started back home 09:00 Tuesday and got home about 23:30 which wasnt fun!

So the Golf survived 1600 miles including 25 laps of the Ring and I'm never ever going to sell it! :D

Thats the spirit !! :D

Glad its coming together at last. All thats left is this High boost thing isn't it?.....oh and the OTHER project ;)

It feels together now :D I'm going to adjust the suspension to make it a little softer for the road and fit a higher rated fuel pump for safety and then get it mapped for high boost.

Other project will restart the weekend! ;)

Nice updates, mine is still being done but I have somehwere nice to work now.

Getting there, have made my new pedal box now and got new brake lines made up. Once thats done the engine can go back in with a rebuilt 02J gearbox and new shift cables.

Little update on this one:

Golf was remapped on Saturday, a little bit of timing was pulled where it was detting and the boost control was tightened up as it was overshooting at high revs.

Using high boost is interesting to say the least, wheelspin on demand up to 3rd! God knows what it would be like without the diff. Suprised a few things on the way home. The way it pulls is silly, it feels quicker than my old scooby :D

I dont think it will make more power than I did at the last RR day but at least I can use it safely now!

Well now that high boost is sorted we can stamp this project....

FINISHED

Time for the thanks to part:

Bob - Best assistant ever, didn't complain once about being shouted at and bossed about, came up with lots of sensible solutions when my head was scrambled! Couldnt have done it without you mate :)

Leon - For all those MSN chats and general support and opinions after test drives!

Tony - For all the parts and support, It's all your fault I started

Tony P - For all the spanner skills

Gareth - Your tea making skills are superb ;)

Mum and Dad - For letting me use their garage and keeping us all fed!

Elfyn - For running about sorting parts out and the last minute prep work

Gavin, Lisa, Oly, Sam and Mark J for doing things I couldn't.

Everyone on OcUK - Seriously guys without all of your posts I would have given up at one point. When that first engine went I nearly gave up, all your posts made me get out and carry on. Group hug!

Thanks everyone we created an animal :D

I hate Golfs. I hate old cars even more. And I hate stupid 4 cylinder engines.

But the fact I absolutely LOVE your Golf speaks volumes. What a project. What a guy! :D

absolute legend !

don't know how i'd managed to not see this thread before now, but yeah this car is rapid thanks for the passenger ride in it L1J, looked like a handful to drive, good job i'm not a nervous passenger because for 90% of the time all that was going through my head was 'this is fast, way too fast to be driving in a mk2 golf '.
So yeah very very cool car, lots of respect for building it!

The only FWD I've been in that felt anything remotely like that Golf was a 250ish bhp RS Turbo van.

Is it less hard work to drive on smooth roads? I've only ever driven it on that road by the pub which is far from a decent surface!

It's not bad at all on smooth roads, bumpy ones need some concentration. It will be sorted soon, I have some plans! ;)
